💿 Pink Floyd is an English rock band that was formed around 1964 or 65 in London, England. They are one of the first groups known for psychedelic or progressive rock, especially through their experimental composition. The original bandmembers included Roger “Syd” Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Rick Wright on keyboards, and Roger Waters on bass. The early years had a rotation of various other members and names, including the name Tea Set, Eventually the band was named after two of Barrett’s favorite blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood 02.13.24💿 In the early years, the group was a big part of the London underground music scene and were one of the first bands to include a light show for performances. They signed their first recording contract in 1967. Their first singles were “See Emily Play” and “Arnold Layne,” the latter being about cross-dressing and drawing a lot of controversy. Their first album was The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and they continued to do shows; however, Barrett had become increasing erratic. He was regularly using LSD and having breakdowns, causing the band to cancel shows and appearances. As a result, the band added David Gilmour as a fifth member, playing guitar. Barrett was relegated to solely writing songs, eventually being pushed out of the band.

They also embarked on their first major tour and released the single “Point Me at the Sky,” which would be their last single until 1973. Between 1969 and 1972, they released 5 more albums including Ummagumma and Obscured by Clouds . Their next album, Dark Side of the Moon was released in March of 1973 and is one of the most commercially successful rock albums of all time.

💿 Pink Floyd struggled with their next album as they were physically and emotionally drained from the success of Dark Side of the Moon. Their next album was Wish You Were Here, which was partially inspired by Barrett and the songs were a summary of the rise and fall of their former bandmate. The following album, Animals, was a concept album loosely based on George Orwell’s pollical fable, Animal Farm. In July of 1978, Waters presented two ideas for the next album. The first was a 90 minute demo with the working title Bricks in the Wall and the other idea would later become Water’s first solo album. The band went with the first idea, which was a story of a character transforming and growing over the course of several songs. The album, officially called The Wall, also had their first single since “Money,” which was “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II).” The album was a commercial success.

💿 The 1980s brought many changes for the band. The album, The Final Cut, was released in 1983. Following that, band members started working on independent and solo endeavors. Disagreements regarding the band led to legal issues. In the mid 2000s, Barrett and Wright passed away. Various members picked up musical projects under the name of Pink Floyd over the years, but all four members never played together after the early 1980s. Pink Floyd is considered one of the most commercially successful and influential rock bands of all time. Known for being experimental and eccentric, they have composed several film scores, won numerous awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Between 1969 and 1972, they released 5 more albums including Ummagumma and Obscured by Clouds .

Disagreements regarding the band led to legal issues. In the mid 2000s, Barrett and Wright passed away. Various members picked up musical projects under the name of Pink Floyd over the years, but all four members never played together after the early 1980s.

Disagreements regarding the band led to legal issues. In the mid 2000s, Barrett and Wright passed away. Various members picked up musical projects under the name of Pink Floyd over the years, but all four members never played together after the early 1980s.
