8. Inti Watana: One of the strangest features at MP, archaeologists think this carved stone served as a sundial or calendar. 4. It has never been determined why the city was built and what its actual purpose was. Some thought it was a spiritual retreat and others believed it served as a country estate for the emperor. ✜ Read a book that is hard to hard to put a genre label on.
5. There are over 150 buildings on the 5 sq miles of Machu Picchu. ✜ Read a series book #5 or a book with a TBR/WTR number that is between 150 and 159.
6. Its remote mile-high location makes it hard to believe that all the stones to construct the buildings were pushed or carried up the mountain by manpower. ✜ Read a book that takes place in a remote location.
7. There are over a 100 flights of stairs leading up to MP with more than 3,000 steps. ✜ Read a book with stairs or steps on the cover.
8. Some people believe that aliens once inhabited the region and built MP. ✜ Read a book tagged SCIENCE FICTION on its GR homepage.
9. Huayna Picchu is the peak you see in the photos of MP. Only 400 people a day are given permits to climb the peak to see its secret temple. ✜ Read a book with a title that starts with H or P.
10. You must bring your passport with you to MP. It has its own passport stamp which is a nice reminder of your Peruvian adventure. ✜ Read a book that takes place in a location that would require you to use your passport.

LIGHT GREEN: GETTING THERE
1. Many visitors choose to hike to MP. With different trails that vary in length and experience, there is one that fits every hiking preference. ✜ Read a book that fits your current mood or genre preference.
2. The Classic Inca Trail is the most popular route. It follows the path of the original Inca trail and has a 4-day and 2-day option. ✜ Read a series book #4 or #2.
3. You will need a permit for the Classic Inca Trail. They are limited but there are other hiking options if you are unable to secure one. ✜ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in CLASSIC INCA TRAIL (Two Word Minimum).
4. The Salkantay Trek does not need a permit. Named after the iconic Mount Salkantay it has been called “One of the World’s Best Hikes”. ✜ Go to GR Lists and type the word BEST in the search feature. Read a book off one of the lists that has the word BEST in it.
5. The Lares Trek is an easier option and the ultimate cultural experience. It takes you through traditional Andean communities that have changed little in the last 500 years, giving you a wonderful look back in time. ✜ Read a book tagged CULTURAL on its GR homepage (It can have a country listed before the word CULTURAL).
6. If you don't plan to hike, you can take the train to Aguas Calientes, which deposits you at the foot of the mountain heading up to MP. ✜ Read a book with a mountain on the cover.
7. There are two rail companies that operate trains to MP: PeruRail and Inca Rail. Both give you options ranging from the budget friendly to impressive luxury cars. ✜ Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in RAIL.
8. At 11,150 feet, Cusco requires acclimation to avoid acute mountain sickness, or AMS. Even though MP is just under 8,000 feet it’s a good idea to give yourself a day in the area to acclimate. ✜ Read a book with a MC with a first name that starts with A, M or S.

9. From Aguas Calientes there are two ways to get to the actual site - by foot or by bus. Both have their obstacles: a two hour stair-heavy trip up the hill or a two hour wait in line to board a bus. ✜ Read a book with a 2 in the total page count.
10. New rules and regulations for visiting MP went into effect on July 1, 2017 making it harder to get tickets. So be sure to purchase your tickets online well in advance to avoid disappointment. ✜ Read a book that was published AFTER July 1, 2017.

DARK GREEN: ARRIVAL ... LET’S EXPLORE!!
1. Watchman’s Hut: This served as a control port for people entering and exiting the city creating a very effective means of security. The impressive view from the hut should not be missed! ✜ Read a “not to be missed” book from this GR list: Most Popular in 2018. Tell what number is was on the list.
2. The Funerary Stone: This strangely carved rock lies next to the Watchman's Hut. Researchers have puzzled over its use but several have suggested it could have been a sacrificial alter. ✜ Read a book tagged MYSTERY on its GR homepage.
3. Temple of the Sun: It is believed this structure with the unusual turret was used as an astronomical observatory. The placement of the two windows are closely aligned to the Summer and Winter solstice. ✜ Read a book that takes place completely in the season of summer or completely in winter.
4. Royal Tomb: At the base of this building is a cave-like structure believed to be a mausoleum for the royal family. ✜ Read a book with a character that is a member of royalty.
5. The Temple of Three Windows: Located in the area called the Sacred Plaza, the Three Windows frame the three facing mountains perfectly. ✜ Read a series book #3.

6. The Principal Temple: Named for its large size, it striking feature is an embedded kite-shaped stone thought to represent the Southern-Cross star formation. ✜ Read a book with an cross shaped object on the cover.
7. House of Ornaments: Located at the highest point of the city, they believed this was used to store ornaments because of the niches in the walls. Its three magnificent walls are covered with intricate carvings. ✜ Read the highest numbered book on your TBR/WTR. This would be the last book you have added to it.
8. Inti Watana: One of the strangest features at MP, archaeologists think this carved stone served as a sundial or calendar. At midday on the winter and summer solstice, the sun stands directly above the stone casting no shadow. ✜ Read a book with something that tells time on the cover (calendar, clock, watch, etc.)
9. The Fountains: Fed from natural spring waters through impressive stone channels, MP's fountains fill over 16 baths which were thought to be used for ritual purification. ✜ Read a book with a word relating to water in the title (ocean, river, fountain, etc.).
10. Terraces: No trip to MP would be complete without visiting the many terraces that drop down the side of the ancient city. These green alleyways make the perfect spot for a nice rest and beautiful view! ✜ Read a book with a green cover.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments I have some questions (again *grins*). All three pertain to the TAN part:

2. Read the book on your TBR with the 2nd highest rating. - I have several books with a 5.0 rating (between 1 and 15 ratings) so do I read the second book on my list rated 5.0 or the first below 5.0? Does the 100+ pages rule apply here as well (my first book below 5.0 is 33 pages only)?

3. Read a half step series book (i.e 1.5) or a book with an indigenous character. - Does this task include prequels = #0.5 or other between the numbers books (sometimes they are .4 or .6 or .25 ...) as well?

8. Read a book with double LL in the title or author’s name. - Do they have to be consecutive or would any title/name with two Ls work?

message 61: by Jan, Moderator (last edited Sep 03, 2018 05:07PM) (new)

Jan | 20919 comments Hi Agnieszka - sorry for the lateness in replying. I am on vacation visiting friends and haven't had easy access to my computer. Let me answer your questions.

1. When you sort your TBR by rating you can either read the 2nd 5.0 book on the list or the first book below 5.0 that is over 100 pages long. Either would work but the 100 page limit does apply,
2. Yes, prequels would count. The other odd numbered one would count also IF they are over 100 pages long.
3. The double LL needs to be consecutive (together).

Hope that answers clearly enough for you.

message 62: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 1573 comments Jan, it is probably in the rules and I'm missing it but if we complete all the tasks in a color then does the color reset. I'm terrible at rolling so I'm pretty sure I will land on at least one color more than 10 times.

message 63: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 20919 comments That's a good question Jillian. Yes, if you use all the questions in a color it does "reset" and you start over with your ten and proceed as you did before. I will make note of that in the Reserved for Questions post.

Thank you!
After abandoning two books for this task I got so fed up with I wanted it just done and hoped I could use a book I liked (despite it beeing a genre I really don't like). Now it takes longer than I wish but that's fine (or at least I have to accept a dissapointment from time to time) especially since I'm reading a book I can use for a different gold-task (even if it will take a while) and it's rather likely I find something with a gun on cover even sooner and that will work as well.
