I'm fired up about it because this book went back in time to the times of slavery which never cease to get me fired up about how cruelly people were treated and in some parts of the world are continued to be treated. Also, I'm fascinated by how far-reaching the practice was, and how resistant people were to change it even in the face of more financially lucrative alternatives. The ghost in this story ended up being killed because he was a proponent of those alternatives and someone didn't want his ideas catching on.

A. I read The Forever War by Joe Haldeman - won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1976.
B. I read The Forever War by Joe Haldeman - won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1976.
30.2 Sassafrass's task: “What I want to be” meets “What did I become”...
A. When I was in high school, I wanted to be an English teacher, so I read Extracurricular Activities. The main character is an English teacher. Somehow, I doubt that if I had become an English teacher I would have run into as many murders as she does!
B. In college, I discovered that, at the time, I had to take several math courses to get a teaching certificate from the college I attended. Despite my best efforts, they simply wouldn't accept my argument that I would NEVER in a million years attempt to teach anyone math. So, I moved on to plan B and went to law school and became a lawyer - and read The Litigators.
It's interesting, though, that I have done a lot of law teaching throughout my career, so I've wound up doing both!

15.7 - Spring Into Action!
The Paris Vendetta by Steve Berry
This book has both action and adventure listed on its home page.
30.2 Sassafrass's task: “What I want to be” meets “What did I become”...
When I was a kid my parents would pack up my brother and me and park us in the back seat with a piece of masking tape down the center (so we would stay on our own sides) and take us on whirlwind vacations to the national parks camping. (Picture the Clark Griswold family) I decided it would be very cool to be a park ranger and I even thought that up through the beginnings of my college education when I was informed by an advisor that for every job posted at least 100 people applied for it and that was back in the 70's!
So the book I read for part 1: “What I want to be” was
The Rope by Nevada Barr
The main character (Anna Pigeon) is a national park ranger.
This is one of my favorite authors/series. Five stars all the way.
AND
For part 2:“What did I become”...I read:
A Case of Need by Michael Crichton
which is a medical thriller since I ended up with a 37 year career as a respiratory therapist in the hospital setting. Which actually started out as a temporary/part time/fill in job until I found a job teaching school. I loved working in the medical field and felt I did a lot to help people and was an essential part of the trauma and code blue teams.
I never did teach. Not to say that I am not enjoying my current job as a retiree!!!!!!!!
