BLOGWORDS – Thursday 29 June 2023 – CHAT THURSDAY – MELISSA WARDWELL
Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Melissa Wardwell.
FAST FAVES:Twitter or Facebook – ugh – neither but you will find me on FB more ( I do enjoy TikTok and Instagram)
Coffee or tea – Tea – Scottish Breakfast to be precise
Dogs or cats – Cats
Call or text – text – Then I can recall what was said
Kindle or print – YES – I don’t have a preference
Hugs or kisses – Hugs – Kisses are for My leading man
rem: Tell us three random things about yourself.
MELISSA: I am an ordained teacher/minister, I can’t remember anything if it isn’t written down (and even that isn’t always a guarantee), I cry at every wedding
rem: I’ve heard you preach and I must say I enjoyed / appreciated your message. What is your favorite quotation and why?
MELISSA: “If you are what you eat, I only want to eat the good stuff.” From Disney’s Ratatouille
Suamalie Islands
rem: Touché! What do you do as a hobby?
MELISSA: I wish I could tell you that I do something creative or exciting, but really, reading is my hobby.
rem: Nothing wrong with that! (said every author everywhere) What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?
MELISSA: I have no idea. I was a bridal consultant before, maybe I would go back to that. The thing is, I was a SAHM for 5 years before I started writing and now my last child is about to start her senior year of high school. I’m frighteningly excited to see what happens when she is out in the world and making her own way. It is time for “mom” to do her thing.
rem: I love that, “frighteningly exciting” If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?
MELISSA: 1940s – though it was a difficult time in history, kindness, patriotism, and a strong community seems to be the order of life on the home front.
rem: What do you think is significant about Christian fiction? How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?
MELISSA: Christian Fiction has a beautiful opportunity to show the world how it looks to live out your faith and not just offer lip service. We have to study the Word, translate certain themes, and share that information in a way that doesn’t feel condemning or overly preachy to the reader while entertaining them in some way. Being a writer of CF has taught me how to research and study these themes a little more thoroughly so that they can be properly shared without confusion.
rem: Well said. When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?
MELISSA: if I can’t feel SOMETHING, good or bad, by the end of chapter three, I’m done. Writing in first person is trending right now and each time, I feel like I am listening to the Peanuts teacher. There are only a handful of writers who have pulled me in with their first-person narration from the first page.
rem: What are you reading right now?
MELISSA: The ARC of Positively Penelope by Pepper D Basham and Man of Shadow and Mist by Michelle Griep
rem: Ooohhh!!! I recently read Man of Shadow and Mist! Ya just can’t go wrong with one of Michelle’s books. Tell us a little about your writing journey.
MELISSA: It feels as if I’m on a roller coaster right now. For two years, all I did was write. Now that my publication commitments are only one book a year, I have more time for things like working at the church as a secretary or in prayer and studying for the occasional sermon. It is a struggle to stay focused on my writing now because I have other plates spinning in the air that require equal amounts of attention. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
As far as writing goes though, I’m really excited about the ideas for future stories that are coming to mind. I use the Notes app on my phone often to type out ideas while I am doing work for the church or writing my next book. Sometimes this proves to be a problem as more recent ideas, involve historical plot lines or a rom-com involving a bookish mathematician hero and a tattooed, biker chick (this last one of my daughters actually plotting it with me, which has been great for our mother-daughter moments.)
rem: Ah yes, the ideas never stop, do they? What do you enjoy most about being a writer?
MELISSA: I’ve always had an imagination that has the potential to get a little wild. Writing makes it possible for me to share some of my greatest imaginings.
rem: What genre(s) do you write and why?
MELISSA: For now, it’s contemporary romance. I’m hoping to dip more into the historical genre soon.
rem: Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
MELISSA: My latest book is about to be released on August 28th. An Unexpected Gift is about a bridal consultant and her friends who have worked for a high-end resort salon in the Suamalie Islands for years and have decided to take charge of their knowledge and break out on their own. Kiana knows how to blend practicality and professionalism, a strong work ethic, and relaxation. With no time for mistakes or changes in plans, she’s also decided to forgo romance (for herself). There just isn’t enough time in the day. That is until the early arrival of one of the groomsmen of Something Suamalie’s first booking throws everything off balance, including her thoughts on long-distance dating.
I had a lot of fun writing this particular book because it mimics, one of my favorite 90s romcoms, You’ve Got Mail. This book is also the first book of three that I will be writing for this collection. All three of my books will mimic 90s romcoms that I enjoyed. I am currently writing the next book, All An Act.
rem: What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
MELISSA: I love that this one is actually a summer read. Nothing heavy, nothing overdone, there isn’t even a strong faith tone to this one. And it’ll be the same for the other two stories as well. Most of my books have very heavy lessons in each one and when I started writing, I told God that I really needed a mental break, and these books have proven to be what I needed to write.
rem: What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?
MELISSA: My biggest desire, when any reader reads my books is that We all make mistakes, and we all fall short, but God’s love is steadfast.
rem: One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?
MELISSA: I used to end it got me through a lot of hard times, but now that I’m reading my Bible every morning as I am on my second trip through the Bible, I find it difficult to pick just one. I can share my favorite promise that I’ve learned so far is — from the beginning, God has created ways to have fellowship with mankind. He craves fellowship with us, and the more we learn about him, the more we crave fellowship with him.
rem: Oh, yes! So much yes!! Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!

THE BLURB
“The world seems full of good men—even if there are monsters in it.”
–Bram Stoker, Dracula
England, 1890
Vampires are alive and well in North Yorkshire, leastwise in the minds of the uneducated. Librarian Rosa Edwards intends to drive a stake through the heart of such superstitions. But gossip flies when the mysterious Sir James Morgan returns to his shadowy manor. The townsfolk say he is cursed.
James hates everything about England. The weather. The rumours. The scorn. Yet he must stay. His mother is dying of a disease for which he’s desperately trying to find a cure—an illness that will eventually take his own life.
When Rosa sets out to prove the dark gossip about James is wrong, she discovers more questions than answers. How can she accept what she can’t explain—especially the strong allure of the enigmatic man? James must battle a town steeped in fear as well as the unsettling attraction he feels for the no-nonsense librarian.
Can love prevail in a town filled with fear and doubt?
THE AUTHOR
I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I’ve been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write–except for that graffiti phase I went through as teenager.
Ms. Griep never disappoints! Her characters always have such personality and color.
Rosa Edwards is utterly effervescent, ever interacting with their customers, and going out of her way—at no small risk— to help others.
Sir James Morgan is the dark and brooding type, lending credibility to the stories and rumors. Avoiding sunlight [SPOILER] only solidifies the rampant superstitions.
Naturally Rosa doesn’t buy into the rumors, but instead befriends the foreign stranger.
Reading a story by Ms. Griep is falling right into the pages of the story. Riding along with Rosa as she visits friends and clients. As she ventures out to the dark manor, crossing the rickety bridge, flailing in cold waters. James, keeping to himself, and to the shadows and dark as he seeks answers, pursues his mission.
Ms. Griep weaves and twists and turns her story, teasing the reader, dangling that last page like a carrot.
Rosa, the unstoppable force. James the unmovable. Which force prevails?
