CAROLYN:

I used to play the clarinet

rem:  What is your favorite quotation and why?

CAROLYN:

From the Bible, so we know it’s true: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8.28, NKJV)

rem:  Such an amazing and comforting promise because we all go through situations and seasons that seem and feel hopeless.  What do you do as a hobby?

CAROLYN:

I’ve recently taken up ballet. I used to do it as a child, and I’ve loved returning to it. (And I might be picking up dozens of details I’m going to use in an upcoming story)

rem:  Is there anything we do that doesn’t eventually feed our writing? LOL What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

CAROLYN:

I used to teach high school English, so quite possibly that (although I didn’t love it. Kids these days…). My dream job if I wasn’t writing would be something to do with music, either creating, recording, or producing songs, soundtracks, etc

rem:  Once upon a time I wanted to be a high school English teacher… If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

CAROLYN:

I do think the English Regency era (1810-1820) would be a fascinating time to live in. I’ve written a number of books set in this time period because it was a time of great social and technological change, with everything from social reform to exploring new nations. In those times the church was considered part of the status quo, and attendance at church was the norm, and yet people following in the footsteps of Jesus were considered quite radical in their ideas and their treatment of others. People like evangelical Christian William Wilberforce, who campaigned for the abolition of slavery, were at times ridiculed for their beliefs, yet his actions (& those of countless other Christians of his era) ultimately led to worldwide change for the better.

rem:  Attending church may not be the norm like it once was but so many Christians (CINO’s) think that church attendance is their salvation.  What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

CAROLYN:

I love the fact that as Christian writers we can speak God’s truth through fiction.  rem: YESSS!!!  Eg in my book The Breakup Project, I used real life miracles that occurred on my husband’s mission trip to the Philippines as part of the story. Commemorating truth in a story helps it become a little more accessible than a sermon sometimes. I also find writing fiction a way to work through some of what I feel God is speaking to me about, whether it be things I need to learn, challenges I’m facing where I need to be reminded of God’s goodness, etc. I’ve been so encouraged over the years to receive many emails and messages from readers saying how my books have made them stop and think, or have challenged, or God has encouraged them in some way. Just as God can use a worship song to penetrate a heart so God can use other artistic expressions, like books. rem: SO MUCH YESSS!!!   I think writing out via characters and scenes some of my questions and challenges on my own relationship with God journey has helped me understand Him better, and proved cathartic, as well as reinforcing truth about His word. Christian fiction is like a written testimony of God’s faithfulness.

rem:  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

CAROLYN:

I’ve read some books which just seem to lack that pinch of salt that makes the flavor sing. For me, I’m a fan of humor, rem: DITTO so if it is too staid or ‘politely nice’ then it falls a little flat. Similarly, I like the characters in a book to have some zest and grit to them, to not be perfect, but to be working through the challenges of life – just like I am. Perfect characters (who never do anything wrong, are rich and / or the typically beautiful or handsome types) are both boring and unrelatable, and therefore those kinds of books are a little dull to me.

rem:  What are you reading right now?

CAROLYN:

I’ve been working on writing the next book in my new Christian hockey series (The Love Penalty, book 2 of Northwest Ice) so I’m reading some other hockey series to help me get into the right frame of mind. I’ve also got another small-town romance book out next week (Muskoka Spotlight) so I’ve been reading other small town books, like Jenny Glazebrook’s Where our Hearts Lie to help get into that headspace.

rem:  Love that title! And congrats on your release next week. Tell us a little about your writing journey.

CAROLYN:

I started writing after watching the Vancouver Winter Olympics and seeing an Aussie girl walk into the closing ceremony holding hands with a North American boy. I was fascinated how two elite athletes from opposite sides of the world could meet let alone sustain a relationship, and after trying my best to find out who they were without success, I made up their story. In doing so, I discovered how much I LOVED writing, and that first book quickly became two, three, more, until I wondered what I should do about all these books sitting in my computer. So I started entering writing contests with the hope to get feedback and maybe one day an agent or publishing deal, and eventually started winning, and yes, got the agent and publishing deal, but not for what I’d entered. Instead of a contemporary, my agent was able to sell my Pride and Prejudice-type Regency, The Elusive Miss Ellison, to Kregel Publications, who were looking to expand into historical romance, and I ‘just so happened’ to have a book that fitted at the right time. That first book led to a contract for two more books in that series, then three more three-book series. I still had some contemporary books I wanted to see published, so several years ago I expanded that way too, firstly via the Independence Islands series then the Original Six and Muskoka romance series. It was so awesome to finally see (a much rewritten and edited version of) that first book, Love on Ice, finally release to the world last year! I love writing books in series that I keep seeing ways to expand – like a new series releasing next year based on a ranch outside Calgary that has its own western movie set! This originally came from research for Fire and Ice, but I couldn’t leave such an intriguing concept alone, so A Cameo for a Cowgirl, book 1 in the Three Creek Ranch series, comes out next year.

