Kristen Jorgensen The Mock Newbery group is the best place to find out about the great new books being published.

Join us while we search for next years Newbery award winning books.

Wendy This was the second Newbery 2012 list created. Would you consider deleting it and sending people to the original list? I don't think it's a good idea to have two, and apparently there's no way to merge them.

Edit: looks like someone figured out how to merge them, thanks!

message 3: by John (new)

John Scannell I originally bought "Okay For Now" for my 11 year old nephew. He started to read it but put it down because it was too sad. However, I related to the story line because it was in my era and I was a Viet Nam veteran. I read the book and agreed that it was pretty sad. I did indicate to my nephew that it ends well.
One question though. When Mr. Gregory asks Lil "how old are you?" she replies "I'm twenty-five". I though she and Doug were high school students. Does that age make sense to anyone..?
Thanks,
John

message 4: by Angela (new)

Angela Rhodes Ingles There's a bunch of books on this list that aren't even eligible.

Kristen Jorgensen I am embarrassed to say that I cannot find how to delete the list.

Edit: How did they merge them?

message 6: by Josiah (new)

Josiah I believe that A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and Orchards by Holly Thompson might not be eligible for the Newbery. From what I understand, both authors live outside of North America: Patrick Ness in London, England and Holly Thompson in Japan.

message 7: by Jess (new)

Jess "The Award is restricted to authors who are citizens or residents of the United States" - and I believe Patrick Ness is a US citizen, at least according according to Wikipedia. I do know he was born here, a similar situation to Susan Cooper, who won the medal although the lives in England. Holly Thompson's website says she grew up in New England and lives in Japan - so it depends on her citizenship.

message 8: by Josiah (new)

Josiah Ah, I see. I hadn't previously understood that even nonresidents who have U.S. citizenship could earn the award. This might explain, then, how Christopher Paul Curtis and Sharon Creech are eligible for Newbery consideration.

message 9: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Bigger Than a Breadbox by Laurel Snyder rocked my world. Characters were so well drawn and real and the story had a lovely pace to it. Can't think of a better book to win the Newbery...

Thanks for this explanation. I had wondered how Susan Cooper qualified other than for her excellent writing.

She was just probably kidding around when she said she was 25. They are in 8th grade, I think.

message 12: by Julia (new)

Julia John asked: When Mr. Gregory asks Lil "how old are you?" she replies "I'm twenty-five". I though she and Doug were high school students. Does that age make sense to anyone..?

As ALeXi$ says, they are 8th graders and 11/ 12 years old. She was teasing Mr. I- Own - the- Gleaming Car, and trying to get out of being in his play.

Have you read the novel with your nephew yet? I think you should. Yes, it's sad, but it's also very funny.

message 13: by C.W.J. (new)

C.W.J. Henderson In order to be considered, a publisher must submit the novels to the contest. So not all these books will be entered or considered. My novel has already been entered.

message 14: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Not true, Chris. Any novel that meets the criteria (published in the right year, American author or residing in the US, not published before, etc) is eligible and will be considered if someone on the committee is aware of the book.
