❉⊰Gayle⊱❉ (ziastar) | 67 comments Finished listening to the audiobook The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey . Excellent. I would recommend.

message 656: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments It sounds so wonderful, Gayle. I'm definitely recommending it to my mom. She loves audiobooks and she loves books and movies with sad endings. She hates HEA!! I think I was adopted!!

message 657: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I am desperately trying to finish up my last two books for this month. I had to ditch another book because it was just not well written. Yuck. Oh well. But life is getting in the way of me reading today. But the two I'm reading are Claimed By Shadow (Cassandra Palmer, #2) by Karen Chance and Until Proven Guilty (J.P. Beaumont, #1) by J.A. Jance .

Very different books!

message 658: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Attention Please!!

Hi Everyone!

Since the mini-challenges were a hoot, we've decided to expand the party! So for each month, there will be a theme running for most of it. Just read a book that fits the rules for that month and you're done. But don't worry - there will still be mini-challenges running too without any change. To spice things up a bit, we have devised a point system.

1. Each book you read for the monthly or mini-challenge will get one point.
2. If it meets both the monthly and the on-going mini-challenge requirement, then the book will get TWO points.

We will keep records of the books and the totals will be posted at the end of the challenge period. The winner will get to decide the next month's challenge.

Note: Winners of the mini-challenge will decide the next mini-challenge. There is no change to this.

FEBRUARY MONTHLY CHALLENGE

WHEN: February 1 - February 24
WHAT: In honour of Valentine's Day, for the month of February, read Romance books
RULES:
1. The book should be shelved as romance by at least 10 people. To check this, go to the book page. In the right-hand side, there will be a section called Genres. Just click on it and it will show up all the shelves for this book. For an image, click the spoiler. (view spoiler)
2. Book should be read between Feb 1 and 24 and meet the Tower Team Challenge requirements i.e page count >170
3. Participants in this month-long challenge, please post the book in the thread. If it ties in with any mini-challenge, it has to be stated explicitly. (It makes work easier for us mods)

Happy Reading!

message 660: by Marla (new)

Marla | 1803 comments Finished Sherlock A Study in Scarlet (Sherlock Holmes, #1) by Arthur Conan Doyle yesterday, too late for a red book.

I'm just cursed, I'm not really loving new books I've picked up, after finishing 2 other so-so and 1 decent book. Sigh.

But I've got some good ones just in from the library, so I've gotta slog through and finish a couple in progress to get to the good stuff. Just keep swimming reading...Go Team, over 500!

message 661: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I hope you find some better books, Marla!! Life's too short to waste time on bad books!!

Great job on posting the February Challenge, Vi!!! I'm so excited and have all my Romance books lined up!!

Thanks for the sympathy, Leslie! Unfortunately, I am fanatical about finishing every book I start, so I try to have a good mix of quick reads and slower reads going at the same time. Unfortunately, I've been doing a poor job at choosing my fun, quick reads.

message 663: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Marla, I used to be the same way until I saw a quote on a Starbucks Cup about reading to a certain page number based on your age. In doing a quick google search, it appears to have been written by Nancy Pearl - here's her thoughts on the matter:

Nancy Pearl's Rule of 50 for dropping a bad book

I've realized that there are always more books out there to move onto. The only rule where I have to finish is if I've spent money on it. Hope you enjoyed the article!

I LOVED the article Rebecca!!! Thanks. I don't know if I can do it, but I will consider it. And I do like the rule of 50, except it seems to me that longer 1st books usually need 100 pages to hit their stride. I hesitate to read books that I'm wary of due to content or length, but this would free me from the commitment. Hmmm...it definitely gives me something to ponder!

message 665: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments I am so glad you liked the article! When I know that people are struggling with a book I tell them about that rule and then promptly list a few of the good books I've read recently. Let me know how successful you are!

And for those longer books, I'll allow you to reach 100 pages but not 101 :)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Had a big pickup at the library this week. Up next:

The Husband List by Janet Evanovich Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan And Then You Dye (A Needlecraft Mystery, #16) by Monica Ferris Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple Second Chance (The Slayer Chronicles, #2) by Heather Brewer Sealed with a Curse (Weird Girls, #1) by Cecy Robson The Runaway Princess by Hester Browne

The Husband List is really outside my normal genre but I'm willing to give it a try.

You know - seeing all the covers here makes me glad I have a 3 week check out at my library :)

message 668: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments @Gayle - I got this a while ago for my nook on one of their Free Fridays. I've heard such good things about this author but never got around to reading it. It's good!

@Rebecca - great lineup of books!! I love 3 week checkouts! And Janet Evanovich is always good for a chuckle. And the one about introverts sounds really interesting.

I just finished: Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu and picked up: Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1) by Isaac Marion

message 674: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Welcome to the group Anna!!

message 675: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments @Gayle - I absolutely love Nalini Singh. I just completed her Psy-Changeling series and it was amazing!! I am on the 3rd one of this series. This one is a little more UF.

Welcome, Anna!! Happy to have you as part of our group. Everyone seems to be reading Warm Bodies!

