THE BLURB

It’s all fun and games until somebody gets caught.

Jeremy and Jordan Jernigan both had a chip on their shoulder. A chip their father left there when he walked out on them. They were five.

It was every man for himself, and Jeremy and Jordan learned to fend for themselves. Rules didn’t apply. Punishment and consequences flew out the window. Life was a lark.

Until they met the one friend who wasn’t a friend. Who promised to take care of them and protect them. But rules did apply with Big Mac. And punishment was harsh.

Will Jeremy and Jordan be there for each other as they always had? Will Jordan be able to rescue his twin when Jeremy ends up in jail? Or have they gone too far this time?

NOTE: This story deals with issues—juvenile delinquency, gangs, and drugs—that might be difficult for some readers.

THE AUTHOR

“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”

There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.

I am a Christian and write from a Christian world view, but some of my characters are not believers and therefore do not abide by the Bible and the guidelines for life that we take for granted. My books contain some mild swear language in a few places—and demonstrate the difference when the grace of God prevails.

THE BOOK

51jS7xzZ1lL

THE BLURB

In the harsh Scottish highlands of 1565, superstition and treachery threaten a truce between rival clans. It’s a weak truce at first, bound only by an arranged engagement between Anne MacGregor and Niall Campbell-the heirs of the feuding families.

While Niall wrestles with his suspicions about a traitor in his clan, Anne’s actions do not go unnoticed. And as accusations of witchcraft abound, the strong and sometimes callous Campbell heir must fight for Anne’s safety among disconcerted clan members. Meanwhile his own safety is threatened with the ever-present threat of someone who wants him dead.
Will Niall discover the traitor’s identity in time? Can Anne find a way to fit into her new surroundings? Will the two learn to love each other despite the conflict? With a perfect mix of a burgeoning romance and thrilling suspense, this book is historical fiction at its best.

THE AUTHOR

gk5j2a4kmu27pomnmar5t42dg2._SX500_CR0,0,500,500_Kathleen was born in sunny Long Beach, California, one of four daughters of a career Army officer.

As a former Army nurse with a master’s degree in counseling, she has lived in Germany, Korea, Maryland, Texas, Virginia, Louisiana, Florida, Washington, D.C., Alabama, California, and Colorado.

She is married to a retired Army helicopter pilot and is the mother of two sons-one deceased- and stepmother to another son and a daughter, both of whom have been very busy making her a grandmother.

In her free time, Kathleen likes to quilt, play the Celtic harp, and be companion and caretaker to an aging English cocker spaniel. She is also a companion and the wifely caretaker to her husband, who is not quite so aged 🙂

Kathleen began her career writing contemporary romances and soon moved to historical and futuristic romances. She sold her first book, a futuristic romance, in April 1990 while stationed in Korea as an Army nurse. Additional romances soon followed, until she had sold a total of fifteen books in the general market, establishing a loyal readership along the way.

Since that time, she has received numerous awards for her work, including a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice award and Career Achievement award, and The Literary Times award for Literary Excellence in the Field of Romantic Fiction. She was also a Romance Writers of America RITA finalist.

Kathleen now focuses her writing talents in the area of inspirational fiction, offering readers characters who struggle to redefine their growing faith in everyday life.

MY REVIEW

Rich with vivid descriptions and taut action, this story pulls the reader right in. With historic accuracy, Ms. Morgan weaves a tale filled with tension and suspense. I especially appreciate the author’s knowledge of the language of the time.

Though I could well relate to Anne’s resistance to give up that which she holds most dear, I wanted to shake her for being so smug. I wanted to give Niall a good shaking, too, for not being more clear in his demands.

The story pulls the reader through, with unexpected twists, page after page to the end.

FROM TURMOIL to BLESSING – A CHRISTMAS DISASTER

When our children are young, we go above and beyond to make sure that everything is perfect. Especially at Christmas and in a new home.

In 2012, our family had to move into a new home after spending nine years in our first house. We bought that house in 2007 when our boys were two years old and six months old and our daughter wasn’t even a thought. There were so many memories that had taken place in those nine years. Our daughter’s birth, the several fun birthday parties, homeschooling our children, and the constant open-door policy we had with the neighbor boys across the street. Moving was a choice we were forced to make at the time and many tears were shed. The kids struggled quite a bit with the change.

For our first Christmas in the new house, we made plans to have a family gathering for my husband’s side of the family. We’d been meeting at a local bar for years and we were finding it less friendly as our kids grew up. Plus, the kitchen, dining, and living areas were larger than in the previous house, making it possible to host gatherings at last.

The week of Christmas, the kids and I spent days making our Christmas goodies of cookies and candies. We cleaned the house from floor to ceiling and made sure there would be plenty of seating for everyone. We even had games ready for a little fun instead of just chatting mindlessly.

