BOOK RELEASE EVENT – TEN DAY COUNTDOWN – DAY FOURSlide7

I’m so EXCITED and I hope y’all will CELEBRATE with me! Christmas at Blue Heron Inn, a FourSquare Christmas novella is my first novella. Release date is TUESDAY 25 APRIL. To celebrate, I’m hosting a LAUNCH PARTY on Facebook, including a giveaway and excerpts. Details to follow…

THE BLURB

How many disasters can one Christmas holiday survive.

It all started with old wiring and a fire.

The Elliott family had always enjoyed gatherings with extended family and friends. Especially at Christmas. They had discovered Blue Mountain Chalet, near Asheville, North Carolina; it became their venue of choice, and had hosted their crowd the past three years.

Until the wiring in the hundred-year-old inn sparked a fire, destroying much of the beloved inn. And two weeks before Christmas, too.

With no venue, it seemed their fledgling holiday tradition was a bust. Until Gigi called on a friend who ran a B&B at Heron Cove. All systems were go and their holiday was rescheduled for the last week of January.

Until eighty-four-year-old Gigi had a stroke. On New Years Day. But with Gigi’s free spirit, and three weeks of recovery and therapy, and all systems were go. Again.

One disaster follows another as the family and friends gather to celebrate Christ’s birth. But even with a lost aunt and uncle, muddy dogs, a jellyfish sting, and dogs eating the turkey, there is joy and peace and laughter at Blue Heron Inn. And love. Lots of love.

NOTE: There is a brief episode of racism in this story that might be offensive to some readers.

THE AUTHOR

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

110122 - rem profile picMy characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.

There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.

I am a Christian and write from a Christian world view, but some of my characters are not believers and therefore do not abide by the Bible and the guidelines for life that we take for granted. My books contain some mild swear language in a few places—and demonstrate the difference when the grace of God prevails.

THE EXCERPT

TOAD’S TOWING

“Hello, Mr. Brock?”

“Speaking.”

Eddie, the mechanic at the garage, explained that the battery was, in fact, dead. He went on to explain that although the alternator itself was still good, the alternator belt had snapped. Without the alternator converting the current, the battery failed. And had no juice to restart the car after their break at the rest stop.

“How long to fix it?” It was already after six.

“Won’t take long once I get a belt in here. Don’t have one in stock for your vehicle.”

Donnie was too tired to respond.

“My brother over in Lexington’s got one. I already called him. Said he’ll run it over in the morning.”

Donnie sighed, weary and exasperated, but not angry. It wasn’t this guy’s fault, after all.

“I reckon I could head over there tonight and pick it up.”

“You have no idea how much I appreciate that.” Donnie swiped his hand across his face.

“No problem, sir. You seem like good people in need of a good deed.”

Overwhelmed, both from fatigue and Eddie’s kindness, Donnie couldn’t respond right away. “How long will it take?” He didn’t want to ask how much extra to do the work after hours.

“Won’t take me half an hour once I have the belt. Takes me an hour to get to Lexington, though—tell you what. Hang on a sec.”

Donnie relayed the additional three-hour delay to Elise.

“Toad—that’s my brother. He’s already on the road. Be here in forty minutes. Car’ll be fixed in an hour.”

Donnie was flabbergasted. And speechless. “That’s very kind. Tell your brother thank you for me.”

An hour later, a blue van pulled up outside the diner where Donnie and Elise were waiting. White lettering proclaimed, TOAD’S TOWING & SERVICE, followed by an address and phone number.

A black Chevy Blazer pulled in behind the van.

“That’s our car!” Cady hollered and jumped up and down. “That’s our car!”

A tall gangly man entered and scanned the restaurant. At 8:00 only a handful of guests remained; it wasn’t difficult to recognize the stranded family.

“Hi there.” He held out his beefy hand. “I’m Todd Andrews, Eddie’s brother. Everybody calls me Toad.”

A second tall gangly man entered the diner and joined them. “You must be Mr. Brock.”

“I wasn’t expecting…”

“That was very kind of y’all to bring us our car.” Elise returned Toad’s handshake. “I’m Elise Brock.”

Still speechless, Donnie shook both hands.

How much do we owe you?” Elise took charge.

“Well, see.” Toad and Eddie sat at the table and signaled to the waitress for coffee. “Here’s the thing.”

Donnie groaned, dreading the astronomical figure that was sure to come.

“We spotted some gifts there in the back of your car. All wrapped for Christmas and whatnot.”

