Roll the dice (As soon as you’ve clicked this link, you’ve rolled. Do not click “Roll Again”.)

Levels
1-10 Serf/Robot servant
10-20 Barbarian/Alien invader
20-30 Heroic Warrior/ Star ship commander
30-40 King/Galactic leader
50+ God/Ruler of the Universe

Duration
3 months from start date
6 months from start date
12 months from start date

How it works
1. Pick the amount of books you want to read and the duration you want to play.
2. Pick which board you want to start on Fantasy, Science Fiction, or Combo Board. Start on any Free Ride tile.
3. Roll the dice and move clock-wise through out the board.
4. Land on a Free Ride Space and take a free dragon/spaceship/portal ride to another board or simply roll again and move on the same board.
5. If you want to move to another board but don't want to wait deduct 1 book and move to the nearest Free ride title to move to the board of your choice.
6. Don't like a tile you have landed on? Deduct 1 book and push the panic link to receive a general card like "Read a book from your favorite genre" or "Read a book published in your birth month"

Questions and Answers

Q: Do I have to use the links provided?
A: No, they are just to help you find your books. If you know a book fits the category use it but, if you read it and it doesn't fit you can't use it.

Q: Are re-read allowed?
A: Yes

Q: Are there any page limits?
A: No

Q: How do I deduct books?
A:Two ways: You can either subtract 1 book from the number of books you have ALREADY read or add 1 book to the books that you need to read:
Before: Read 5/20 After: Read 4/20
Before: Read 5/20 After Read 5/21

Q: What list do I use for the Best Fantasy and Sci-fi on the combo board?
A: You can use any of the "Best of..." list to pick a book.

Q: For the movie title do I need to use a book that has actually been made into a movie?
A: Ideally yes but to add more variety you can pick a book from an any list that is a "This should be made into a movie".

Q: I've pre-rolled so can I read my books out of order?
A: No, to make the challenge a little bit more difficult and fair for those that don't pre-roll please read the books in order.

That is open up to the player depending on if you are going to just do one board or all of them. Many Sci-fi and fantasy books tend to be longer books so I suggest a player picking 3 to 6 month as a goal.

This year I have a lot of non-scifi challenges going but this is so great I have to give it a try. Would you mind if I do this as a yearly challenge?

Just one more clarification: can you explain the 'deduct 1 book' penalty?

message 13: by Zuzana (last edited Jun 22, 2014 09:42AM) (new)

Zuzana | 1203 comments Lannele, I was wondering about the penalty as well. Wouldn't make it more sense to add 1 book as a penalty? That way if you "cheat" you have to read 1 book more than was your original plan.

You could do it either way.

Your read count before you pushed the panic link
Before
Read: 5/20

After
Read: 4/20

or you could
Before
Read 5/20

After
read 5/21

Actually doing this board was eye opening in learning about some of the sub-genres since I mainly read epic/high/heroic fantasy. I also didn't realize how much more popular fantasy is than science fiction. I original started out with boards with 34 squares but just couldn't fill the Science Fiction one...

It is actually suppose to be First Contact, I couldn't find enough lists for the other two categories. That tile changed 4 times when I was making this board.

I checked the links and they were the same so I don't get why it was displaying wrong so I changed the name and re-upped it again. I'm really sorry about the mix up and thank you so much for pointing it out.

What?! NOOOO! I totally picked at least 4 scifi books made into movies I wanted to read. :) LOL! So First contact it is.

Glad to be of help. BTW I love this challenge so much. And adding the lists was such a great idea. I just browse and pick up books in advance.

Board

Dice

Pat Quick question...I landed on the Best Sci-Fi Fantasy square on the combo board. When I look at the lists under the combo board, there are all sorts of Best lists, but not one that is specific to the square I landed on. Can I just choose a book out of one of the "best" categories on the board? Thanks!

Yes, you can. Just pick a book from one of the "Best of..." lists, there are a ton of them. I just put the list up to help people to find books for each title easier.

Amber, what was your intention for the Movies tile on the Fantasy circle? When I first saw it, I assumed that it was for books that HAVE been made into movies. But the only links you have provided is for books that SHOULD be made into movies. So now I'm worried that my assumption is wrong.

message 47: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Amber, since I've already done my rolls can I place my books out of order? IE I just read an alien book but still haven't done my first roll for space opera

To give people more variety in picking I added the lists with Should be made into movies, so you can pick off those lists if you want to.

You really should read them in order to make the challenge a little more difficult.
