Even if what you're writing is bad, even if you end up having to delete it all later, the act of writing is the only thing will move us past fear, negative voices in our heads, and creative dry spells into fields of fresh inspiration.

I also believe that, in addition to writing, it is important to feed our creativity in other areas. Listen to good music, visit an art museum, pick up a paintbrush. I engage in a number of secondary artistic pursuits - quilting, painting, piano - for the sheer pleasure of it. I don't play the piano nearly as well as I write, but this and my other secondary art forms help feed and inform my primary art form - writing.(less)

You know, right after I finished it, I thought I might. I loved that book and those characters so much. But when I looked at the cast of secondary characters, I just didn't see anyone who I thought could carry a whole book. Now, that doesn't mean I won't wake up one day and have a Nilson's Bay plot in my head that is just aching to be written; it took me years before I was ready to give Mary Dell Templeton her own book in BETWEEN HEAVEN AND TEXAS, and three years after that before I was ready to write the sequel, my March 29th release, FROM HERE TO HOME. So it is entirely possible that I will write more Nilson's Bay books someday, but I don't have plans to do so right now. (less)

Breakfast Casserole: The Monte Cristo Edition

The world is full of brilliant people.

Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Sir Issac Newton, Wendell Berry, Edith Wharton, and Stephen Sondheim are a small sampling of the famous names I feel should be included on any list of brilliant individuals.

But what about the not-so-famous brilliant people? The unsung heroes whose contributions, large and small, make the world better? For example, the person who