rem:  What a cool journey!  What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

CAROLYN:

I love being able to incorporate the real things of life into fiction – truth becomes more palatable that way! It’s also amazing to have people from across the world write and say they enjoy my books, or have felt God encourage or convict them of something. My husband and I used to pastor a church, so I feel like my books have a much greater audience than any sermon I ever shared. And I just love writing that first draft, starting a book when it’s a world of possibilities (I tend to write by the seat of my pants without too much planning), getting the zest of the banter and spark of conversation between characters. And because I’m someone who can write fast I like to hit my word goals as a story develops. That’s so fun!

rem:  Such a blessing when you hear from readers. What genre(s) do you write and why?

CAROLYN:

I write historical (Regency and mid-1800s Australian) and contemporary Christian romance. I started writing my Regencies because I wanted to read something that was like Jane Austen, yet with Georgette Heyer’s wit, and incorporated a solid God thread too. As an Aussie I like to write books that showcase some aspects of history of my country that I love. I’m a bit of a sports fan, so I’ve enjoyed showcasing realistic characters in my hockey romance books. And as someone who lives in a small town, I really enjoy writing about the relationships of family, friends, and community in my contemporary romance series too.

rem:  I have to confess, I’m an Aussie fangirl! I’m an actress and j’adore the Aussie accent. Of course it’s not an accent to you… #winkwink  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

CAROLYN:

My latest release is Fire and Ice, book 1 of the Northwest Ice romance series. It sees a sports reporter reunite with the hometown hockey hero who moved away ten years ago, in a tremendously awkward on-air encounter that I think is hilarious and hope will put a smile on your dial.  rem: Just reading that makes me smile.  I loved exploring the challenges of being a female sports reporter in an often antagonistic male-dominated world, and how that relates to being a Christian being forced to go against the flow.

My current project is Muskoka Spotlight (out next week), which sees a Hollywood heartthrob escape to Muskoka, Ontario, to escape the negative publicity from a public meet-and-greet gone spectacularly wrong. He meets an aged care nurse whose faith and commonsense, down-to-earth nature intrigue him to know more. It’s an opposites attract book that I hope shows how God can use our normal everyday lives to be a witness of His love and mercy.

rem:  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

CAROLYN:

In my recent release, Fire and Ice, I have a scene where we see our sports reporter heroine (re)finding her faith in a white chapel in the Western town that’s on the hero’s family ranch. I love writing salvation scenes, and think it’s fairly powerful, and an important factor before the Christian hero decides she can be pursued romantically. I like that she’s a really strong heroine (she has to be in her line of work) and the fact she takes this step to faith not because the hero demands it of her but because she’s listening to the gentle wooing of God. And the scenes following, when our hero discovers she’s finally back in relationship with God, are really touching too.

I think in this age of #MeToo and recognizing and calling out misogyny in the workplace, that this is an important book for women (and men) to read and be encouraged to stand up for what is right. There is a powerful part right at the end which draws attention to how we all need to be part of the solution in helping stamp out the demeaning of women, and encouraging us all to see others as created by God and therefore worth respect.

rem:  Carolyn, that is so powerful. What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

CAROLYN:

My tagline on my website is ‘Stories of hope, heart and humor’ and I really want all of my books to leave readers feeling like there is hope in this world. Hope to be found in God, in relationships, in life, no matter how dark the circumstances. For Fire and Ice and Muskoka Spotlight I really hope that readers see that God can use all kinds of situations for His purposes, that His plans might be bigger than what we expect or realize, and that we can trust Him with our futures.

 

rem:  Well, that sounds like it goes back to your Scripture quote above—all things work together… One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

CAROLYN:

Let’s go with Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.”

rem:  Human nature wants to manage all the details, NOT let go and trust God or anyone.  Anything you’d like to add?

MY REVIEW

Oh how well I can relate to Josie. Past failures loom over my head and would hold me back if I let them.

But God is the God of grace and forgiveness, and new beginnings. And what feels like a failure turns into a new dream for Josie. One she jumps into headlong, 1000%, owning the exhilaration and challenge of it.

Ms. Chiavaroli captures the human essence in Josie, and each of her characters. Josie is real, battling very real struggles. Tripp is honorable and gallant and devoted. The requisite difficult relation, the villain, an angsty teen, the family dynamics—both conflict and peace. The progress as the old family home takes on a new life and purpose. Bonus for this reader—my degree is design.

The author interweaves her storyline, from Josie’s adventure and [SPOILER] in New York, with the pastoral life back home, with Tripp’s family and growing business.

The Martin family is the March family, Where Grace Appears is the 21st century version of Little Women.
