24/24

1) A book published posthumously
The Master and Margarita. This was about 100 pages too long.

2) A book of true crime
American Lightning: Terror, Mystery, the Birth of Hollywood & the Crime of the Century. It's been in my wish list for a while.

3) A classic of genre fiction (i.e. mystery, sci fi/fantasy, romance)
I originally had A Wrinkle In Time in this spot and The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle as a children's classic. It makes more sense to switch them around.

4) A comic written and illustrated by the same person
Hellboy, Vol. 2: Wake the Devil by Mike Mignola. Probably gonna read the rest of the series while I'm at it.

5) A book set in or about one of the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, or South Africa)
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. I got a ways in and DNF. Not for me. I’m gonna try Flower Net by Lisa See instead.

6) A book about nature
I've never properly read Last Chance to See before. It's time. Switching this out for The Outermost House: A Year of Life On The Great Beach of Cape Cod instead.

7) A western
Ghostwalkers is already in my Audible app waiting to be read. This was surprisingly moving for a book that features zombie velociraptors.

8) A comic written or illustrated by a person of color
Noble Vol. 1: God Shots by Brandon Thomas. I liked this a lot.

9) A book of colonial or postcolonial literature
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. Kinda hated this.

10) A romance novel by or about a person of color
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. Changing this for One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley.

11) A children’s classic published before 1980
A Wrinkle in Time, which I may have read when I was a kid but I don't remember anything about.

12) A celebrity memoir
I still haven't read Yes Please by Amy Poehler, so now's the time. A lot of fun, though it's a bit of a period piece now, since Poehler mentions what a great guy Louis C.K. is several times.

13) An Oprah Book Club selection
Where the Heart Is seems like the least painful, though I considered A Million Little Pieces out of sheer bloody-mindedness. See... I enjoyed this for the most part, but it went to some dark places that I don't think the story warranted.

14) A book of social science
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, because it gets recommended to me a lot.

15) A one-sitting book
I've been meaning to start reading Emma Newman, so I'll go with her novella Brother’s Ruin.

16) The first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series
I recently read Let it Snow and enjoyed Maureen Johnson's story the best of the three. She has a new book coming in January, the first in a series, so I'll pick that; it's called Truly Devious. This was excellent.

17) A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers has been recommended to me. This was excellent.

18) A comic that isn’t published by Marvel, DC, or Image
Quantum and Woody, Volume 1: The World's Worst Superhero Team, published by Valiant Comics.
I think I liked the previous version by Priest & Bright better.

19) A book of genre fiction in translation
Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It's been the basis of any number of films and video games and, I believe, an upcoming TV show. Dry. Very dry.

20) A book with a cover you hate
Goodreads keeps recommending God Save the Queen by Kate Locke to me. I love steampunk, but that cover is hard times.

21) A mystery by a person of color or LGBTQ+ author
Amateur City by Katherine V. Forrest.

22) An essay anthology
I've changed this to Rereadings: Seventeen writers revisit books they love.

23) A book with a female protagonist over the age of 60
My pick is A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark by Harry Connolly.

24) An assigned book you hated (or never finished)
In high school I was forced to read David Copperfield twice. Twice. Will it be better when I'm reading it of my own free will? We shall see.
(Update: 31% done and yeah, I still hate this thing.)
(Second update: Finally, it's over. Three times I've read this thing and three times it's put me off ever reading Dickens again.)

And that's a wrap on 2018's challenge!

Katharine | 4 comments I've done Read Harder for two years in a row and I may not end up doing it in 2018 in order tackle all of the Newbery Medal winners that I've never read before. (I know it's crazy but it's something I've wanted to do for a long time.) I'll use as many Newberys as I can to fill in these tasks, and if I am lucky I might get to any remaining tasks in 2018. But if not, I am not going to pressure myself to get both of these challenges done.

Hi Andrea! I am going to try to do the Popsugar Challenge, The Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge and there's a Sci-Fi/Fantasy group here on Goodreads that has a TBR challenge that I will do as well as the Book Riot. There is also another GR group called "While I was Reading" that I joined that has it's own challenge so that makes 5 but we'll see what happens. lol!

Andrea I am really excited about this challenge. I've wanted to do it for years, but was in a rather painful book slump. I thought about and have assigned books to each, but I am hesitant to mention them. I always change my mind or encounter problems. So I'll post what I want to read in each place. If I don't read that particular book, I will edit and revise this list. Going through this ideas posts have given me lots of great ideas, so this could all change by December 31, 2018. Wish me luck, and good luck to all of you!
