CHAT THURSDAY-on-SATURDAY – HEIDI GAUL

Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Heidi Gaul.

FAST FAVES

Twitter or Facebook: I prefer the friendships I can form on Facebook. It’s just so easy to connect with, and create lasting relationships with others.  rem: me too!!

Coffee or tea: I drink my morning coffee weak. I mix flavored (hazelnut or coconut are favorites) and with decaf. As to tea, I drink it all day, year-round. I love herbal blends and flavored decafs.

Dogs or cats: Both. Our sweet old German shepherd mix, Gunny, crossed the Rainbow Bridge years ago, and we’ve held off on getting another. Simply put, it wouldn’t be fair. No other dog could replace that precious mutt! And as to cats, I can’t remember a time in my life I haven’t had at least one for a pet. I love them! Since we live at the edge of town and close to a river, many people dump their cats near my home, so I’m never in need of a pet.

Call or text: Neither. I just don’t like being available for constant contact with anyone. Emails provide me the privacy I prefer.

Kindle or print: Print, always. I love sharing my favorites with friends.

Hugs or kisses: Hugs.

rem:  Hullo Heidi, welcome. Tell us three random things about yourself.

HEIDI: (1) I’m quirky – it runs in the family. If eccentricity shows up in DNA, mine will be laced with it. rem: I’m definitely going to have to steal this! (2) I love writing fiction, even though I’m known for nonfiction. (3) If I had to choose between travel and financial security, I’d choose travel. Wanderlust is in my blood, just as much as quirkiness.

rem:  What is your favorite quotation and why?

HEIDI:  The last one, because I was blessed to share about myself

rem:  What do you do as a hobby ?

HEIDI:  I love to hike, but during the cold and wet seasons, I crochet. I learned it as a child, and there is nothing as satisfying as seeing a loved one’s face upon receiving an afghan or scarf.

rem:  I love hiking too. How fun would it be if we could hike somewhere together!  What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

HEIDI:  If you’re referring to an alternate career, I’d still be in the optical field. I spent almost twenty years helping patients with their eyewear, and I loved every minute of it. It’s a perfect mixture of creativity and attention to detail.

rem:  Very cool career. If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

HEIDI:  I am crazy about the period ranging from 1850 through the Victorian era, here in the United States. I can’t even count the number of books on the gold rush I’ve read, or how many ghost towns whose streets I’ve walked, imagining what it might have been like.

rem:  What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

HEIDI:  Though I’ve written fiction, and my agents have shopped it, my novels have yet to be picked up a publisher. But as a nonfiction writer, I’ve seen my view of Jesus widen.

rem:  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

HEIDI:  I love odd characters and an engaging plot. If I pick up a book with a predictable story line, or flat characters, I set it aside. Formulaic writing can seem almost an insult to me, as a reader.

rem:  Indeed, an insult to any intelligent reader… (oops, did I type that outloud?)  What are you reading right now?

HEIDI:  I just finished reading No One Will Miss Her, by Kat Rosenfield. Though she doesn’t write for the Christian audience, I love her suspense voice. She always keeps me guessing.

rem:  Gotta love a good—and well-written—mystery.  Tell us a little about your writing journey.

HEIDI:  I’ve written dozens of books, from anthologies to devotions to prefaces and sidebars. I’ve outlasted three agents and am currently looking into another. And my heart lies not just in writing fiction for Jesus, but writing anything He chooses. I’m blessed by my Boss.

rem:  Best Boss ever!  What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

HEIDI:  I love having the privilege of painting word pictures for my readers, pieces that will bring them just a bit closer in their faith walk.

rem:  Ooohh, I love the way you say that.  What genre(s) do you write and why?

