For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (NKJV) Romans 8:2-4

IRISH / GAEILGE

Oir rinne dlí Spiorad na beatha i gCríost Íosa mé saor ó dhlí an pheaca agus an bháis. Óir an ní nárbh fhéidir leis an dlí do dhéanamh sa mhéid go raibh sé lag tríd an bhfeoil, do rinne Dia tré a Mhac féin do chur ar chosmhail na feola peacach, ar son an pheacaidh: Cháin sé an peacadh san fheoil, go bhféadfadh riachtanas fíréanta an dlighe. bígí comhlíonta ionainn nach siúlann de réir na feola ach de réir an Spioraid. (NKJV) Rómhánaigh 8:2-4

SWAHILI / KISWAHILI

(NKJV) Warumi 8:2-4

GERMAN / DEUTSCH

(NTV) Romanos 8:2-4

CHAT THURSDAY – HEATHER DAY GILBERT

Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Heather Gilbert.

FAST FAVES

Twitter or Facebook: So hard! But I think I have more one-on-one interaction on Facebook.

Coffee or tea: COFFEE! But I just discovered that green tea is a nice after-lunch pick-me-up.

Dogs or cats: Dogs! (Thus the Barks & Beans Cafe!)

rem: touché!

Call or text: Text, most of the time.

Kindle or print: Print for books I want to keep, Kindle for new authors/books I want from library or KU.

Hugs or kisses: Hugs! (but kisses for my hubby lol)

rem:  Welcome Heather. Tell us three random things about yourself.

HEATHER:  1) I once had a tarantula walk along my hand/arm. I’m not really afraid of spiders.

2) I was a huge Madeline L’Engle reader as a teen, and of course Agatha Christie was another fave author.  rem: two of my all-time favs also!

3) I have two brothers, so I love writing brother/sister relationships (again like Barks & Beans Cafe!).

rem:  What is your favorite quotation and why?

HEATHER:  This is an incredibly hard question! I’m fond of Margaret Thatcher quotes (she was apparently an ENTJ like I am on Myers-Briggs). She said, “To wear your heart on your sleeve isn’t a very good plan; you should wear it inside, where it functions best,” and I do like that one.

rem:  What do you do as a hobby?

HEATHER:  I do some flower gardening (perennials), and I play video games. I also read or binge-watch mystery shows on TV in my downtime.

rem:  I, too, love flower gardening. In fact I just came in from planting a few seedlings. What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

HEATHER:  Realistically speaking, I’d probably be standing around trying to come up with what to make for supper. Happens every night! LOL!

rem:  LOL! If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

HEATHER:  The Viking era. I’d love to meet Gudrid and Freydis, the explorer Viking women I wrote about in my Vikings of the New World Saga.

rem:  Well, yeah, that’s an obvious for you. What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

HEATHER:  I’ve been in Christian fiction circles for over a decade now. It’s wonderful the way many authors will help each other by sharing publishing/writing information, and how readers and authors pray for one another. While I also write mainstream clean fiction, the Christian fiction genre can touch on things more personal to my faith.

And being a novelist…well, to be honest, it’s had some serious ups and some serious downs, but it’s definitely made me lean on Christ and learn to recognize His nudges to change course (or to accept His closed doors).

rem:  I have to agree about the connectivity among Christian authors—it’s a wonderful “place” to be. When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

HEATHER:  Great question! Sometimes I’ll start a book and then it’ll fizzle out for me, and I have so many books on my To-Read, I’ll just move on along to something I can give a good review—because I know good reviews are so encouraging to authors! But what often makes a story for me is a strong female lead character going through realistic difficulties and overcoming them, or a very twisty book where I can’t guess what’ll happen next (tricky because I grew up reading/watching so many mysteries!). Oh—and first person POV will often hook me right in—I love it for some reason! What can “break” a book for me is an unwieldy or confusing writing style or characters I don’t really relate to.

rem:  It is tough to stay with a story that’s flat. What are you reading right now?

HEATHER:  A NetGalley copy of Charles Martin’s The Last Exchange and Susie Finkbeiner’s The All-American.

rem:  Tell us a little about your writing journey.

HEATHER:  How much time do you have!? LOL! Like I said, I’ve been at this over a decade now, and the industry has certainly shifted all over the place during that time. I’ve had five agents, I’ve had four traditionally published books, and my other eighteen books were independently published.

I thought my first published book would be embraced by all (God’s Daughter). It turned out, Viking historical Christian fiction is VERY niche and it’s tricky to find readers for it, but I’ve had some surprisingly nice recognition of it through the years (most recently, I was interviewed on an Amazon Prime documentary, Templars (Episode 4, “Gudrid the Fair,”), along with some other heavy-hitting historical authors about my main character in the book. It was a lovely honor.   rem: And well deserved! God’s Daughter, and its companion book,  Forest Child (Vikings of the New World Saga), are fantastic books! I learned so much when I read them.

