Christian is a fierce Welsh Crusader who's vowed to wait for his true love, Emma, forever. Eight hundred years later, he's still walking the earth as a spirit, thanks to a mangled magic spell. Now, three witches are determined to bring Emma's and Christian's souls together for all eternity. But if they fail, Christian and Emma's love will be lost forever...
Cindy Miles is the best-selling author of twelve novels, one anthology and three short stories. She also writes as Elle Jasper, and grew up on the salt marshes of the Vernon River in Savannah, Georgia.
While all her "ghost" books are stand-alones this book brings in a lot of characters from the other books (Into Thin Air, Spirited Away, Gawan's Ghost and Highland Knight) so I would recommend reading them all first. It's not required but you'll get a lot more out of the second half of the book where many of these characters are re-introduced and like others, I had a hard time keeping some of them straight as some of the books I'd read a while ago.
I could really feel the angst of Christian, which made the first part of the book really good. Emma didn't remember who she was so her emotions weren't nearly as strong - other Cindy Miles books, you really felt the equal angst. In some ways, I really enjoyed how they got to fall in love a different way this time (vs the prior 12 times) and that most of it was not physical. But I also felt like 95% of the book there isn't any real physical connection and for a romance that just seems a bit unbalanced for me. As in her other books, there is a pretty decent build up and then a pretty quick wrap-up. I don't want the book to drag but for all the buildup I wish the ending didn't feel so rushed.
But overall, I really enjoyed this book and kind of sad this is the last of her ghost books for me to read.
Christian is a Welsh Crusader is cursed for life, he has to live as a ghost for eternity, but he vowed to wait for his true love, Emma forever. Every seventy-two years his love’s soul was reborn and has been driven to return to Wales, to find Christian and remember their true love, hoping that they can break the curse that keeps his ghost earthbound. Twelve times he has gone through the reunion with his love, to lose here again to death.
Emma is a photographer and is drawn to the crumbling walls of Arrick by the Sea in Wales. So she takes a vacation and travels from America to Wales. She stays at the small Inn near the castle, which is run by the three lovely witch sisters. Her first night in Wales is weird; she meets a ghost who orders her to leave Wales at once and never come back. But Emma isn’t that scared and is determined to find out what these ghosts try to tell her.
Christian cannot go through it again and decides to stop convincing his love’s soul to find the cure and leave her alone. But this Emma is the spitting image of his first Emma and he cannot stay away from her long. The more he spends time with her, the more he’s convinced that this time it will be different. He gets help from the three witch sisters; they are determined to bring Emma and Christian’s souls together for eternity. If they fail this time, their love will be lost forever.
Thirteen chances by Cindy Miles is a fabulous read. Even though the previous books and this novel aren’t a series, the characters will come together in this one. It’s great to see the whole bunch together and share their experience.
The characters Emma & Christian have been through hell to find a way to break his curse, but loose every time. It’s hard to see Christian win over Emma’s heart every time to see him loose her in he end again. So it is understandable that this last time around he’s moving away from her instead of falling in love again. But of course fate and three determined witches are having plans of their own and to finally reunite those two lost souls for eternity.
I really enjoy the part where Christian takes Emma to meet his “old” friend from the past, sot it was nice to see the great characters of the previous books.
Cindy Miles never disappointed me with her books, so I definitely recommend the books if you are falling for immortal highlanders, some very independent women and last but not least some crazy but friendly ghosts. I cannot wait to see what Cindy Miles has in store for us in the future.
This book is very much like the ghostly characters it contains. There is very little substance, but that doesn’t take away from your enjoyment. I loved Christian’s character from reading “Into Thin Air” so I am glad that his story was just as good as the previous book was. My heart broke for him in the idea that when he is blessed to meet his soul mate again, he is forced to relive the scenario of Loving and Loosing, each time having it get harder to survive the loss. There is tragedy for Emma’s soul as well; in each lifetime she gets just a taste of being with her Intended before it is all ripped away in a life cut short and everything resets, including memories.
There is very little plot or character development beyond the idea that he’s a ghost, she’s a mortal, and somehow they need to find their HEA. Since they are Intended to one another, the entire courtship takes place over a week or two, with very little wooing necessary. During this time they take a short trip to Castle Grimm for the sole purpose of reintroducing all the past characters in the series to allow them to take a final bow. The machinations of secondary characters is kept vague, and towards the end of the story a lot more is told to the reader rather than allowing us to experience it with the characters.
However, even with a thin plot and a few plot holes, I did like this story and would recommend it to someone who is a light paranormal reader.
I would also recommend that after reading this story you dig out a copy of Lynn Kurland’s Stardust of Yesterday or Much Ado In the Moonlight to read a much better Ghost/Mortal romance story
I have not finished this book yet. At first I like it. It was different with the hero being a ghost, but enjoyable. I like the sisters. The all of a sudden it takes a huge turn and now it is a different book. I don't like it. They take off to a different castle. A bunch of new people are introduced to Emma. All the men are oogling her and whistling and fawning all over her. Then "scampering" away as a ghost Christian scowls at them. Then one of the men was hitting on her during the tournament. Christian sees this and again scowls. Then the guy who was hitting on Emma laughs and runs off with his sword hitting his thigh. I seriously just pictured him as an evil cartoon villain. In fact since the tournament the book has turned very cartoonish. They saw Err a lot and throw back their heads and laugh or "roar" at times when nothing was funny.

I loved this book as much as I've loved the others I've read by Cindy Miles. In this book Christian of Arrick-by-the-Sea knows that Emma Calhoun is his soul mate but decides not to pursue breaking the curse that keeps him a ghost and her from falling in love with him. Four lovely witches are assigned to break the curse and complete Christian and Emma's destiny.
I found myself getting caught up in this story right away and wanted so much for this to work out for them. There were lots of surprises along the way. My favorite part was the competitions between the jousting teams of mortals and ghosts alike.
Interesting idea with the soul mates meeting every 72 years. I really liked the witches who were trying to help as well.
What I enjoyed: * The witches. I would have liked to learn more about them. * Christian is the perfect hero. * Ellie is fairly resourceful and determined. * Jason is sweet.
What could have been better: * The book seemed to drag at times. * The reunion felt a bit forced, and while it was nice to see characters again, it would have been annoying if I hadn't read the other books. Even though I did, I was still having trouble trying to remember certain characters.
Great book! Its a book you read by the pool, or take with you while you are at the doctors or waiting for something. Its a sweet story, great end to the series. It brings together old "friends" of past books and adds closure to the series. You will cheer the characters on, and instantly love them. If you are looking for a smooth flowing quick, light read then this is a great choice.
I liked the story between the ant and prot, but all the extra ghosts popping in and out and and the way the former characters all descended on us at the end was a bit overwhelming. Still I enjoyed reading the latest in Cindy's collection.
I liked this one best out of all her books so far. I love them all, but this one tied in all of the former characters making it great to keep track of everybody and learn the history of all of these warriors and heros. Didn't have to skip the last chapter, just a few pages!
An okay read, kind of predictable after reading all the previous books. It was fun to see all the old characters pop up, but kind of made me frustrated when trying to remember each of them. I had read the other books quite a while ago. Love this author though.