Two days before the gathering, the rumored icy weather looked to be heading to Michigan though we were unsure how bad it would be. But our house was tight and our cupboards and refrigerator were full. We chatted with the family that was set to come over that Sunday and they were eager to gather, especially since the last time we had seen one another was the summer after my husband’s grandmother passed away.

Sunday, December 22nd came along and everything changed.

I woke that morning with the sound of sleet hitting my bedroom window and the wind howling. Choosing to live in a little bit of denial, I didn’t turn on the television to watch the news. If they were going to give me a bad report, I didn’t want to hear it. I wanted the day to be perfect for the kids and my husband, who had missed his family quite a bit. Sadly, as soon as I exited the bathroom, my husband was perched on the edge of his chair with his eyes affixed to the radar on the television and the state of Michigan covered in shades of blue.  Without looking at me, he informed me that church was canceled as the building had no power and the road conditions were worsening.

We texted the family and let them know that if they still planned to brave the weather, we had plenty of food. At first, the more local ones said they would still be there. The ones coming from up north informed up that there was no way they could make it. Within a couple of hours, the lights on the tree went out and the microwave beeped at its sudden lack of power. My husband and I waited for the power to flicker back on, but after fifteen minutes, it still hadn’t so we had to cancel the gathering.

But that is where the blessing began.

That night, we all went to bed, hoping that when we woke in the morning that the power would be back on. So, we tucked everyone in bed, tossed a couple of extra blankets on each kid’s bed in case they needed it, and prayed for protection. I cannot say our prayers were answered in the way we wanted but in another way. My mother called me in the morning to see if we had power and when I told her that we did not, she informed me that my grandmother and aunt who lived a block away, did and were inviting everyone over. Since my husband was at work, we packed up our chihuahuas and spent the day over there. When my husband got home from work, the power was still not on and the house was down to sixty-two degrees. He hung blankets on the windows and created nests for the two cats on the couches before running a HOT shower and using the steam to bring the air temperature up a couple of degrees before coming over to my grandma’s.

That night, surrounded by family, we had a wonderful dinner together, the kids played Skip-Bo with their great grandma, and the kids and I even stayed the night while my husband went home to sleep before work the next day. My daughter had the best sleeping arrangement of all. She’d had so much fun playing games with her GB that she asked if she could sleep with GB. Of course, GB let her while I slept on the couch and the boys slept on the floor on mats.

The next morning, still no power at home, and it wasn’t expected to come on until almost a week after Christmas but a problem was looming. Grandma was getting anxious with all the people in her house (she had dementia) and she needed a break. This meant we needed to go home and sleep in a sixty-degree house or find another place to sleep.

That’s when our next blessing came.

While the kids and I were still at my grandma’s, my aunt on my dad’s side went to our house, picked up the kids’ gifts, and snuck them over to their house after inviting us to stay there Christmas Eve.

A couple of days after Christmas, the power came back on and we went home after spending another couple of nights at my grandma’s. To this day, it is the most terrifying and most blessed Christmas we’ve ever had because our who family saw how God’s hand was on us. He took something bad and turned it around for good, giving us a memory we will talk about for years.

2 July 2017

If you’ve been following the blog this past week, you’ve seen a part of me not easily revealed. Wednesday in particular I made myself very vulnerable and blogged about my greatest embarrassment—my house, and The Great Clean Up.

Monday as I was going through yet another of those myriad boxes (why? just why???) I came across a keeper, a prayer I wrote in the form of a letter fifteen years ago. I share that with you today.

(Though I no longer have the original letter and the digital image is hard to read, I give you this small bit)

I lost track of how many times I pleaded for Father to “show me, guide me, direct me.” I was trying so hard, making it more difficult than He ever intended it to be. What I didn’t realize at the time, He was guiding me, wooing me, leading out of the dark of depression and guilt and “works” that Paul talks about. I was asking—begging, pleading—for Him to do what He has and is doing. Rest, He says, rest.

Nowhere does He ever tell us to strive. Not to do His will, and certainly not to abide in Him. Rest, just rest.

As I’ve come to know Him—in the same way I get to know new friends—abiding in Him comes naturally, no striving, no dues to pay. It just is. Like a seed that produces its fruit or blossom, it’s what it does. I water it, prune it, give it the attention it needs, but I don’t strive to make it do what it is intended to do.

So it is with my relationship with God. And with that, my identity and purpose. Is it easy? Yes and no. In the face of all hell coming against me, yeah, there’s a struggle. But abiding in Him? Resting in Him? Nah, no struggle at all. Rather like a spiritual hammock on a mild spring evening, gentle breeze, birdsong above.

Rest in Him, my friend. Find your place in Him, in His heart, in the palm of His hand. Rest. And be.
