WHAT ARE YOU READING AND WHY!!
Night of Flames: A Novel of World War IIWORLD WAR TWO BEGAN 70 YEARS AGO TODAY
NIGHT OF FLAMES TELLS THE STORY
The award-winning novel is my recommendation to commemorate the beginning of the largest conflict in world history. Read about it through the eyes of Polish cavalry officer Jan Kopernik and his college professor wife, Anna, in their five year quest for freedom.

I read that a few years ago. I haven't added it to my read list yet, because I was on Shelfari years before Goodreads and I have more books added there rather than over here. One day, I'll get them over here. lol
Anyway, I like to read more than one book at a time too.
Currently, I'm reading
Blood Sacrifice by Maria Lima (paranormal romance)
Fallen by Lauren Kate (YA paranormal romance)
A Feast For Crows by George R.R. Martin (fantasy)
Oh, and I'm reading these books because I love to read romance, especially paranormal. As for AFFC, for the longest, I've wanted to read an epic book that has it all - romance, adventure, action, and so much more and something long, and the A Song Of Ice and Fire is it. lol And AFFC is the 4th book in the series.

Yes there were several other books that followed- very important to read the first one though- because the other ones assume you are familiar with the characters and events in the original classic!

I just finished reading Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon and thoroughly enjoyed it...sword and sorcery fantasy the way I like it. Now, I'm starting to read Terry Brooks' Running with the Demon. I really liked his Sword of Shannara series, so we'll see what I think of his The Word and the Void series.

my pleasure! great reads!!
my pleasure! great reads!!
I'm reading Jack Rogan's "The Ocean Dark." It's sort of Benchley's "The Island" meets Crichton's "Jurassic Park" meets Fahy's "Fragment." It's an awesome monster book! And I also have never read The Da Vinci code.
Earlier I wrote that I was reading The Ballad of Johnny Madigan by John A. Bray. If any of you enjoy Civil War stories, I thought this one was great.
I have just finished Mordecai: The Life and Times by Charles Foran (can't find this on goodreads). It is close to 700 pages, but so worth it to stick it out. The second half of the book is (in my opinion) much more interesting than the first half. The first half tells of his moving from Montreal to London England and trying to get his first novel published, and the various friends he was spending time with. But it is the second half, detailing Mordecai Richler's views on Quebec separation, politics, religion, his family life that I found really interesting. The book tells of how much he loved his family and wife and the ending made me tear up. This was well worth the read.

I read quite a diverse set of books in August and enjoyed them all:An Elevated View: Colorado Writers on Writing (an excellent essay anthology)
Carte Blanche
On the Wrong Track
Quick Service (a hoot and a half!)
Heaven's Keep
...and I'm currently reading
The Roald Dahl Omnibus: Perfect Bedtime Stories for Sleepless Nights, an excellent collection of faintly creepy short stories.
I just started Lumen by Ben Pastor. In 1939, in Nazi-occupied Poland, a American priest from Chicago and a German army captain investigate a nun's death. It's good so far with well-drawn characters.

*deep breath*I am currently reading:
Storm Front by Jim Butcher
The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman (re-read)
Nine Horses: Poems by Billy Collins
Sleepwalk with Me by Mike Birbiglia
Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand
Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
Uncle Silas by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
Watchmen by Alan Moore (re-read)
I am currently reading Indian Country Noir. These are dark intense stories mainly written by Native Americans. I'm interested in Native American literature.
Hey Rick I noticed you are reading In the Company of the Courtesan as am I. What do you think of it so far? I've only read about 32 pages but it's very slow going so far. Where are you at? Does it pick up pace? I recently finished The Birth of Venus & felt that was slow going as well but picked up after a while.

I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm reading it with a group that reads a certain number of chapters each week, and drawing it out like that adds to the suspense. I don't always like reading books in that manner, but it works wonderfully for this one.
Denae, that's an impressive list! How are you finding Gravity's Rainbow? That one seems a bit intimidating. I'm reading The Namesake. As the first-born of immigrant parents, I can identify with a lot of the experiences of the main character. Ms Lahiri's writing is well worded and she tells an interesting story of an identy lost between two cultures.
I'm listening to Dracula: The Undead during my commutes. Unfortunately, Dacre doesn't have the finesse or story-telling abilities of his great-grand-uncle. And he disses Bram in the book, which is kind of unkind.
I'll be starting The Odyssey tomorrow for a group read here on GR.

Gravity's Rainbow is very dense, but overall I am enjoying it more than I expected. I was hitting a bit of a wall today, but I chalk that up to mood. It's one of those books where there are bits I have to push through and others that go by very quickly.

If you like good YA story, you'll like Jake Ransom as well!
I'm currently reading "Mistress of Dragons by Margaret Weiss". Getting ready to read "The Elder Blood Chronicles Book Two Blood, Honor and Dreams" by Melissa Myers as soon as it comes out. Also reading a Western "The Texan's Wager by Jodi Thomas", haven't gotten to about page 12 on it though.
I just got to Venice & started to get into it more but then I fell asleep LOL Probably read it more today when I'm done checking emails & doing some cleaning. Thanks Rick =)
I'm reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer (part of out group read, finding it a bit slow) and Fateful by Cheri Schmidt which is really good and I can't put it down! It reminds me of Twilight in some ways but very different in others!
I'm currently reading Liesl and Po by Lauren Oliver and listening to Wise Man's Fear by Parick Rothfuss. Both are very good so far.

Denae, I love the Mrs Polifax novels!
They were favorites in my youth, so they're fun re-reads and palate cleansers. They just make me smile.

I am persevering through A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin and am enjoying reading Half Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan, which is a candidate for this year's Mann Booker Prize.
I am reading A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan for my personal list of books to read. It is okay, but I haven't been suck in by the storyline quite yet. I am also reading The Marrow of Tradition by Charles W. Chesnutt as a group read. I just started and I am having trouble with the dialect of the servant, but I will persevere. The last book I am reading is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott as a group read. I enjoyed the book and movie as a child, so I look forward to reading it again.
I'm reading Just Like Heaven an historical romance by one of my favourite authors, Julia Quinn. Combines a heartwarming love story and lots of humour so well.
