Reese May we list works that have more than one narrator?

message 2: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Sure!

message 3: by Reese (new)

Reese Thanks, Ruby.

Thom Dunn FOOTNOTES: The Canterbury Tales "Geoffrey" is not Chaucer but a humble ordinary man who marvels in innocence at the people he meets, and he frames the entire journey.

Amadeus: The stageplay, NOT the movie: In the play, Salieri tells us his story in flashback, he is both Narrator and Protagonist. Mozart is a central character but is set in the background of memory.

Our Town: No "Stage Manager", no story.

Glass Menagerie: Is a play set in Tom Wingfield's memory. His epilogue renders both him and his sister Laura as siblings locked in a poignant family tragedy.

Henry V: The "Prologue" sets the play in the past, focusses our attention on King Henry , and interpolates throughout calling upon us to "deck out" the 'little wooden O' and the 'unworthy scaffold' with our imaginations.

Reese T,
After I read the notes about your additions to the "unique narrators" list, I decided not to stifle my urge to share one of the many "great" moments in the history of my daughter's secondary school education.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

V. BELL (female, middle-aged teacher whose ignorance and inarticulateness are "off the charts")

THIRTY TEENAGERS (males & females, all experiencing a mixture of exam anxiety and relief since today is the last time that one of V. Bell's topics can cause them to get "farklempt")

NARRATOR

SETTING (1997, a high school on NEWSWEEK's list of top 100 public high schools, an eleventh-grade AP English class)
Scene 1

As the curtain rises, V. Bell is distributing copies of the final exam. In unison, the students turn over a sheet of paper now on each desk and begin to read the prompt. Responses include nervous laughter, tears, deer-in-the-headlights looks, shoulder shrugging. No one picks up a pencil. A few minutes pass. The students are shuffling blank sheets of paper and rolling their eyeballs until one student rises and approaches the teacher's desk.

BRAVE STUDENT. Dr. Bell, you're asking us to discuss the role of the narrator in ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN, THE GREAT GATSBY, and DEATH OF A SALESMAN ???
V. BELL. Yes, that IS the assignment.
BRAVE STUDENT. Excuse me, but (pause) Dr. Bell, uhm, uhm, DEATH OF A SALESMAN doesn't have a narrator.
V. BELL. Really?
BRAVE STUDENT. Uh, how can we handle this topic? I mean -- how can we discuss DEATH OF A SALESMAN?
V. BELL. (She contemptuously stares at the student before she speaks.) You DISCUSS how the book would be different IF IT HAD A NARRATOR!

Scene 2

(One year has passed)

NARRATOR. Today teachers from across the
county gathered to honor the county's
TEACHER OF THE YEAR,Dr. V. Bell.

And they say we'll never catch up to the Japanese. With sophistry like Ms Bell's, how can we fail ?

message 8: by Reese (new)

Reese Before there was "No Child Left Behind," there was
"No Teacher Left Behind." Now we're a nation of behinds. What's a head?

Linguistics class, 1963, on the importance of suprasegmental phonemes:

What's that in the road ahead ?

What's that in the road, a head ??!

.....And BTW, We have a Congress full of Behinds, including at least one of the Heads. Go figure.

message 10: by Reese (new)

Reese What we have, T, is a meeting of the minds -- despite the fact that your head holds way more than mine.
Mr.(Dr.) Thom -- he "get" the high and the low.

I LOVED your message.

message 11: by Tiago (new)

Tiago Please add Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's pretty easy to add books to lists; at the top of the list, at the tab next to "all votes."