But mostly I’m pursuing contemporary mystery/suspense, since I grew up reading Agatha and contemp mysteries are what she was writing then. 🙂 It’s a great fit for me.

rem:  It’s a great fit for your readers, too. What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

HEATHER:  I like setting my own schedule and figuring out ways to get better at my author/publisher business. I also love hearing from readers!

rem:  Cheers to that! What genre(s) do you write and why?

HEATHER:  I write contemporary mystery/suspense because I’ve always loved reading those genres, and I write Viking historical fiction because I’m a real Viking-era geek! 😉

rem:  Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

HEATHER:  My upcoming release (June 26) is book 2 in the Tavland Vikings series I co-authored with Jen Cudmore, To Calm a Storm. After that, I’ll be focusing on mystery/suspense books for a while, though I have another special project I’m working on next year.

jocelyn quote amazon

rem:  Oooohhh…. Even in interview you leave readers wanting more! What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

HEATHER:  Jen and I have put many hours of work into this story, which is so riveting! I feel this series is quite adventurous and romantic, although it tackles some deeper themes. It’ll give readers a good feel for the Viking era and for what it might’ve been like for Christian Vikings operating in a largely pagan world.

rem:  I can’t even imagine! So much we take for granted now. (Even in this current climate.) What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

HEATHER:  How to build marriages that will stand the test of time. We portray both good and bad marriages in this series (book 1, To Love a Viking, delves into domestic abuse), and hopefully offer realistic ways to deal with things in healthy ways.

rem:  GURL! I love seeing reality in fiction! One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

HEATHER: I try to focus on different verses each week, but some of my favorite verses are Psalm 73: 25-26. “Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee. My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.”

rem:  Such a great verse to cling to. Anything you’d like to add?

HEATHER:  Just that I love how supportive you are of other authors, and of my books in particular! You are such an encourager, and I wish you all the best with your own writing! 🙂

rem:  D’awww, thanks. And thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!

As Dr. Lydia Bradshaw makes her rounds in the village of Good Springs this Christmas season, each family she visits seems to be blessed in ways she is not. All the homes are beautifully decorated for the holiday, and every woman is expecting another baby.
Every woman but her, that is.
While the haze from the volcanic ash cloud outside the Land looms on the horizon, calls for the doctor force Lydia to work around the clock. Torn between fighting for the home life she craves and the career that defines her, Lydia needs a Christmas miracle.

Meanwhile, at Falls Creek…
Philip Roberts spends his lonely nights in the parsonage next to the humble chapel. Pastoring the church across from the Land’s only inn means encouraging many a road-worn traveler to carry on, whatever their journey might be. Philip also watches the ever-changing rotation of guests for the one person he prays will stay at Falls Creek forever.
Only he doesn’t know her name.
When the Vestal siblings break their journey to Good Springs at the inn for a much needed respite over Christmas, Philip is fascinated with the demure Lena Vestal. As he tries to get to know her, she stirs in him more questions than answers.

Can he discover who this intriguing woman truly is in such a short time, and is she the one he’s been waiting for?

This Christmas novella weaves past and future in a faith-filled story of life in a hidden land. If you enjoy the rural setting and wholesomeness of frontier romance and Amish fiction, you’ll adore Uncharted Christmas.

THE FIRST LINE

Dr. Lydia Bradshaw refused to believe the rumor predicting it would snow on Christmas Day.

THE BLURB

Can two newcomers with shattered pasts and buried secrets find love in the village of Good Springs?
An inherited orchard offers a fresh start in a new village for social butterfly Caroline Vestal. She believes Good Springs is where she will finally find a soulmate, but building a genuine relationship means being honest—even with the family secret that could ruin her new life before it begins.
With his relaxed manner, professional expertise, and dapper appearance, physician Jedidiah Cotter makes a good first impression in his new village. Once the Good Springs elder council officially titles him, he can establish his career and be safe from the obligation to return to his crooked family’s business back home. But when the council unexpectedly stalls the process, Jedidiah must discover the cause and quickly find a cure.
Though Caroline is smitten with the dashing new physician who lives across the road from the orchard house, his attraction to her drives him to ask questions she isn’t prepared to answer. If she trusts the wrong person with the shocking truth about her family’s past, she could lose the inheritance and the man she loves.

