MARTINA'S OCTOBER LITERARY COLORS CHALLENGE UPDATE - 2/10In the wee hours of this morning I finished Shift (Shifters/Werecats, #5) by Rachel Vincent (★★★★★). This is a urban fantasy series about a group of shapeshifters (werecats) who shift into panthers/large cats. The series is centered around Faythe Sanders, a college-aged tabby (female werecat). Female werecats are extremely rare and are therefore very prized and protected by the males of the species. The werecats of this series have a rich social & political culture that shape many of the individual stories as well as the overall story arc.
In this particular book, Faythe's Pride is under attack by the thunderbirds, another type of vicious predatory bird shifter. Faythe's mission is to find out why the thunderbirds are under attack, make peace with them, protect the teenage tabby under her protection, and if that isn't enough, sort out her own feelings regarding the two toms who are both in love with her before they tear apart her Pride from within.
As usual, the story moves fast and the parts that you really want resolved stretch into the next book, but I really enjoyed Shift and will definitely be picking up the next (and final) book, Alpha, sometime soon.

: 4 starsThis was a surprisingly engaging, hot and (bitter)sweet historical m/m ménage. I loved the main character Munrow; an unapologetic, lazy, scheming bastard. Loved the humor, loved the hotness and love the glimpses of vulnerability and pure love (my full review).

: 3,5 starsThis was a slight disappointment, as I loved Covet so much. The book was entertaining but Ward could have done so much more with both the love story and the general plot and I felt like she took the easy way out and simplified something that could have had so much more depth. (my full review)

MARTINA'S OCTOBER LITERARY COLORS CHALLENGE UPDATE - 3/10Early yesterday morning I finished Witch Heart (Elemental Witches, #3) by Anya Bast (★★★). This book has been sitting on my shelf awhile mostly b/c I couldn't remember much from the previous two books in the series and was too lazy to go back and re-read them. Well, I shouldn't have worried that much about it. Yes, there's a series plot arc that I was a bit fuzzy on, but the books stands pretty well as an individual and some of the series plot came back to me as I read.
The series is PNR and this book focused on Claire, a witch who was mosty raised in the demon world until just recently when her master/father/owner/mentor's home was under attack - he pushed a large amount of power into her and then shoved her through a portal into Chicago - followed by two nasty demons out to get her.
Claire manages to hook up with the Chicago coven (which, of course features our characters from books 1 & 2) and is assigned Adam as a protector. Sparks fly between the two as they're pursued across the country by the evil demons.
Sounds trite, but I really enjoyed the chase and the action sequences of this book. It wasn't anything special and the ending wasn't even close to being a surprise, but it was a nice cozy read with some fairly hot (if somewhat repetitive) sex scenes.
