Steph (angel4492) | 386 comments Hey, Yz, gotta question ... are we allowed to use books we've already read in this challenge? Ex: I've read all of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles which range from 76 - 90's.

I'm good either way, just wanted to double check. Was looking through my list and saw I've read a lot of older books I could (if ok) use on my list.

Thanks :)

message 107: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Steph, books that you've read before the sign-up date do not count unless you decide to reread them. If that's the case with Vampire Chroniclesa - sorry.

Thanks Yz!

Terri (brookfield) call me dumb but how does this work I have no idear?????

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) If you are 30 years old, then you need to read 30 books, one book for each year of your life. And it's not just any 30 books, but one book published in each year. So for instance, if you're 30 you'd need to read a book from 1979, 1980, etc up through 2009. Depending on how old you are, 39 and under get a year and a half to read the books, those over 40 get an extra 6 months. The older you are, the more interesting it gets finding the really old books. lol I have most of the '70s left to read yet.

The problem isn't in finding the books, it's in finding the time to read them! And I refuse to accept that having to read those "really old books" makes me really old. To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, I'm only 24 - for the third time!

Just to get you started on your GR TBR shelf, click on the "list" view, and you can see the publication date for each book. Then you can sort it, too.

Hope that helps.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments Definately up for this one (finally a chance to get through all the Danielle Steele's I've got sitting in a cupboard!!!)

Will probably wait until 1st of January to post my list though.

I wasted so much time looking at all the awards on that site, then going back and searching goodreads for the books--half the awards don't even go back to the 70's, and the ones that do were all over the place on the years. A few were spot on, 1975's award was for a book published in 1975, and some were the next year, 1976's award was for a 1975 publication, but some were all over the place.

What ended up working for me for the few years I was having a hard time with (72, 75, 76, 77) was just looking at the lists of the other poor souls on here who had to find good books from the 70's. :)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Some of us have to go back and find books from the '60s as well. lol

Kasia Have you guys tried the "popural by year" Goodreads lists? That's how I filled in the few years I have had problems with...

For example
1977 - http://www.goodreads.com/book/popular...
1971 - http://www.goodreads.com/book/popular...

But you can set it to any year...

Thanks Kasia

I found a book for my missing year. I know I've got Icebound somewhere. I'd just ordered another book from Amazon to fill the gap - so it saved me some money as well!!

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I will admit BJ that my choices in the 60's and 70's have been rather interesting selections. I tried reading Coffee, Tea or Me? The Uninhibited Memoirs of Two Airline Stewardesses for late 1960's and it was so terrible I had to put it down. That knocked the sequel off my list as well. lol I do have some old Harlequins that seem dated now for the 70's. Mash A Novel About Three Army Doctors fit and I think I can work in one of the sequels I found MASH Goes to Paris. I'm about to read one from 1969 I think. It is called Secret of the Pale Lover which is a gothic romance involving a vampire. (I could only find 2 books for that year and this looked like best of the two choices.) I have a few old WWII novels to read to fill in older years as well. I havn't found a copy of Where Eagles Dare by Alistair MacLean for 1967 yet, but the library does have a copy at least.

It's been awhile... let me post an update to my list. It's so long it requires two posts. lol
I'm half done. Second half was easier than the first.

I am with you Yz, I will be 40 in April so, since I want to participate in this one, I will start my list but not start the challenge until then. I will probably need the 2 years to complete this one.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) geeze, I do NOT know what you babies are complaining about--ONLY 39???? I was thinking about this, cause I could knock out the NUMBER easy--but then you had to put in that caviate about them being published in the YEAR. . . Do you know what kinds of soppy garbage was written when I was born???? We are talking totally, totally, TOTALLY soppy. And preachy--did I mention PREACHY?????

Of course--there are all those Cold War novels. But I don't really want to READ a bunch of gloom and doom CW books. Sigh, so I guess I will pass on this one.

(Pouts and tries to figure out why YZ is picking on her) :oP

(and we're talking 1955 here, guys, so you people with '75 birthdates have it EASY)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I understand Ann. I'm having problems finding books from the '60s that aren't crap. I could probably try finding something at the library but was trying to use books I own when possible and out of my ancient harlequins, etc the best book I found for 1969 was a gothic vampire romance novel. lol For 1967 I'm reading a WWII novel. I've already tried "Coffee, Tea, or Me?" a late '60s stewardness diary and it was so terrible I had to give up on it. lol

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) mwhahahaha--daughter pointed out to me that I COULD do this challenge with almost NO effort. After all--I have the entire (with the exception of 2 privately printed books) works of Andre Norton. First book published in 1929. Last book published 2007. So, I'd only have to find books published since 2007 for this challenge. Of course, I also have the collected works of Robert Heinlein AND of Edgar Rice Burroughs, so I could use one or 2 of those authors if I wanted to. So, that being said--maybe I WILL try this challenge. :oP

And that's a couple of writers to help out all you other "old timers" too. :o)
