Jennifer A. Nielson is a very good author for younger YA/older middle grade. I'd start with The False Prince, although her historical fiction books are also good.
The Lunar Chronicles is a good jumping-off place for YA, it does have romance but it stays pretty kid-friendly. Nothing beyond a few innuendos and some kissing, as far as I can remember.
I'd also recommend The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, along with Penny From Heaven and Turtle In Paradise, both by Jennifer L. Holm.

That series of books should not be recommended to anyone, let alone a 12 year old, due to all the damaging messages throughout.
I don't know about the others apart from The Kingdom which I have heard is an excellent book - although perhaps a little advanced in terms of themes depending on the maturity level of the 12-year-old.

The Selection is also very romance-heavy, I wouldn't recommend it to a person specifically asking for books without heavy romance themes.

Patricia C. Wrede has some great books that I read at her age, as I recall they were pretty romance-light but it has been a long time since I read them.
I would also recommend the Percy Jackson series (also very romance-lite), Code Name Verity, anything by Cornelia Funke, and the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce (much more romance-lite than her Tortall books, from my recollection.)

LOL, tbh to me Twilight always read like a Harlequin for younger readers. I'm following someone who is live-tweeting her read through of Midnight Sun and apparently it is even more ridiculous from Edward's POV, something I didn't really think was possible but I am at least enjoying her take on it.

It's not the romance element that I was referring to, rather how the romance plays out and all the other problematic content and themes of it.

I know, I just wanted to point out that Twilight wasn't the only overt romance on the list.
The fact that Twilight got a spinoff in 2020 is absolutely wild to me, why couldn't we have left that toxicity in the early 2010s?

Gotcha and agreed, but who knows as I'm sure the author didn't need the money.

Ooooh! Keeper of the Lost Cities, Fablehaven, The Unwanteds, Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, many more, but those are my favorites!
(Forgot to put I was replying to you the first time, oops!)

So - recommend some American Indian YA Novels published this year, to correct GR's miss.

Same! I agree too it's not a great story, very problematic handling of relationships, etc, ESPECIALLY for the age group it's aimed at. It boggles my mind that Smeyer thinks it's necessary for there to be a 2020 redux. Don't we have enough going on?

Have your tried Robin Stevens' mysteries?

That sounds like something I would enjoy. Thx for mentioning it.

The Whispers.
The Selection (it's a teen/YA dystopian romance)
The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg
Twilight"
Where's the Asian and Indian representation? You shouldn't be criticising others' lists when you yourself can't do any better.

Same!!

Here is a book list I put together because of lots of requests from moms in a group I am in on Facebook. Plenty here to please a 12-yo.

I thought The Raven Cycle was great, the premise sounds cliched and the charecters sound like tropes, but are actually reversed, and they are actually complex and realistic people.

I love most of the books you just listed! With my own add ons like Harry Potter, Twilight, and Percy Jackson!

OT, but Your thumbnail is fab!

Me too! It's been such a journey with this series.

Same. Like every damn time!
