You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (NKJV) Matthew 5:14-16
IRISH / GAEILGEIs tú solas an domhain. Ní féidir cathair atá suite ar chnoc a chur i bhfolach. Ní lasann siad lampa agus ní chuireann siad faoi chiseán é, ach ar sheastán coinnle, agus tugann sé solas do gach duine atá sa teach. Go lonródh bhur solas mar sin os comhair fir, ionas go bhfeicfidh siad bhur ndea-oibreacha agus go dtabharfaidh siad glóir do bhur nAthair atá ar neamh. (NKJV) Matha 5:14-16

Vivyo hivyo nuru yenu na iangaze mbele ya watu, wapate kuyaona matendo yenu mema, wamtukuze Baba yenu aliye mbinguni. (NKJV) Mathayo 5:14-16
(NEG 1979) Matthieu 5:14-16

rem: Hullo Kristena, and welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.
KRISTENA: I’m a procrastinator. Yep, that’s me. If you don’t give me a deadline, it doesn’t get done. I’m also lazy, but I’ve turned that negative into a positive. I don’t want to spend the time redoing something, so I try to find the most efficient but quickest way to do it.
I’m a homebody and would happily hang out at home with my hubby all day long. Once I do get coaxed out of the house, I love hiking and spending time in nature.
I don’t usually read just one book at a time. A question I often get asked is “How can you keep all those books straight?” to which I reply with my own question, “Do you watch more than one TV series at a time? How do you keep all those shows straight?”
rem: Touché. What is your favorite quotation and why?
KRISTENA: I think the one that stands out the most right now is something Martin Luther said to his barber.
“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”
Prayer can often be thought of as an after though – something we do when all else fails or when we’re dug into a hole. But God want an intimate relationship with us, and He wants to take care of our daily needs and our problems. I haven’t gotten to that place where I can say, “I’m so busy I need to pray longer.” I tend to cut my prayer time short on hectic days. But this is my goal and something I strive for.
rem: Oh, yes, prayer is so critical, and not a last resort. What do you do as a hobby?
KRISTENA: This last year I’ve gotten back into fish keeping and I am enjoying it immensely. I want to get something new for my fish tank each week, and my hubby has to hold me back.
rem: What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?
KRISTENA: That’s a tough question. That’s like asking someone what someone would be doing if they weren’t breathing. I can’t imagine my life without writing. But if I had to, I think I would be fluttering from project to project trying to fill a hole.
rem: Nor can I at this point! If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?
KRISTENA: I don’t think I would go back into another era. I’m happy right where I am. That may be surprising to hear from a historical fiction author, but God placed me here, in this time, for a reason, and I am content with His decision. Now, ask me if I would like a time machine so I can visit other times, and I will be that most enthusiastic person in this room. I’ll be ready to jump on and visit all the most historic places and events.
rem: What do you think is significant about Christian fiction? How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?
KRISTENA: I think Christian fiction is one of the most powerful witnessing tools we have. I love both nonfiction and fiction, but they have completely different functions. Nonfiction is for those who want to know, or already know, and want to learn more. Fiction is read for enjoyment. Often, it’s an escape— to get away from the world around us and immerse oneself in the brand new world, whether that be action and suspense, fantasy or just finding something new to fall in love with. With Christian fiction you can bring that world to those who don’t know Christ, and, step by step, introduce them to our powerful God and his love and desire for them. For someone who already knows Christ, it’s a way to share deeper truths and challenge them to go deeper.
Christian fiction was an integral part of my life as a teen and young adult. It still is. I see God working in the life of characters. I fall in love with God all over again. I see His love and grace through their eyes and their issues. I recognize what I need to change in life— in my relationship with Christ.
rem: So well said. What are you reading right now?
KRISTENA: As I said above, I don’t normally read one book at a time. Right now, I am reading seven books. rem: Holy Oy!!
Of Heroes and Kings – By Mesu Andrews
Black – By Ted Dekker
Not My Will – By Francena H. Aronald
Eden –Brennan McPherson
The Unseen Realm – By Dr Michael S Heiser
Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus – By Nabeel Qureshi
The Pursuit of God – By AW Tozer
rem: That’s a lot to keep up with! Tell us a little about your writing journey.
