In this short excerpt from his book about algebra (see the note from the author below), the guy behind the popular Math Dude's Quick and Dirty Tips podcast, Jason Marshall, shows readers in just a few pages how easy and elegant math can be. In other words, he shows them Why Math Isn't an Awful Nerd! The e-book uses the example of perfect squares and the patterns they make ( they're called perfect squares for a reason) to clearly and concisely show some of the magic behind how numbers work. You'll also find lots of games, puzzles, and even a secret-agent "math-lib" to re-enforce the ideas. And if this e-book leaves you wanting even more! more! more! math, be sure to check out The Math Dude's Quick and Dirty Guide to Algebra for even more fun math games, puzzles, and explanations of the concepts that are sure to help you finally understand algebra. That's right, this e-book is part of a much larger book about algebra. So, if you enjoy the style of this e-book and are convinced that math isn't an awful nerd, check out the The Math Dude's Quick and Dirty Guide to Algebra for more.
I'm not entirely sure what's worse- the fact that this book only solved one real problem (after a tedious discussion about what it means for a number to be positive or negative and even or odd), or that it, a book championing itself as a book about algebra, didn't even solve this problem algebraically.
I saw this on the free eBook list, and being a math teacher, had to download it. I was little skeptical at first because the title isn't that great, but I really enjoyed reading this "math lesson". It was easy to understand and put in terms that kids could understand, though I highly doubt this would get any uninterested people interested in math.
Sort of humorous, and not very surprising for a middle school math teacher (sort of kills the "big reveal"). A fun topic to explore, though, especially if you don't already know what's coming.