Uncharted Grace weaves past and future in a faith-filled story of life in a hidden land. If you enjoy the rural setting of frontier romance and the wholesomeness of Amish fiction, you’ll adore Uncharted Grace.

THE FIRST LINE

The azure sky spread above the thriving orchard like an unending wealth of promises only Caroline could see.

CHAT THURSDAY – MICHELLE GRIEP

Please give a warm feathered welcome to author and friend, Michelle Griep.

FAST FAVES:

Twitter or Facebook – Facebook

Coffee or tea – Coffee

Dogs or cats – Dogs

Call or text – Text

Kindle or print – Print

Hugs or kisses – Hugs

rem:  Tell us three random things about yourself.

MICHELLE:  centipedes make me scream, dark chocolate over milk, I make my own kombucha

rem:  Yeah, centipedes are rather creepy – crawly…! Totally agree with dark chocolate but EWWW to kombucha. LOL What genre(s) do you write and why?

MICHELLE: I mostly write historical, though I snuck in one contemporary with a friend, and my tales always include a healthy dose of romance, mystery, and action/adventure. I write what I love, and what I love is a story that keeps everyone guessing (me too), deals with tough issues, and ultimately shares biblical truth without beating the reader black and blue with a big fat Bible.

rem:  Well your stories definitely keep the reader guessing. What is your favorite quotation and why?

MICHELLE:  “Bidden or unbidden, God is always present.” What a great reminder for all of us, eh?

rem:  LOVE that!! What do you do as a hobby?

MICHELLE:  Love to garden and of late I am a crazy chicken lady.

rem:  Ditto to gardening but I (have to) draw the line on chickens. What would you be doing if you weren’t writing?

MICHELLE:  If I have the funds, I’d be skipping across the ponds. Most likely, though, I’m hitting up the antique stores.

rem:  Take me with you! Across the pond or to antique stores. If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

MICHELLE:  Sometimes I think I’d love to go back to the time of Jesus, just to catch a glimpse of him. But really would that help or hinder my faith? I dunno, so instead of taking the chance, I’d swing back to the Victorian era. Everyone just dressed so much nicer then!

rem:  Interesting question about helping or hindering your faith. I never thought about that. What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a novelist impacted your relationship with Christ?

MICHELLE:  Christian fiction is filled with hope—a HUGE difference from secular reads. I work out my faith through story, so whatever faith journey my heroine takes is usually what I’m dealing with at the time.

rem:  Ah, so the inner Michelle comes out… When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

MICHELLE:  I am a jaded reader, so I’m really hard to please. Overuse of adjectives is one. Spilling too much backstory in one big dump is another. Dull dialogue and/or plot.

rem:  Dialogue is my number one – and you’re aces with yours. Especially sprinkling vernacular of the era in as you do. What are you reading right now?

MICHELLE:  Currently reading The Metropolitan Affair by Jocelyn Green.

rem:  Sounds intriguing. Tell us a little about your writing journey.

MICHELLE:  I’ve been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. Professionally, though, since the early 2000’s. I was homeschooling my four kids and I needed a break, so my husband gave me every Thursday night to go out and do whatever I wanted. Of course I ran to the library. I read at first, until I got cocky and thought I could write a book. How hard could it be? Turns out it was really hard. But I loved the process and stuck with it.

rem:  “How hard could it be?” BWAHAHAHAHAH What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

MICHELLE:  The readers. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating…I have the best readers in the universe!

rem:  Why thank you. #curtsies Tell us a little about your latest book? What is your current project?

MICHELLE:  I just handed in the third and final book in the Blackfriars series. The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane continues the adventures of Jackson and Kit. Here’s a blurb:

Kit is more than just a wife and mother. As co-owner of The Blackfriars Lane Enquiry Agency, she fearlessly takes on a missing child case, only to find herself and her husband, Chief Inspector Jackson Forge, risking everything to save their own baby from the dangerous criminals involved.

rem:  I can’t wait to read Kit and Jackson’s latest caper. What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

MICHELLE:  I love the push and pull in Jackson and Kit’s relationship. It’s not easy figuring out your place in this world and that’s exactly what Kit is trying to do. Though this is a historical, I think that issue will resonate with every reader.

rem:  In that era, it was especially hard for a woman to figure out her place when she’s her own person. What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

MICHELLE:  Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should do it.

rem:  Touché! One more and then we’ll close. Do you have a life Scripture?

MICHELLE: Yep! “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him.” Nahum 1:7

rem:  Beautiful verse. Anything you’d like to add?

MICHELLE:  Readers, you’re the ones who make this whole writing gig possible, so a huge shoutout to readers everywhere!

rem:  Gurl, your readers love you. Thank you so much for chatting with us on my blog today!