HEIDI:  I write devotionals. Those are what I am known for, and am most published in. And they are where my writer’s heart lies. However, I do enjoy writing Contemporary and Women’s Fiction, as well, and hope someday to see one of my novels on a store or library shelf.

rem:  Dream a little dream…  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

HEIDI:  I’m currently on deadline for a series of sidebars for one of Guideposts miracle books.

rem:  Haven’t read a Guideposts book in a while but I do love them. Always so encouraging.  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

HEIDI:  I love that this one in particular will focus on the way our senses are involved in everyday miracles.

rem:  Oh, Heidi, that’s so profound! I think we lose something of the Divine when we discount the human element; after all, He created us with those emotions and senses; indeed, He Himself has those emotions.  What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

HEIDI:  Faith through the tough stuff and being aware of God’s presence even in the tiniest details of our lives.

rem:  Oh yes!! Every moment, even the darkest valleys.  One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

HEIDI: Yes. I live in the knowledge and peace of Isaiah 43:1b (NKJV): “…I have called you by name. You are Mine.” What could possibly matter more?

rem:  Can’t argue with that! Anything you’d like to add?

HEIDI:  No. I’m just happy to be here!

rem:  Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!

CHAT THURSDAY – ALYCIA MORALES

Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Alycia Morales.

FAST FAVES

Coffee or tea   Coffee

Call or text   Text

Kindle or print   Print

Hugs or kisses   Hugs

rem:  Welcome, Alycia. Tell us three random things about yourself.

ALYCIA:

I’m a mama of 6 – 1 stepson, 4 bios, 1 foster/adopted daughter.I’ve been a stand-in on a Christian Slater movie.I’ve been in People Magazine.

rem:  What is your favorite quotation and why?

ALYCIA:  That’s a really difficult question to answer. If I had to choose one, it would probably be from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserable: “To love another person is to see the face of God.” God created each and every one of us. We are created in His image and likeness. So when we look at one another, we see God in His creation. I just love that!

rem:  What do you do as a hobby?

ALYCIA:  Read. LOL  rem: of course  Watercolor painting. Coloring. Hiking. Taking pictures.

rem:  What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

ALYCIA:  Writing is my longtime passion. But if I had to go back and choose something else to do for a career, it would probably be counseling or something in the music industry (behind the scenes). I’ve always loved having deep and transformative conversations with people. Music has always been a passion almost equal to writing.

rem:  Also one of my passions, music is so powerful.  If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

ALYCIA: Oy. Another tough one to answer. rem: seems to be a habit of mine. Tee hee hee  You know, I’m not really sure. I would love to go back in time to the days when Jesus was here on earth. I would love to have witnessed His sermon on the Mount. I would also love to have witnessed the American Revolution and the founding of our nation. And after that? Maybe the Victorian Era? Steampunk fascinates me, so to have that Victorian era experience to draw from would be neat. Finally, I would probably go back to the 70s. Classic rock. I can’t choose one…

rem:  You sound like me—and Lays potato chips—can’t choose (eat) just one. LOL  What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

ALYCIA:  Christian fiction is significant because it gives us the opportunity to share the love of Christ with the world in a way they may not otherwise receive it. There have been so many times when I’ve read a book and it has impacted my life on a level equivalent with a sermon on a Sunday morning or a prophetic word or a friendly conversation. It’s transformative.  rem: I couldn’t agree more.  Being a writer has drawn me closer to Christ. Recently He’s been showing me how important our words are. We are going to be held accountable for every idle word we speak or write. Our words hold creative power. The power of life and death, blessing and cursing. That knowledge makes me stop and think about every single word I’m putting out there.

rem:  “Our words hold creative power. The power of life and death, blessing and cursing.” Absolute Truth!!!  When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

ALYCIA:  REPETITION. I cannot stand repetition. Whether it’s words or emotions or anything else. I’ll never forget picking up a book and finding that the character was dealing with the same depressing emotions halfway through as she was in the beginning. I quit reading.

rem:  I agree. Repetition is beyond annoying. It’s off-putting and tiring, and offensive.  What are you reading right now?

