Jan (booklover777) | 24 comments I just finished Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks and enjoyed it immensely. The author weaves historical detail into the story with ease. I read it in 1 day, 2 sittings, and finished it at 2am! I read it because I loved People of the Book and I was not disappointed.

message 5202: by Petra (new)

Petra Jan, I've only read Geraldine Brook's March, which I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to reading her other books, too.

I finished Skippy Dies this weekend. Paul Murray tells this story well. He has a lot of themes going on and he manages to bring it all together for the ending. I've put Murray's other book, An Evening of Long Goodbyes: A Novel on my TBR list.

David Gross (docdavesvoice) Selected Poems of Shmuel HaNagid by Shmuel HaNagid Shmuel HaNagid

I'm reading these poems written between 1013 and 1056 C.E. and translated from the Hebrew by Peter Cole. This as more background material for a historical novel set in Moslem Spain.

That's a very interesting setting for a book. I hope you keep us posted, David.

I thoroughly enjoyed both PEOPLE OF THE BOOK & THE YEAR OF WONDER.

I get migraines, too. I love audible books for those times, because I can stay in bed with the lights off, a cool clothe on my eyes, and listen to a good book.

S.D. | 16 comments I just finished A HARD DAY'S FRIGHT, the latest in the Pepper Martin series by Casey Daniels. I bought the first book in the series several years ago when I was looking for a "nice clean" paranormal mystery for my niece. I read it first just to make sure and fell in love with the series. Pepper is a cemetery tour guide but after falling and hitting her head on a tombstone, she starts to see dead people. And they usually need her help.

Karen (blacksnakecreek) I finished Grendel and I don't know why I ever thought it was funny. Witty might be a better word. Just started Lesley Castle by Jane Austen. She wrote it when she was 16 and I never heard of it before. So far, pretty good.

Shmuel Ben Yosef Ha-Levi (HaNagid) was a scholar/poet/warrior/general and adviser to the king during his life (993-1056 C.E.). He was also a Jew. What a main character for a novel!

message 5218: by Traci (new)

Traci The Inheritance & Other Stories by Robin Hobb Robin Hobb is one of my favorite authors. The book I read under her other name, Megan Lindholm, I didn't like as much. But three stories into this collection I'm happy. The one I just finished posed the question of when are you responsible for your own body, to what degree, and how far would you go to stop someone you love from making a mistake.

message 5219: by S.D. (new)

S.D. | 16 comments Rick, no, that title was a take on the Beatles song because the plot centered around someone murdered during that era after attending a Beatles concert. She has "chick and the dead," "tombs of endearment," "night of the loving dead," "tomb with a view," "dead man talking," all clever titles.

message 5220: by Jan (new)

Jan (booklover777) | 24 comments I just started The King of Diamonds by Simon Tolkien. I'm barely into it but am looking forward to reading it.

message 5221: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently reading 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. I heard about all the hype and was a little skeptical about picking it up. I was afraid that it was another 'fad' novel that you would regret purchasing after reading the first chapter. I was persuaded by my boyfriend to pick it up since he enjoyed the film. I have to say though, that I am truly enjoying the book. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I also have a tendency to read more than one book at a time. I'm also reading Ham and Rye by Charles Bukowski, and The General in his Labyrinthe by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I love both authors and have been fond of their work for years.

I'm reading Down Town by Ferrol Sams for my local book club. The book is a sort of tongue in cheek history of the American South told by a native son. The book is amusing with some interesting characters.

Bill | 1301 comments I started two new books on Sunday, one a humour book I'd read many, many years ago, while I was in high school, The Return of Hyman Kaplan, by Leo Rosten. I found it in a neat used book store in Ottawa, The Book Depository, after looking in pretty well every book store I could go to. Still trying to find the first, but I will... the joy of the hunt. :0). I'm also reading the 2nd installment in the Dresden Files, Fool Moon, by Jim Butcher. I do like his stories

V.H. Folland (VHFolland) | 14 comments Just moved onto some non-fiction: 'Johnnie' Johnson's Full Circle: The history of air warefare. I've read it before but it was years ago, and I don't remember the details. Full Circle: The Story of Air Fighting

Finished the Father Brown stories and loved them. It's nice the find a detective series where you can't always predict the killer.

Dick Peterson (dickpeterson) I'm reading Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast because a writer for whom I have large respect said it is his favorite and is enjoyed by him annually. I chose this time to do so as a result of becoming aware of The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, which I believe will be an interesting fictional post-Feast read. In fact, I was recently discussing the tandem with a friend who had just finished them. She said it was a great one-two punch.

I'm also reading The Hunter by James Martin. James is an indy author like myself. His story is a bit outside of my normal window of operations, but I co-moderate the selfpublish community at Reddit with him and another fellow. Since I have learned through that experience that he is a good guy who thinks in an interesting way, I wanted to read his novel and post a review for him.

Lisa Reads & Reviews (lisareviews) I'm reading OLD MAN'S WAR by John Scalzi. Mark Twain's LETTERS FROM THE EARTH, and STRUCTURE OF DELIGHT by Nelson Zink are on the side for picking through a little at a time.

Generally I'm engaged in one novel with other books as side dishes.

message 5239: by KOMET (new)

KOMET | 871 comments I'm now reading Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn

Kitty's House of Horrors (Kitty Norville, #7) by Carrie Vaughn

This novel is a part of the Kitty Norville Series, which I've been avidly reading from for the past few years. Kitty is a radio talk show host and a werewolf who "has agreed to appear on TV's first all-supernatural reality show."

Kitty and the other participants are spending 2 weeks at a furnished lodge situated far from the nearest town in the wilds of Montana, where the show is being filmed. In the process, Kitty experiences more than what she bargained for. So far, I'm enjoying this novel a lot.

I just read that Stephen King is now going to write a new book in the Dark Towers series. It will not change how the series ends but will tie up lose ends he thought her had. He said it will come right after book 4 I believe.

message 5250: by Tasha (new)

Tasha (tashabpanda) I'm currently reading Twentieth Century Anglo-Welsh poetry, which is an anthology exploring Welsh poets who primarily write in English. It's enlightening because I too only write poetry in English, despite being welsh. It questions where the identity of nationality comes into play with literature that is written in a different language x
