🎼 Originally formed in 1997 as a solo project for singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard, Death Cab for Cutie grew into a huge underground sensation that helped shape the early 2000 emo genre. Gibbard was an environmental chemistry student at Western Washington University when he began performing under the name All-Time Quarterback. In the mid-1990s, he met guitarist Chris Walla at school, and they began writing and recording songs together. They released Gibbard’s songs into a cassette-released album title You Can Play These Songs with Chords, which became a local favorite and helped Gibbard become more established.
🎼 🎼 🎼 🎼 🎼 🎼
Challenge Rules
(view spoiler)
1. Read a book that is a standalone or solo book OR Read a book that has the word “cassette” in the text (share page/loc and partial sentences).
2. Read a book that takes place in Washington state OR Read a book with the letters ATQ in the title (any order) OR Read a book where the environment plays a part (you decide).
3. Read a book that has a character named Ben or Chris OR Read a book with a character that plays guitar or a guitar on the cover OR Read a book with two main characters.
🎼Death Cab for Cutie made their official debut with Walla playing keyboard and guitar and fellow university friends Nick Harmer on bass and Nathan Good on drums. Death Cab for Cutie’s name came from the song “Death Cab For Cutie” by the band Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. In 1998 their album Something About Airplanes started to circulate through underground music scenes throughout the United States. However, before their next album was released, Michael Schorr replaced Nathan Good as drummer.
4. Read a book with college students as the main character(s) OR Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1990s OR Read a book with a dog on the cover (show cover) or in the title.
5. Read a book with an airplane on the cover or in the story OR Read a book that has something take place underground somehow (you decide).
6. Read a book with the first letter of each title word can be found in DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE (three word minimum) OR Read a book that is a debut OR Read a book where someone replaces someone else.
🎼, Death Cab’s next album, We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes was released in 2000 and sold really well for an independent release, so they quickly released their next album, Forbidden Love. By 2002 they were really changing. Schorr was replaced by Jason McGerr and other band members were pursuing solo projects. In 2003 their fourth album, Transatlanticism was released to critical acclaim and mainstream commercial success. Two of their singles appeared on several soundtracks, including the television shows The O.C. and CSI: Miami, and movies like The Wedding Crashers and Easy A.
7. Read a book where a character votes on something OR Read a book with forbidden love (you decide).
8. Read a book that has a 2, 0, 0 or 2 in the page count (Tell us what it is) OR Read a book that is also a movie or television show.
🎼 Transatlanticism was inspired by the distances between Gibbard’s geographical and emotional relationships with his bandmates and partner. The process for creating the album was also unorthodox in that Gibbard provided a number of demo songs and the group worked on it over distance, and Gibbard used different strategies, like Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, to spark creativity. The band signed with Atlantic in 2004 and released the album Plans in 2005, which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. The songs "I Will Follow You into the Dark," "Crooked Teeth," and "Soul Meets Body" were hits. The band released a touring DVD in 2005 and copies were given away to promote animal rights.
9. Read a book where characters are separated geographically OR Read a book with the letters PLANS in the title (any order).
10. Read a book with a dark cover (show cover) OR Read a book with teeth on the cover (show cover) OR Read a book published in the 2000s.
11. Read a book that features an animal OR Read a book that where a character is creative OR Read a book that is unorthodox in writing or narrative style (you decide).
🎼 Mainly because of their touring schedule, it took nearly three years for the follow-up album, Narrow Stairs, which proved to be an even bigger success. Death Cab spent most of 2008 and half of 2009 touring, including to Japan and Australia. In spring of 2009 they released The Open Door before Gibbard took a break and married actress/singer Zooey Deschanel. In 2011 the album Codes and Keys was released.
12. Read a book with stairs or a door on the cover (show cover) OR Read a book that takes place in Japan or Australia OR Read a book where a character takes a break (you decide).
13. Read a book that is tagged Music OR Read a book where a character gets married OR Read a book with a character that is an actress.
🎼In 2014, after 17 years as a member of Death Cab for Cutie, guitarist and songwriter Chris Walla decided to part ways with the band. He was replaced with guitarists and keyboardists Dave Depper and Zac Rae. Since then, the band has released four more albums, including Kintsugi, which won the 2016 Best Rock Album Grammy. The album title was inspired by the Japanese art of the same name, which involves fixing broken pottery and is a philosophy of treating breakage and repair as part of the history of the object. Their most recent album was 2022’s Asphalt Meadows. Death Cab for Cutie’s music has been labeled indie rock, indie pop, emo, and alternative rock, effectively defying categorization. The group has won numerous awards and accolades and continues to challenge musical expectations.

🎼 Transatlanticism: 2-5 tasks
🎼 Plans: 6-10 tasks
🎼 Codes and Keys: 11-15 tasks
14. Read a book where something breaks and is repaired (you decide) OR Read a book where art plays an important part OR Read a book published in 2022.
15. Read a book that has won an award OR Read a book that has a road on the cover (show cover) OR Read a book that could be tagged more than one genre. Tell us the genres.