“And we figured we might extend a little Christmas gift of our own…”

“No charge.” Eddie laid the bill on the table, marked in bold red letters, PAID IN FULL.

After a bit of dickering, and a couple of rounds of coffee and chocolate cake, Donnie and Elise climbed back in the car.

“Y’all have a safe drive, now.”

“And a Merry Christmas.”

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – I AM THERE

Father God gave me this word on 19 August 2009. It was true then, it’s true now. Nothing takes Him by surprise.

I am there.  Selah.

In every event, I am there.  I am there before you—and I prepare the way for you.  But I tell you this—I am there before it happens, for I am eternity.  I see the beginning from the end and the end from the beginning.  I know the plans I have for you—I know each step and every stumble, I know each hardship and every victory.  And I am there with you—I am there before you are there.  For I go before you to prepare the way for you.

But your enemy—he is running to catch up.  Even catastrophes at his own design, he is late.  I am there—he is not.  He is distracted by his own busy-ness—and he cannot keep up.  Even you, my child, my beloved, endure hardships and suffering before he can catch up.  You know your joy and victory and release before your enemy remembers and realizes it has even begun.

And in his flurry in these last days, his carelessness and sloppiness increase. His efforts become more and more futile.  Even the disasters and catastrophes of his hand have less impact.  For the harder he makes his attempts, the sillier they become.  The harder he tries, the greater the decrease of the impact of his efforts.  And the further he sinks.

But look to Me says the Lord of Hosts.  For My efforts remain steady and yet the results increase.  For every heart that is turned to me, revival is magnified, My Kingdom is glorified and I am there in the midst of you.

These are the days of Elijah—behold, I come and I am with you in all things, in every moment.  I have been where you are—and I know the plans I have for you.

DAILY SCRIPTURE – MATTHEW 6:9-13

master - daily Scripture Bible

ENGLISH / BÉARLA / ΑΓΓΛΙΚΑ / אנגלית / WAMAREKANI / АНГЛИЙСКИЙ / ENGLISCH / ANGLAISE / INGLES

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (NKJV) Matthew 6:9-13

IRISH / GAEILGE

Ar an mbealach seo, mar sin, guigh:

Ár nAthair atá ar neamh, go naomhófar d’Ainm. Thig do ríocht. Go ndéanfar do thoil ar talamh mar a dhéantar ar neamh. Tabhair dúinn inniu ár n-arán laethúil. Tabhair dúinn ár bhfiacha, mar a mhaithimidne dár bhféichiúnaithe. Ná tabhair i gcathú sinn, ach saor sinn ón olc. Oir is leatsa an ríocht agus an chumhacht agus an ghlóir go deo. Amen. (NKJV) Matha 6:9-13

SWAHILI / KISWAHILI

Kwa hivyo, ombeni hivi:

Baba yetu uliye mbinguni, Jina lako litukuzwe. Ufalme wako uje. Amina. (NKJV) Mathayo 6:9-13

GERMAN / DEUTSCH

(NTV) Mateo 6:9-13

Jeremy Jernigan likes to cook. He likes to try new recipes. And he likes to experiment and create his own recipes. And since they’re at the beach, this month is all fish and seafood.

CRAB CAKES

INGREDIENTS

2 large eggs3 tablespoons mayonnaise1 teaspoons Dijon mustard1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning¼ teaspoon salt¼ cup finely diced celery1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley1 pound lump crab meat – check for and remove any hard cartilage. (If you can only find jumbo lump crab meat, you may need to break the pieces up a bit. If the clumps are too large, the crab cakes won’t hold together well.)½ cup panko bread crumbs

DIRECTIONS

Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy clean-up. Combine the eggs, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, Old Bay, salt, celery, and parsley in a large bowl and mix well.

Add the crab meat and panko; using a rubber spatula, gently fold the mixture together until just combined, being careful not to shred the crab meat.

Shape into 6 cakes (each about ½ cup) and place on the prepared baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat a large nonstick pan over medium heat and coat with oil. When the oil is hot, place the crab cakes in the pan and cook until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Be careful as oil may splatter.

Serve the crab cakes warm with the tartar sauce.

TARTAR SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

1 cup mayonnaise2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish1 teaspoon Dijon mustard1 tablespoon minced onion1-2 tablespoons lemon juice, to tasteSalt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, relish, mustard, onion, and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

SERVING SUGGESTION

Serve with dinner salad, hush puppies, and fried okra.