KRISTENA: I’ve written little things all my life, a few of which appeared in High School and Church magazines. But my first real effort at a novel began when a friend pushed me to enter NaNoWriMo in 2008. I finished a very rough draft of Under Penalty of Death. That’s when the writing bug hit in full force. I rewrote my manuscript and entered it into a contest at my first writing conference in 2013. It won second place! I couldn’t believe it. Needless to say, it still needed a lot of work. In 2021, I self-published, Under Penalty of Death, book one of Slavery of the Heart series, on Amazon. The next year, at a writer’s conference, Elk Lake Publishers LLC (ELP). Offered me a contract for Under Penalty of Death and its sequels. I have work with Peggy Ellis, an editor at ELP. I revised it and added several scenes. Peggy is wonderful and I love how the book turned out.
The new version of Under Penalty of Death will be coming out in January. I am working on an audiobook version as well.
I’m also working on book two of the Slavery of the Heart series which I’m planning to have out early 2025
rem: What do you enjoy most about being a writer?
KRISTENA: I love how my characters take off and tell their own story. I start out with a backbone and story idea, but the characters are the real writers. I’m just as surprised at what happens in the story as my reader are. This keeps writing fresh, for me. I also learn about the nature and power of God as I struggle with my characters. I battle with my own sins as each of my character battle with theirs. My life has been radically changed as I give myself to God in the same way they do. It keeps me on my knees and has molded me in Christ.
rem: You sound like me—I’m essentially ‘taking dictation’ as my characters go about their lives, telling me what to write. LOL What genre(s) do you write and why?
KRISTENA: I’ve written almost every genre in short stories, but my novel is historical fiction written in Biblical times. I love reading that time period, so I wanted to write it also. I’m not limiting myself to that period, but for now, for my present novel, Under Penalty of Death, and the sequels, that’s where I’m focusing my time.
rem: Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
KRISTENA: Under Penalty of Death is the story of Keturah, and her struggle to become the woman of God she’s intended to be. Her story begins in 58 AD
Here’s the back of book blurb:
Keturah idolizes her brother Justus. He stood his ground with Abba, declaring Yeshua Messiah, resulting in Keturah’s desire to know more about Yeshua, and Abba proclaiming Justus dead to the family.
Today, Keturah became a woman, but her joy ends in terror when Abba accepts an offer for her betrothal. Devising a plan to escape the arranged marriage is dangerous, but it works. Now she’s able to find her brother and live as she chooses. Every choice she makes turns into disaster. Manipulating to get her own way puts her in difficulty and danger. Women get stoned for what she is doing. What happens if Justus and her new friends see through the deception? Her actions may alienate her from her brother forever. Most of all she wonders how much Yahweh demand of her life.
is a young girl in a Jewish family betrothed on the day she becomes a woman.
rem: What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
KRISTENA: I love Keturah and her relationship with Onesimus. Both where thieves, manipulators and liars and both are facing the possibility of death as punishment for their actions. This brings them together, uniting them in a special friendship.
Keturah isn’t a perfect Christian. She doesn’t except Christ and then make all the right choices. In fact, just about every choice she makes is wrong. That was me when I became a Christian. There wasn’t a sudden, major difference in my life. It was a struggle that took years.
I still get more things wrong than I get right. So, my own life was the inspiration for Keturah’s life and failures. Keturah’s main stumbling block is the desior to get her own way and her manipulating and lying to get it. She wants to live for Christ, but she runs ahead and inserts her own idea of what she thinks God wants. How often do I do that! Because of this, I feel Keturah is relatable. She is me and you. She struggles and fails before she learns.
rem: What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?
KRISTENA: That God can change anyone, and He will, in His own time. Often, we want to make the change and we insert our own will and timing into God’s. We don’t need to “seek the change.” We need to seek God and He will make the change.
rem: Yes and Amen! One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?
KRISTENA: Oh, another hard question. This can change from day to day, depending on what situation I’m in and what I’m struggling with. But as an author I do have a “writer’s” favorite verse;
John 1:3
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
This verse reminds me that I’m not the author, God is. And I can’t write without Him.
rem: One of my favorite verses also. Anything you’d like to add?
KRISTENA: I’m just so glad I was able to be here on your blog and share with your readers. I’m excited about my book, Under Penalty of Death, coming out through Elk Lake Publications LLC. I hope you will all get your own copy. I’m sure you’ll love the book and I hope it will challenge you in your walk with Christ.
I also want to remind you that authors literally live on your book reviews. That is what drives their book and brings in sales. Amazon is hard pressed to even promote the book unless it sees reviews. So support the authors you read by going to Amazon, GoodReads, Barnes & Noble’s, or wherever you by your books and leave a comment, even a two or three word comment helps the author and the reader deciding on whether they should spend their money.
rem: You got that right!! Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
