rem: Welcome, Keely. Tell us three random things about yourself.
KEELY: I jumped out of an airplane. I collect old foreign coins. I and everyone in my family has a May birthday.
rem: 1 – Wow! How cool is that—I’d love to be able to do that! 2 – I, too, am fascinated with old coins. 3 – That’s a busy month for you! What do you do as a hobby?
KEELY: Gardening, crochet, research, and watching old movies.
rem: I love gardening! What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?
KEELY: Crying into my pillow. rem: I hear ya! No, I’m kidding. I played bass guitar professionally for a long time. I still love to play music, but the years caught up to my hands.
rem: I knew you played – didn’t realize (I forgot?) you played professionally. If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?
KEELY: Jesus’ time on earth in the flesh. It would be amazing to see His years of ministry here.
rem: Amen! How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?
KEELY: I invite the Lord onto the page with me, so writing fiction has become an act of worship. rem: I love this! And trusting Him through the years of publishing decisions and even praying for my readers has kept me in His presence more.
rem: When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?
KEELY: Hm, just one? Bad writing. Sticking too much to the story formula trends. Or not knowing the formula at all. Just as with the writing itself, I enjoy a writer who knows story rules and knows how to artfully break them. I love to be surprised by originality.
rem: What are you reading right now?
KEELY: Lots of classics. Sounds boring, and sometimes it is, but I’m a homeschool mom who is knee-deep in high school literature right now.
rem: What genre(s) do you write and why?
KEELY: I get bored easily, so I like to mix it up. The Uncharted series is written like historical fiction, set like SciFi, and filled with romance. My husband calls it “Histori-fi-mance”. 
He’s cool like that.
rem: “Histori-fi-mance” Love it! Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?
KEELY: Book #12 of the Uncharted series is about to release. Uncharted Grace is Caroline’s story, but she and her siblings aren’t the only newcomers to Good Springs. The chance for a fresh start brought physician Jedidiah Cotter to the village too. Caroline and Jedidiah both must learn how to give grace, as well as how to receive it. It’s a lesson I needed to learn too.
rem: Why do you love this book? Why should we read it?
KEELY: When I created the Land, an isolated South Atlantic island, I wanted to use the setting to reveal Biblical principles through symbolism. My goal was to exhibit the life of God being lived out in human relationships.
Well, just like in real life, some communities in the Land are better than others at sticking to their values across the generations.
The village of Good Springs is one of those rare places where most people treat others as they want to be treated. It’s a place I’d like to live, and so I couldn’t resist moving siblings Caroline, Noah, and Lena to Good Springs to let them experience living in a community that values giving grace.
rem: I can’t wait to read it! What is one take-away from your book that you hope readers identify with?
KEELY: Grace is unmerited favor. It is getting something we don’t deserve. Grace comes from God, and it can (and should!) flow from one person to another.
