Lauren Oliver, Delirium

“Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there's a tomorrow. Maybe for you there's one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it.
But for some of us there's only today. And the truth is, you never really know.”

Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Synopsis:
Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty's anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen's Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina's tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they've turned the final page.

Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor
Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

Synopsis:

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living – one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers’ arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon’s secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel – a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.

This was not that world.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.

Not until the night a ferocious, otherworldly storm rips through Manhattan, trapping Mason and her teammates inside the school. His arrival tears Mason's world apart, even as she feels an undeniable connection to him. Together, they seek to unravel the secrets of Fenn's identity as strange and supernatural forces gather around them. When they discover Mason's family--with its dark allegiance to ancient Norse gods--is at the heart of the mystery, Fennrys and Mason are suddenly faced with a terrifying future.

Set against the gritty, shadowed back-drop of New York City, this first novel in award-winning author Lesley Livingston's epic Starling Saga is an intoxicating blend of sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action.

The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna
The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna

Synopsis:
Eva’s life is not her own. She is a creation, an abomination—an echo. Made by the Weavers as a copy of someone else, she is expected to replace a girl named Amarra, her “other”, if she ever died. Eva studies what Amarra does, what she eats, what it’s like to kiss her boyfriend, Ray. So when Amarra is killed in a car crash, Eva should be ready.

But fifteen years of studying never prepared her for this.

Now she must abandon everything she’s ever known—the guardians who raised her, the boy she’s forbidden to love—to move to India and convince the world that Amarra is still alive.

What Eva finds is a grief-stricken family; parents unsure how to handle this echo they thought they wanted; and Ray, who knew every detail, every contour of Amarra. And when Eva is unexpectedly dealt a fatal blow that will change her existence forever, she is forced to choose: Stay and live out her years as a copy or leave and risk it all for the freedom to be an original. To be Eva.

From debut novelist Sangu Mandanna comes the dazzling story of a girl who was always told what she had to be—until she found the strength to decide for herself

Black Swan Green by David Mitchell
Black Swan Green by David Mitchell

Synopsis:

From the author of Cloud Atlas, now a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant, and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer

From award-winning writer David Mitchell comes a sinewy, meditative novel of boyhood on the cusp of adulthood and the old on the cusp of the new.

Black Swan Green tracks a single year in what is, for thirteen-year-old Jason Taylor, the sleepiest village in muddiest Worcestershire in a dying Cold War England, 1982. But the thirteen chapters, each a short story in its own right, create an exquisitely observed world that is anything but sleepy. A world of Kissingeresque realpolitik enacted in boys’ games on a frozen lake; of “nightcreeping” through the summer backyards of strangers; of the tabloid-fueled thrills of the Falklands War and its human toll; of the cruel, luscious Dawn Madden and her power-hungry boyfriend, Ross Wilcox; of a certain Madame Eva van Outryve de Crommelynck, an elderly bohemian emigré who is both more and less than she appears; of Jason’s search to replace his dead grandfather’s irreplaceable smashed watch before the crime is discovered; of first cigarettes, first kisses, first Duran Duran LPs, and first deaths; of Margaret Thatcher’s recession; of Gypsies camping in the woods and the hysteria they inspire; and, even closer to home, of a slow-motion divorce in four seasons.

Pointed, funny, profound, left-field, elegiac, and painted with the stuff of life, Black Swan Green is David Mitchell’s subtlest and most effective achievement to date.

All We Know of Heaven A Novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard
All We Know of Heaven: A Novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard

Synopsis:
Bridget Flannery and Maureen O'Malley have been BFFs since forever. Then a brief moment of inattention on an icy road leaves one girl dead and the other in a coma, battered beyond recognition. Family and friends mourn one friend's loss and pray for the other's recovery. Then the doctors discover they have made a terrible mistake. The girl who lived is the one who everyone thought had died.

Based on a true case of mistaken identity, "All We Know of Heaven" is a universal story that no one can read unmoved: a drama of ordinary people caught up in an unimaginable tragedy and of the healing power of hope and love.

message 110: by Jessica (last edited Apr 22, 2013 10:14AM)

Jessica Gomez I loved Requiem! I have to say, usually there is something, some small thing in all books that I would change, I wouldnt touch a thing in this one. It was FANTASTIC! I know some feel that there is no closure for a few characters. But I think that is EXACTLY how it should have been. You could slowly see it all throughout the book. Each character heading toward their ultamate ending. I could almost feel where everyone should be and with whom by the end of the pages. Not that I wish things couldnt have been different for some(two in particular), but it seemed that is just the way things NEEDED to end.

So CONGRATS! Keep it up. Cant wait to get my hands on something new of yours. Thank you for entertaining me! And helping me see a little more clearly how to LIVE FREE OR DIE.

message 99: by Vicki

Vicki Hi Lauren, first let me say, I love you & your writing is amazing!!! I was so looking forward to the Movie, yet scared of how it would turn out....then on one hand the TV Series sounds like an amazing idea too, but as a HUGE fan of yours (a fully grown ADULT fan at that) I honestly don't know what to feel. So, I'm on the fence. I think I'm scared that they will ruin your amazing work in the "transformation" process. IDK I guess I'm nervous that one of my favorite Books is going to crash & burn b/c of the changes.....are you involved in the process? Do you get any say in what happens?!

Erin Lynn EEP! I am so excited that you accepted my friend request. I honestly would have never heard of you if it weren't for the giveaways on this site. I won Before I Fall, and then I ended up buying Delirium and Pandemonium as soon as I finished Before I Fall. Anyways, thanks for accepting. I can't wait for Requiem!

So I moved the mouse over the space where the one next to it was supposed to be and voila! The URL link shown told me that that book was Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver. Needless to say, I didn't wait for the others to load...I just clicked the "Vote" button immediately. Anything wrong? Nope. In case you were wondering, no there weren't any other books on there that I had loved...

Jeremy Stock Hi Lauren, Just wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying the Delirium series, I'm halfway through Pandemonium at the moment. Delirium is my constant pick for best YA novel of 2011, and I've been telling everyone. (I'm discouraged by the amount of attention Divergent keeps getting, when I find your work in Delirium to be far superior, but I keep spreading the word)!

Here's wishing you the best in God's blessings. Psalm 103
