rem:  Hullo, Pat, and welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.

PAT: Hmm. First, our home is always decorated for Christmas by the end of October with eleven trees ranging from eighteen inches to ten feet tall. Yeah, Christmas is my favorite holiday. About the trees, all except four are stored fully decorated. Second, I write in a recliner with my laptop on a lap desk. Third, I’m married to my high-school sweetheart. In June we celebrated our fifty-seventh anniversary.

rem:  Fifty-seven years! Congratulations! What is your favorite quotation and why?

PAT:  “It’s never too late to follow your dreams.” Which is my motto because I began my writing journey after I became a senior citizen.

rem:  Love this one, Pat. I wasn’t exactly a dewy young maiden when I started writing either.  What do you do as a hobby?

PAT:  Other than decorating for Christmas, rem: well, yeah…  I enjoy watching movies and when the mood strikes tackling jigsaw puzzles. Oh, I also like Sudoku.

rem:  I’m not into Sudoku so much but I do love a good jigsaw puzzle.  What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

PAT:  Mostly reading.

rem:  Touché.  If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

PAT:  Honestly, I can’t think of a single time I’d go back to. I enjoy watching movies about the past, but living without modern conveniences not so much.  rem: NOOOO KIDDING!!!  Seems I wouldn’t have been a good pioneer woman.

rem:  What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

PAT:  I imagine Christian fiction authors view the genre from different perspectives. For me, it is the opportunity to create flawed characters who draw on their God-inspired strength to overcome heart-wrenching challenges and obstacles. Although I don’t quote scripture in my books, my Christian worldview drives my plots and characters’ reactions.  rem: which is what makes your characters and stories so relatable.  Developing those characters and struggling through their challenges continues to strengthen my personal relationship with my savior.

rem:  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

PAT:  A story has to capture my attention on the first page and hold it fast through the third chapter. If that doesn’t happen, I put the book down. Which doesn’t mean the book wasn’t good, it simply didn’t appeal to me. My biggest pet peeve, character’s names I don’t know how to pronounce.

rem:  Right. It’s hard to relate to a character if you can’t even pronounce their name.  LOL  What are you reading right now?

PAT:  I’m in between books, because I’m creating a new series.

 

rem:  Oooohhhh…. And this reader is eagerly awaiting it.  Tell us a little about your writing journey.

PAT:  In 2005, my husband and I retired on the same day. We spent the next nine years ticking off every item on our travel bucket list. Then in 2014, a woman who had drifted in and out of our lives since the eighties tragically passed away. I decided to write a story loosely based on her life, but with a happy ending. That exercise awakened a passion to write. With a lot prayer, I began studying the craft and joined American Christian Fiction Writers and Word Weavers International. In 2017 I was blessed with my first publishing contract for The Secret of Willow Inn, book one in the four-book Willow Falls series. At that time, my goal was to publish ten books before retiring a second time. That goal is now twenty. I plan to continue writing until I can no longer think or type. My husband assured me he’d let me know if the first happened. Oh, about that first book I wrote, Jenny’s Grace was rewritten half a dozen times and finally published in 2022.

rem:  i LOVED Jenny’s Grace!! What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

PAT:  From a writing perspective, becoming intimately familiar with my characters and finding out where they’ll take the story. But I also enjoy talking to book clubs and speaking to groups about my journey.

rem:  Our characters truly become friends to us, don’t they. (And mine dictate the story to me; I never know what’s happening next… )  What genre(s) do you write and why?

PAT:  Although I have one published romance, the other seven are women’s fiction. I chose this genre because the stories are driven by protagonists’ emotional journeys and revolve around family and complex interpersonal relationships. For example in The Secret of Willow Inn, Willow Falls series book one, Emily, a reporter and aspiring writer in a town struggling to survive, befriends Sadie who returns from prison after serving thirty years for killing the town hero. Their relationship develops and evolves through the entire series.

rem:  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

PAT:  Although my current project is the Blue Ridge series which will publish in 2024, I’m thrilled to celebrate Jenny’s Grace one-year anniversary with a new cover.

rem:  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

PAT:  Jenny’s Grace is a romance about a woman tormented by a secret that holds her heart hostage. Jenny, a gifted chef, finds refuge in the sleepy town of Madison, Georgia. When she falls in love with handsome real-estate agent, Sam, her plans for a short-term fling turn into a desperate fight to protect him from her past.  My favorite part of the book is when Jenny comes face-to-face with the truth and discovers the power of grace. The story is also about Sam who despite Jenny’s rejection, finds the strength to continue fighting to capture her heart.

rem:  Oh, how my heart hurt for her as I read her story. And I may have developed a fiction-crush on Sam…  What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

PAT:  Every challenge, no matter how devastating or difficult, can be overcome.

 

rem:  So, so true. One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

PAT: John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This one verse says it all.
