20.7 -- Christmas Fuzzies…or Not
I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. I hate the craziness, but I love spending time with my family. Ultimately, I decided that the love outweighed the hate, so I read a sad book I've been wanting to read for some time --
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
I can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to reading this book (although I think I've seen the movie, or parts of the movie, at some point)! It certainly had it's sad parts, but I really enjoyed it overall and I'm glad I finally picked it up.

The Mercy of Thin Air by Ronlyn Domingue
Ronlyn Domingue is a Goodreads Author
The main character, Razi, was an unconventional woman for her time in that she lived during the 1920's and was sexually active premaritally, passed out information on birth control, and was in the process of applying to medical school when she died. The book alternates between her life and the life of the young couple she "haunts", of whom the wife is another unconventional woman, although not as unusually so for present day.
Task 25.5 The SRC Tea Ceremony
For part A, I chose #2, Gunpowder Green Tea, and read...
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson
...in the category of True Crime. The book is a true accounting of serial killer H.H. Holmes during the Chicago World's Fair.
For part B, I read:

15.5 Land War in Asia
Home before morning: The story of an army nurse in Vietnam by Lynda Van Devanter
Tough to read, but I am so glad I did. The TV series China Beach was inspired by Lynda Van Devanter, but that was only half the story. She wrote of her experiences after she returned home with candor and poignancy.
20.2 Winter Flower- roses
Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts
I needed something light and carefree after a bunch of tough reads- Nora always delivers
20.7 Christmas Fuzzies...or not
Heartbroke Bay by Lynn D'urso
I like the holiday season, so I read a sad book. USA Today said Heartbroke Bay has an ending guaranteed to fire readers up — after they stop sobbing. This bleak book filled with greed and betrayal was an antidote for Christmas joy, but it was thought provoking. Sort of an uneven read- the beginning was awkward, the writing smoothed out in the middle and the conclusion was jarring, the last page+ was disappointing.
30.9 Happy 80th Birthday
A. 1930's book- 1936 (year of my mother's birth)
Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
B. mother's book
Forever, Erma: Best-Loved Writing from America's Favorite Humorist by Erma Bombeck
Mom always had an Erma column up on the fridge and she still prefers happy, light reading. She doesn't do negative- in reading or in life. Erma's writing is still so relevant- many of the columns written in the 60's still ring true. I laughed out loud and cried in alternating paragraphs.
