Faye (The Social Potato) wrote: "I need this list. I wish I knew a book that incorporated my country's mythology, too :))"The Philippines are definitely tough to find books for. : (
I'm proud of this list though *pats self on back* and am really happy it's gotten so big and popular. I also have one for just Koreans too.
If I ever come across anything with Filipinos in it you will definitely be the first to know!
Thanks, THT! I'd really appreciate that!I also bookmarked this list, so I know which ones to request next time I visit the bookstore :D Thank you!
No problem! The full list is here though, in case you were just looking at my votes ... I've unfortunately not read the majority of these either (I just want to get whatever I can find on this list) so I can't really recommend much. It's definitely a good place to start though ^_^
I have lots of shelves too, if you want to get into specific cultures. I try to keep them up as best I can (which is why I don't read as much as I should ...)
Shanna wrote: "Skinwalker by Faith HunterHeroine of Cherokee descent."
Ah, these are my votes, not the full list. I think that one is already on it though. Feel free to vote for your own favorites!
Is Cinder actually Asian? I pictured her Asian, but then I read somewhere that the author said she had blonde hair and blue eyes because (view spoiler). I didn't read the article for myself, so I don't know for sure, but I hope she was really Asian!
I know; it was just disappointing for me to find out that Cinder wasn't Asian. I'm sure that the author must have mentioned her appearance in the book but the entire time I was picturing her as Asian. The same thing happened to me with Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
Well, she's adopted from "Europe" and it's a retelling of Cinderella so the whole point is that she doesn't fit in, especially with her new family. Making her not Asian (as well as not fully human) definitely makes it so she doesn't fit in in a lot of places. It's a wonderful book though that I loved. Check out the prequel to get a feel for it. It's linked above and free.
And I can't remember for sure, but I don't think she's blonde and blue eyed I think she's got dark hair and brown eyes. Her appearance isn't really emphasized beyond the cyborg parts. And if you want to imagine her as Asian or any other character as such, who cares? I ignore descriptions of the heroes sometimes and imagine them how I want to. But really, the love interest in this is swoon-worthy.
I've read the prequel and I liked it enough, but I think I remember liking the novel more. I remembered enjoying it and only having one huge issue: (view spoiler) But I did enjoy it. I just pictured her as Asian. You're right, though. I should just keep imagining her as Asian. I subscribe to that radical school of literacy that believes the author is dead, anyway. I still believe the protagonist in Daughter of Smoke and Bone is Asian. I mean, for God's sake - her name is Karou! I can't help that I read it Kaoru for like... half the novel.I actually don't remember loving Cinder's love interest all that much. I liked her little robot buddy.
Khanh wrote: "You should read The Eternity Cure one of these days."Ha, I just took it off my currently reading shelf and moved it to on hold. Like, 1 minute ago.
Wasn't feelin' it.
Faye (The Social Potato) wrote: "I need this list. I wish I knew a book that incorporated my country's mythology, too :))"Man, I remember us having this conversation and I came across a book set in Singapore and thought I hit pay dirt ... then realized you're Filipino. Dang. Almost! (Well ... not really ...)
Mmmm, fascinating. There's quite a few on here that I've yet to read, even! Though Cinder was awesome. ;)