ALYCIA:  The Long March Home by Marcus Brotherton and Tosca Lee. It’s a military story about the Bataan Death March. I cannot put it down. It’s action packed and heartbreaking at the same time. It follows three friends as they come of age and fight to survive during WWII.

rem:  I love Tosca Lee! That sounds like a powerful story.  Tell us a little about your writing journey.

ALYCIA:  I’ve been writing since I learned how to write my ABCs. I’ve kept a diary/journaled since I was 8. In high school, a couple of my poems were published. But I didn’t start to write fiction or book-length nonfiction until 2010. I started with fiction then, but I ended up freelance editing so much that I set my own writing aside for a season. It’s only been about two years since I picked it back up. Writing is definitely a journey!

rem:  What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

ALYCIA:   I am far better at expressing myself with clarity on paper. rem:  YESSS!!!  I like being able to get a story out and then go back and edit so my words aren’t all jumbled. I am far more confident when I have the time to think about what I want to say than when I have to talk off the cuff.

rem:  What genre(s) do you write and why?

ALYCIA:  I write YA Fantasy, because I love making up story worlds and the characters that fill them. I also love teenagers and being able to tell coming of age stories. It’s such an age of self-discovery. Being able to take a character from thinking they know themselves to finding new aspects of their character, personality, and abilities is so much fun!

rem:  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

ALYCIA:  I am currently working on my first YA Fantasy series. I don’t have a title yet, and I’m still fleshing it out. But it’s about a group of friends who know something isn’t right with their world. They keep having flashes of a world full of light and joy, and it looks like the one they currently live in, but their current world is muddied. What they come to realize is that everyone around them has forgotten their history, and they set off on a quest to restore people’s memories and return their world to the way it’s supposed to be.

rem:  Wowie, Alycia!! That sound amazing.  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

ALYCIA:  Right now (since it’s still in its beginning stages), I’m exploring life as God intended it versus how it is in our world.

rem:  What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

ALYCIA:  It will probably end up being that everyone has an important, God-given role in the story of life. It’s up to us to live it abundantly.

rem:  One of life’s greatest tragedies is not discovering our God-given identity and role.  One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

ALYCIA: Not really. God highlights different verses to me in different seasons of my life. I love them all.

rem:  Very apt. He never changes but seasons change and He is always with us as we change.  Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (NKJV) John 14:1-3

IRISH / GAEILGE

Ná bíodh do chroí buartha; creideann sibh i nDia, creidigí ionam freisin. I dteach m’Athar tá mórán manaí; mura mbeadh sé amhlaidh, bheadh a dúirt mé leat. Téim chun áit a ullmhú duit. Agus má théim agus áit a ullmhú daoibh, tiocfaidh mé arís agus glacfaidh mé chugam féin sibh; go bhféadfása a bheith san áit a bhfuil mise. (NKJV) Eoin 14:1-3

SWAHILI / KISWAHILI

(NKJV) Yohana 14:1-3

GERMAN / DEUTSCH

(NTV) Juan 14:1-3

DAILY SCRIPTURE – ISAIAH 55:6-7

master - daily Scripture Bible

ENGLISH / BÉARLA / ΑΓΓΛΙΚΑ / אנגלית / WAMAREKANI / АНГЛИЙСКИЙ / ENGLISCH / ANGLAISE / INGLES

Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. (NKJV) Isaiah 55:6-7

IRISH / GAEILGE

Iarr an Tiarna agus é a fháil, glaoch air agus é i ngar dó. Tréigfeadh an t-aingidh a shlí, agus an duine éagórach a smaointe; go bhfillfeadh sé chun an Tiarna, agus déanfaidh sé trócaire air; agus dár nDia, óir tabharfaidh Sé maitheanas go flúirseach. (NKJV) Isaiah 55:6-7

SWAHILI / KISWAHILI

Mtafuteni Bwana maadamu anapatikana, mwiteni maadamu yu karibu. (NKJV) Isaya 55:6-7
