My fave is 101 Salivation, it's a collection of dogs photos by Rachael Hale. I think she made wonderful photographs of the dogs. The pictures always made me smile ;) I'm so grateful to have that book :)
Flush: A Biography introduces us a great story, evolving around Elizabeth Barrett and her pet Flush. Yet, I cannot call it an ordinary "dog book", because it's heavily focused on the British social class system, and it has a strong philosophical depth.

How about some kids books about dogs?"Rosie, A Visiting Dog's Story" and "May I Pet Your Dog?"
by Stephanie Calmenson
There are a couple of books on this list that have the word "dog" in the title that aren't really about dogs at all. "Dog Years' would be one of them, but it's a great book for other reasons!

There are numerous lists here that don't care about content as they only want the word in the title so that could be what caused the confusion. I just voted on one of those.
I hope a librarian will delete the ones that don't fit here. They are the only ones who can do it.

The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant was a great book about the famous football player who was convicted of dog fighting. It gave a lot of information, some not so pretty about the ins and outs of the inhumane treatment of this terrible sport. But it did have a happy ending for many of his fighting dogs. Avery good read.Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man by Michael Hingson was the best dog book I have read in quite a while. It's about a blind man who survived the 9-11 attack thanks to his Guide Dog who helped him and 76 others get out of Tower 2 before it went down and got him to safety. At the Dog Hero Awards this year his guide dog was awarded 1 award and ended up being the Hero of the Year!!! Get this book, you won't be sorry!!
i love all those books i am reading a really good one now its about a dog !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are books on the list that do not even mention a dog in the title or in the pages of the book. They seem to come for one member. One of the books that do not belong is "Fifty Shades of Grey"! Others are the Harry Potter books, Twilight, The Lovely Bones, The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splended Suns, The Life of Bees, etc. Hopefully the member will edit her list or a librarian will remove the books.
Carolina wrote: "Why is Water for Elephants here?"Water for elephfants SHOULD BE DELETED from this list. There are a little about of the dog, but it's not a main line of story and in almost any books would be something about dogs
She Came From Heaven/Rosanne PellicaneA tribute to my dog Whimsey, but then I think all dogs are gifts from above.

Removed.
The Underneth by Kathi Appelt-Wonderful story! My daughter read this in 5th grade. Very sad, but a great read.&
The Boy Who Spoke Dog by Clay Morgan (The Boy Who Returned from the Sea-2nd book) These are two books by son really enjoyed when he was in elementary school.
The Ten Best Things about Barney is about the death of a pet CAT. Should not be on the dog list. Quite a few of these other books should be removed simply because dogs are such a very small part of the book.
If Good Dog Carl et al makes the list, don't forget Paddy's Payday, also by Alexandra Day.
My favorite is I'm Listening With a Broken Ear. It's a really touching story about what we learn from our dogs.
Michele wrote: "A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas is good for this list"Three dog life was one of my favorites!!!!!
I was skeptical about the Harry Potter titles, but my spouse says there is really an important dog in some of them (page 2). Okay, fine. But #221, Anna Karenina, is indefensible, and it's gone. NOT a dog story: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Not a dog book either: The Secret Life of Bees, from page 3.

Oh crimony. I love Twain too, but Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are NOT dog books. Behave yourselves, people.

from page 4, as well as:
The complete work of Robert Frost is a dog book? Sure, and I'm the elephant man. Gone:

#449, Fifty Shades of Gray. No.

Every time I tell myself I'm done editing and now I will just let myself vote, I see something that cannot stay here. The Illiad and the Odyssey, gone from p. 7.

Trolls. Who else would toss a bunch of presidential bios on the end of a dog book list? And not only presidents; we also have--or had--Alexander Hamilton:

Teddy Roosevelt:

George Washington and John Adams

Does anyone know of a children's chapter book about a boy who owns a dog, and he later finds a three-legged dog. He's only allowed to keep one, so he chooses to keep the three-legged dog. It's been driving me crazy that I can't remember the title of it. I just remember that the book really upset me as a kid because I was upset that the boy gave up the dog he'd already had for a long time who must have loved him.
Gotta say The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time isn't really a dog book (other than the dead one that started the whole thing)

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is NOT a dog book! It briefly features a small dog who is dead for most of the first half, and makes virtually no appearance in the second!

Lara's Gift by Annemarie O'Brien is the ultimate dog book. The protagonist is a kennel master's daughter in pre-revolutionary Russia and dogs are a key, fascinating and emotional part of the story!
Looking for a dog book by a South African author. Name of book "Looking for Jack"?? Story takes place in Vietnam
Thanks Morgan

Thanks. I did that, but didn't see it on the list. Hopefully it's there. Appreciate your response.

Once again--you have to type the name of the book into the window provided after you click the tab.

Nice list! I have read 44 from the top 100 and 145 from the total of the list. I am not trying to read book 2+ in the mystery + dog series.Anyone who want to have more conversations on dog books might want to consider joining the group with just the name 'dogs'. I have even started a conversation on the 83 lists of dog books. There is a lot that could be talked about with dog books.
Stephen wrote: "Alice wrote: "Anna Quinlan wrote a good one - wasn't it just called Good Dog?"Alice, you mean 'Good Dog. Stay' by Anna Quindlen. I have not got a round tuit to reading the copy I have."
Nevertheless, it is on the list. I put it there myself quite a while back. You must have missed it. As of this writing it is at #90.

Thanks Donna, So far I have only looked at the first 100 books and will still work on the rest in the list. Have you read Good Dog, Stay?
So I started working through this list from the back. I have read a lot of the books in the beginning of the list (after I take out volume 's past book 1 and children's books).Always dangerous when I do more research on dog books as when I research them, I go 'oooh, that looks interesting,' and then I go 'I wonder how much a used copy would cost.' This time for me I was pretty good, I only ordered two:
Search Dogs and Me: One Man and His Life-Saving Dogs by Neil Powell
Muster Dogs by Aticia Grey
(Not sure if that first book was on the list, I think I was looking at another book, and in a review it mentioned the book on Search Dogs I ordered.)
Then I added another 28 books to by TBR book list I keep in excel.
Fun list, but wish it was cleaned up. Some books just have 'Dog' in the title but don't deal with dogs. Others have summaries that don't mention a dog. Lot's of kids books and volume x in a series. Not sure what can be done on them other than to push them off to other lists.
Still a fun list to go through. it is so hard to know about all the dog books that are out there. Unfortunately the ones in the top are more 'most well known' dog books.

The Boss Dog, by MFK Fisher
Flush, by Virginia Woolf
Lad a Dog, by Albert Payson Terhune
