Dear Rabbit Foot Bill

Right after we met, I should have told you this: there's this February that I have kept from everyone. That The Brutal Telling is only for you. It is far greater than Women Talking. I wish I could show you how much you really mean to me. If I was asked to describe the love that I have for you using 100 Plants to Feed the Bees: Provide a Healthy Habitat to Help Pollinators Thrive, it would still be impossible, because how much I love you cannot be put into a King's Cage. You will always and forever be embedded deep within my heart.

Love, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter

Sam F | 1355 comments January challenges:

The Fates:

The Fates are three sister goddesses who were believed to assign each mortal their destiny, lifespan, and time of death.
1. Read a book about sisters, or a deity, or written by an author whose religion, faith or spirituality is different than your own: eg. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

The Fates are said to be the offspring of either Nyx (Night) alone, or of Zeus and Themis (Law and Justice).
2. Read a book with a night scene on the cover - Already Home by Susan Mallery , The Brutal Telling , or read a police procedural - The Brutal Telling or legal thriller:

Clotho, the spinner, spins a golden thread that represents an individual's life.
3. Read a book with something gold on the cover - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Charlie Bucket, #1) by Roald Dahl , A Song of Silver & Gold, An Echo in the Bone, or a textile product on the cover: eg. A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

Lachesis, the measurer or allotter of time, determines the length of a human's thread of life.
4. Read a book with a timepiece on the cover - A Lullaby for Witches, a unit of measure in the title - A Long Way From Home, or a parallel/alternate timeline - The Future of Another Timeline

Atropos, the unbending or inflexible one, chooses how and when a person dies, and cuts the thread at the end of their life.
5. Read a book with shears or a blade on the cover - Knives Seasoning & a Dash of Love, or a book that includes a death: - A STUDY IN SCARLETT

In visual arts, the Fates are often depicted as young and beautiful, sometimes working on a tapestry.
6. Read a book about a visual artist - Rosshalde, or with a piece of art - The Lady & the Unicorn, or an attractive young woman on the cover: - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

In literature, the Fates are frequently depicted as older women who write down the fates of humans.
7. Read a book about a writer - The Writing Retreat, The Angel's Game, an elderly protagonist - Orphan Train, Parable of the Talents or where the characters age over the years: - An Echo in the Bone

According to this mythology, humans do indeed have free will, but the Fates know the choices and actions that each person will take.
8. Read a memoir - January First: A Child's Descent into Madness and Her Father's Struggle to Save Her or autobiography, or a book where the characters' decisions significantly impact their lives: - Feed

In Greek, the Fates are referred to as Moirai (plural of Moira), meaning fate, portion or share.
9. Read a book with a character or author named Moira, or whose author name and/or title contain the letters M-O-I-R-A-I: The Handmaid's Tale, All Creatures Great and Small

Sam F | 1355 comments YLTO Goes Hiking:

Here comes the twist. There will be 6 identified stops within each hike- Start, 4 checkstops, and the Finish. I have written a task for each of them. In between each stop, you will read two additional books that is connected to my task and each other. - Like a chain link fence.

Start - my task
Your choice - connected to start book.
Your choice - connected to your second book.

(reset)

Checkstop 1 - my task
Your choice - connected to checkstop book.
Your choice - connected to the preceding book.

(reset)

Reset means you may break the linked books if you chose. If you are a gluten for punishment, you may connect them all.

I actually goffered for Badge one to see if it could be done.

https://1drv.ms/x/s!Atsitmoc4R0-got3H...

My first idea was way too complicated and I couldn't gopher for it. So I had to revise it.

Here's another bit of a twist. You must read each book IN ORDER. We're on a hike and you can't jump back and forth. You follow the trail to its conclusion.

Frodo & Sam's route through Middle Earth:

https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Quest....

Start - Bag End Hobbiton.

Bag End was a smial (underground dwelling) in Hobbiton. It was the residence of the Baggins family.

Task: Read a book with home, homeward, or homebound in the title. - Already Home
My First Choice - A Long Way From Home
My 2nd Choice - "Long" - A Long the Inca Road, Long Walk to Freedom, A Long Way Down, Long Beach Wild, or "Australia"

Checkpoint 1 - Bree

Bree was the first stop that Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin made on their quest, and it will be our first Way Stop on our trip. There, they met Strider for the first time.

Task - Read a book that is the 1st book of a series of 4 (that represents Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin). - Feed
My First Choice - 2nd - The Last of August
My 2nd Choice - 3rd -

Checkpoint 2 - Rivendell

Rivendell is a valley in J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, representing both a homely place of sanctuary and a magical Elvish otherworld.

Task: Read a book with "Sanctuary" or "Valley" in the title, or subtitle.
My First Choice -
My 2nd Choice -

Checkpoint 3 - Moria

Khazad-dûm, latterly known as Moria (The Black Chasm, The Black Pit), was the grandest and most famous of the mansions of the Dwarves. There, for many thousands of years, a thriving Dwarvish community created the greatest city ever known.

Task: Read a book with a cover that is 75% black. - The Bourne Ultimatum (Jason Bourne, #3) by Robert Ludlum
My First Choice - The Bone Code (Temperance Brennan, #20) by Kathy Reichs
My 2nd Choice - All the Old Knives by Olen Steinhauer

Checkpoint 4 - Black Gate

The Black Gate was built by Sauron after he chose Mordor as a land to make into a stronghold. He built it of iron.

Task: Read a book with "Iron" in the title.
My First Choice -
My 2nd Choice -

Finish - Mount Doom

Mount Doom was obviously a stratovolcano, composited by alternating layers of ash and lava. Towering at only 4500ft, it was relatively short.

Task: Read a book that is between 400 and 450 pages. - Summer of '69
My First Choice - Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
My 2nd Choice - Scared to Death
