Sashana wrote: "Yes and yes! Welcome to the challenge, Catherine!"do I have a certain time for each animal?
I know I have a month for each...but if I start now...will I have to start the next one on 1 Feb, or can I start on 14th?
The original A Sign of Time Challenge was a very big hit in our group last year. Lisarenee and I wanted to give members a new challenge that was somewhat similar to the original, yet completely different and ‘spicy’. Because the Chinese Zodiac is divided into twelve years instead of twelve months, we had to get a bit creative. Members are free to participate in one or both sign of times challenges if they are up to the challenge. ;) This challenge will last for a year.What is the Chinese Zodiac?
Unlike regular zodiac, the Chinese Zodiac Astrology circulates in the span of twelve years instead of twelve months. Each year is represented by an animal and each animal represents certain personalities. The animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
Please note that because the Chinese Zodiac is measured in the span of 12 years (and not twelve months) we will be assigning each animal to a specific month. Since the rat appears first on the Chinese calendar, it will be assigned the month of January; the Buffalo appears second so it will be assigned to the month of February and so on… Also, all information was gathered from http://www.chinesezodiac.com/index.php and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_zod...
Here the animals and a little bit about him
The Rules
First, determine which animal you are; this can be done by looking at the images above. That is the animal you'll start with (whenever you start the challenge). Then each month thereafter use the next animal that comes after their particular animal.You read the letters of the animal associated with the month you're currently reading in. The letter must correspond to the first letter of a title, the first letter of an author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first or last name from the book. Just let us know what the link to the letter is if it's not obvious. You may ignore the 'A', 'An', 'The', etc. at the beginning of titles to get to the first significant word. So "The Virgin's Secret" would be a 'V' title and "A Highlander Christmas" would be an 'H' title. (Thanks for the example BJ Rose) Once you get through all the animals you may start over again and read different books or re-read books you've read before. Each challenge will follow a different pattern because (almost) everyone will have a different animal. For example; Lisarenee’s, who happens to be a monkey, challenge would look like this:
January = Monkey
February = Rooster
March = Dog
April = Pig
May = Rat
June = Ox
July = Tiger
August = Rabbit
September = Dragon
October = Snake
November = Horse
December = Sheep
The rules for five of the animals will be slightly different. Why you ask? Words like rat, sheep, dog, ox, and pig are way too easy, so we added a delicious twist. Not only will you be reading the animals, you will also have to pick a word from the personality list to accompany the animal. So instead of reading the word R A T you will be adding an adjective like the word wise and read W I S E R A T. REMEMBER! This rule only applies five animals: the rat, sheep, dog, pig, and ox. For every other month, please simply read the animal i.e. M O N K E Y or R O O S T E R etc…
Personality Word List
All words from the list below was taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_zod...
Rat: wise, venal, honest, tense, aggressive, forthright, tenacious, intense, meticulous, charismatic, sensitive, intellectual, industrious, charming, eloquent, sociable, artistic, shrewd, manipulative, vindictive, self-destructive, envious, mendacious, venal, obstinate, critical, over-ambitious, ruthless, intolerant, and scheming.
Sheep: righteous, sincere, sympathetic, mild-mannered, shy, artistic, creative, gentle, compassionate, understanding, mothering, peaceful, generous, seeks security, moody, indecisive, over-passive, worrier, pessimistic, over-sensitive, complainer, weak-willed.
Dog: honest, intelligent, straightforward, loyal, sense of justice and fair play, attractive, amicable, unpretentious, sociable, open-minded, idealistic, moralistic, practical, affectionate, sensitive, cynical, lazy, cold, judgmental, pessimistic, worrier, stubborn, quarrelsome.
Pig: honest, gallant, sturdy, sociable, peace-loving, patient, loyal, hard-working, trusting, sincere, calm, understanding, thoughtful, scrupulous, passionate, intelligent, naïve, over-reliant, self-indulgent, gullible, fatalistic, materialistic.
Ox: dependable, ambitious, calm, methodical, born leader, patient, hardworking, conventional, steady, modest, logical, resolute, tenacious, stubborn, dogmatic, hot-tempered, narrow-minded, materialistic, rigid, demanding.
I did this as point of reference for myself...I will start in Feb! :) I addthe personality stuff when I get to each month that requires it :)..OK....need to say..have not started yet shame on me! I think I will start in April instead, if that's ok :)