I have just started two books: Mariana by Susanna Kearsley and The Sonnet Lover by Carol Goodman The first one is by an author that I love! She writes very lyrical books that are sort of time travelish. And the other is a new author for me and was recommended by a friend.

And I finished Until Proven Guilty (J.P. Beaumont, #1) by J.A. Jance Claimed By Shadow (Cassandra Palmer, #2) by Karen Chance and Web of Lies (Elemental Assassin, #2) by Jennifer Estep

message 676: by Anna (new)

Anna | 43 comments I just finished The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer it was actually better than i expected. So anyone who likes YA books should read this one too :)

I'm currently reading Life, the Universe and Everything (Hitchhiker's Guide, #3) by Douglas Adams , Fire (Graceling Realm, #2) by Kristin Cashore , A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin and The Strain (The Strain Trilogy, #1) by Guillermo del Toro I usually read a lot of books at the same time :P All of them are really good (so far) so i highly recommend them :)

Gen (gen454) | 179 comments I finished Blood Red Road and I gave it 4 stars. The story was great even if sometimes I felt like the book became an RPG game like Zelda or Mario, in a battle came the minions first and then the big boss. The thing I disliked the most was the writing, and I did not care a lot for the characters.

I will now begin Stormbreaker (Alex Rider, #1) by Anthony Horowitz .

message 684: by Deedee (last edited Feb 01, 2013 06:38PM) (new)

Deedee | 626 comments Hi all -- currently reading Trapeze by Simon Mawer , which is an espionage novel, not a romance (much to my surprise) but still a quick read ....

and I've just started The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters (Miss Temple, Doctor Svenson, and Cardinal Chang, #1) by Gordon Dahlquist , a book I've been picking up and putting down for a couple of years now. It's 760 pages, and I'm on page 12. So far I like: the title; the setting (1890s London); and the way the story begins with action.

I'm one of the ones who read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan ; it's ok but I wasn't impressed. I really liked Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson and would recommend it (over 10 shelved it as romance, a plus!). I read The Seduction of Water by Carol Goodman in 2011 and thought well of it so I added the rest of Carol Goodman's books to my TBR list.

Thanks Rebecca for posting the book frequency list ... I've read several of those books before January 1st, and a couple in January.

message 685: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Thanks Deedee! Carol Goodman is one of my favorite authors. I'm a little behind in her books but I make sure to pick them up whenever I see them.

message 686: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 626 comments I've gotten better about tossing unsuccessful books. I must have heard about the 50 page rule on NPR years ago because that's what I do, although sometimes books don't even make it that far. I've found that I feel more willing to take a chance on new genres and new to me authors if I know that I'm only committing myself to 50 pages if I've chosen a dud.

message 687: by Deedee (last edited Feb 01, 2013 07:00PM) (new)

Deedee | 626 comments Re-reads: I rarely do re-reads.

That said, I do occasionally re-read books. Here's a list of the ones I've re-read:
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy The Time Machine An Invention by H.G. Wells A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1) by Frank Herbert
And ones on my to-be-reread list:
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Ilium (Ilium, #1) by Dan Simmons Brave New World by Aldous Huxley The Grand Ellipse by Paula Volsky The High Crusade by Poul Anderson The Word for World Is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin The Alchemist's Apprentice (The Alchemist, #1) by Dave Duncan

message 688: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Loved the stats for the group with all the covers, Rebecca!! Great work.
And this is my first time reading Carol Goodman but I really like the book so far.

@Deedee - I actually love re-reads. I don't remember all the little details and I love revisiting characters I love. I have several personal challenges and buddy read challenges going on that involve re-reading a series in order. Because the first time around I often read a series out of order.

Okay, team. Who is going to be reading some great romance novels that I can add to my already groaning TBR!!! I'm so excited!!

message 689: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 626 comments And, speaking of tossers, good-bye to The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters (Miss Temple, Doctor Svenson, and Cardinal Chang, #1) by Gordon Dahlquist . I found myself unwilling to suspend disbelief to the extent required to continue this novel. Ah, well, I'll start another one tomorrow.

message 690: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments We need to have a toss pile for this group! I'm still working on the two I started yesterday. Both are very good!

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 115 comments I've had computer issues this week. :( I haven't been able to get online, so I need to update my bookshelf with the books I've read this week. It's not as fun keeping track of my books without Goodreads! I'm sorry I missed Marguerite's mini-challenge. I have a lot of red covers, too. Oh, well. The February challenge sounds great! Most of my TBR shelf is romance!

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Finished two books that are shelved as Romance: The Sonnet Lover by Carol Goodman and Mariana by Susanna Kearsley

The first one is first time author for me. Loved the writing and the story was certainly intriguing. But in the end, it left me flat as I didn't like the characters. The second one was beautiful and sweet. I love this author!
At the moment I'm reading an older romance for a challenge Outlaw Derek by Kay Hooper and then I'll be starting Working Stiff (Revivalist, #1) by Rachel Caine which is a new series by an author that I love.
