Reading Catch 22. Starting Jezebel's Daughter by Wilkie Collins Cannot wait to see what he has for me this time.

Susan (chlokara) Kathleen wrote: "At the moment I am reading The Seance because I'm intrigued by Victorian era ghost stories and How It Was by Mary Walsh Hemingway because you can never know too much about EH."
Reading
The Paris Wife has gotten me interested again in Hemingway. Next on my list are a reread of The Hemingway Women by Bernice Kert that I read many years ago, and Travels with Myself and Another: A Memoir by his third wife Martha Gelhorn. I am also going to try reading The Sun Also Rises, although I much prefer reading ABOUT Hemingway to reading Hemingway. I do not like his writing style.

message 5153: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Started The Recognitions by William Gaddis as part of a challenge. Very intimidating book but fascinating start. Not speedy but I am enjoying the writing.
Also The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, another group's monthly read. I like to balance difficult books with current popular ones & I've always been intrigued with the story of Hemingway, his wife, and his lost suitcase.

message 5154: by Diane (new)

Diane Just finished The Jewel of Medina. Found this quite interest. Want to down load Caring for Eleanor. Would like to start that. Also starting to read In The Garden of Beasts. Ellie let me know how you like The Paris Wife. I have heard it is good.

Gordon Doherty | 4 comments Just finished reading Vespasian: Tribune of Rome. I read it as I usually demolish historical fiction, particularly from the Roman era, but this was also only a bargain 99 cents for the Kindle!

My review is here:

new title for me! The Paris Wife!

message 5158: by Brick (new)

Brick Marlin Finished Deeper and Deathworld 1 and have started reading the work of one of my favorite authors, his book Player Piano. This book doesn't seem to have gotten very many good reviews, but since it was Vonnegut's first, I'm giving it a try.

I finished it last night and posted a review. I had a mixed reaction -- it was beautifully written with lots of atmosphere but I found it confusing and very hard to follow in places. The last chapter was great.

I LOVED The Paris Wife. This is my blog post about it: http://parlezmoiblog.blogspot.com/201...

If you haven't read A Moveable Feast you should as it will really enhance your understanding of that book. I'm in the middle of Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon -- so brilliant.

message 5162: by Werner (new)

Werner I'm currently reading another of Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm novels, Murderers' Row. It was a gift some time ago, along with a few other books by the same author, from a friend who'd picked them up free on BookMooch; and Hamilton tends to provide straightforward, quickly-finished, plot-driven reads that are serviceable stopgaps between other reading projects, which is what I want right now.

do you picture Dean Martin when you are reading it?!

message 5165: by Werner (new)

Werner No, Rick, actually I don't --I never saw the movie "adaptation" (though from what I've read, it was more of a distortion) starring Martin, so that mental picture doesn't leap to mind. :-) Then too, from what I did see of Martin's movies, his general persona was really a lot different from the way that Hamilton develops Helm. The latter isn't a polished James Bond type; he's much more rough-edged.

It appears as if he suffered from depression. His memoir Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness probably gives some insight into that.

If you are poking around in our linguistic roots, you might have a look at "Piers Plowman" and, of course, "Beowulf". "Beowulf" is old enough that it probably qualifies as German Lit rather than English, but it is a remarkable tale in any language. Enjoy.

Years ago, I read the book, then watched the movie. At the time, I found the movie better than the book. I don't know if I'd feel that way now but at the time I found that the book was highly loaded with pages and pages of descriptions of houses and leaves turning on the branches, etc. The movie followed the story line of the book exactly without watching leaves turn, etc.
Either way, I really enjoyed the story.
I'm sorry to hear that Styron was chased by demons.

I listened to this one, too. I've enjoyed the Lincoln Rhyme series. They're fun to read.

message 5177: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm currently reading Skippy Dies (it was recommended by a friend), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (for a group read) and The Invisible Bridge (it's been on my TBR list for awhile).
I hope to finish reading Skippy Dies this weekend.

Cathy Crane | 3 comments I'm reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett - or sort of. I'm really slogging through it ...I keep putting it down and picking up something else. I don't know why...it's a well written book and a good story...I'm just not finding it very compelling.

My other summer reading so far - books that I finished:

All (except the latest) of the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris - the novels that the True Blood HBO series is based on. These are a hoot.

The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman. I love her books and she just keeps getting better.

Break the Skin by Lee Martin. After reading The Bright Forever and River of Heaven he's become one of my favorites. I wasn't disappointed by this newest book.

Finally, I'm currently reading The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan. This has been getting good reviews and is touted as "literary" horror. I'm finding it hard to put down. I'll be looking for more of his books.

Lori Anderson (lorianderson) I just finished "The Winter Sea" and am now tackling "A Game of Thrones" -- started it last night.

message 5180: by Ivan (new)

Ivan | 8 comments I'm reading The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier and am thoroughly enjoying it. I've read three other works by Dame Daphne Rebecca, Don't Look Now: Selected Stories of Daphne Du Maurier (which features "The Birds" as well) and her memoir Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer. "...Strand" is one of her late novels and features drugs and time travel; thus far another winner.

message 5181: by Karen (new)

Karen (blacksnakecreek) I am re-reading Grendel. I've read it several times and it is a compelling book. I got it from the library and I wanted something light, funny and entertaining because of the hot weather and currently heavy work load. I wanted to relax in the evening. So I don't know why I checked out Grendel. Not light, not funny. Well, sort of funny. Gardner has a way with phrasing. Maybe I'll figure out why I got it by the time I get done with it.

I don't know, but the ones he did write were all excellent. Didn't he have a problem with debilitating depression? I know he had a lot of problems.

But my library group wants to read War and Peace - starting next month. So I'll give it a try. We're the using the new translation.

I'm reading Butter Safe Than Sorry by Tamar Myers, a humorous cozy mystery with one of the oddest "detectives" I've come across. Magdalena is an Amish-Mennonite woman married to a Jewish man and she has a wicked sense of humor to go with her detective instincts. This book is #18 in the series but the first I've read.
