Before she became a nationally bestselling author, she was a mother struggling to keep food on the table by writing novels, hoping against hope that someone would pay her for them. Today, neck deep in murder, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.
With dozens of bestsellers to her name, Lisa Jackson is a master of taking readers to the edge of sanity—and back—in novels that buzz with dangerous secrets and deadly passions. She continues to be fascinated by the minds and motives of both her killers and their pursuers—the personal, the professional, and the downright twisted. As she builds the puzzle of relationships, actions, clues, lies, and personal histories that haunt her protagonists, she must also confront the fear and terror faced by her victims and the harsh and enduring truth that, in the real world, terror and madness touch far too many lives and families.
In this 6th book in the 'To Die' series, there's a lot going on in Grizzly Falls, Montana - including murder, stalking, and marriage. I read the book as a standalone with no problem.
*****
When the bodies of a couple of murdered women - each missing a finger - turn up in Grizzly Falls, Montana it seems clear a serial killer is on the loose. Long-time detective partners Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli investigate the crimes.
Regan is having a tough time, though, for a variety of reasons: the sheriff's department has a new acting sheriff she can't stand; she's getting ready for her marriage and new home; and her teenage daughter is acting out and giving her a hard time.
Meanwhile - just before the murders start - a woman on the run lands in town, disguising her appearance and calling herself Jessica. Jessica rents an isolated cabin in the woods and takes a job as a waitress. A man named Troy Ryder is on her trail for reasons that become clear as the story unfolds. Jessica is convinced that the 'missing finger deaths' are meant to terrify her but - because of her past - is too scared to notify the police.
There's a lot of cat and mouse activity in the book as Troy Ryder stealthily stalks Jessica, and this rachets up the suspense. There are also an array of characters that add interest to the story: a cowboy heartthrob who knew Jessica a long time ago, his rough and ready brother, the ambitious acting sheriff who craves the limelight, Regan's handsome/sexy fiance, and so on.
The story holds your attention, is fast-moving, and rolls along to a dramatic conclusion.
I enjoyed the book but there were some problems in the story for me. For example I didn't understand some of Jessica's actions. I kept thinking - why would she rent a primitive, uncomfortable cabin deep in the woods (presumably to hide out in) and then take a very public job as a waitress where anyone could (and did) find her? I also didn't buy into the reasons Jessica couldn't notify the police when she seriously believed her life was in danger. For these reasons this was a three-star-book for me.
I have not read anything by Lisa Jackson before, nor was familiar with the main characters in this novel. However, I am an avid reader of crime fiction, it being my most read genre, and have read many styles of crime novels over many years. So I was looking forward to reading this.
In Grizzly Falls, Montana, Detectives Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli are struggling with a new commander and a department in the midst of upheaval. It's the worst possible time for a homicide. A body has been found, missing a finger. Alvarez hopes this means a murderer with a personal grudge, not a madman. But then a second body turns up...
The first half of the book was difficult to follow at times, there were a LOT of characters and it was hard to follow who was who apart from the two main Detectives, Alvarez and Pescoli. Whilst the book is partly about their investigation of the death of a woman missing her ring finger, it's also got a lot of side stories weaved in.
There is also a lot of focus on the personal lives of the two detectives, I think some background is good in building up character profiles, but I did feel at times this was TOO much, taking away from the buzz of it essentially being a crime novel. I was wanting to skip some of the sections focused on their homes and relationships (I didn't) and get to the more meaty parts of the book.
A stranger is in town also, on the run, and this character plays a big part in the story too, I felt that this character was one of the better portrayed actually and one that I connected with the most, the most tangible. I struggled to relate at all to either Detective Alvarez of Pescoli, they seemed out of reach to me despite so much private life detail. Like I could not quite touch them in the novel.
I found the first half of the book slow going, nothing much piecing together and not enjoying it that much. But the latter half of the book I found was much more readable, had more action and became more of the crime novel that it is.
The few different stories intersect towards the end of the book and bits and pieces start to make more sense, up to this point at times it seems disjointed, and the style of writing different depending on who was the focus of the chapter and what was the focus. There was certainly TOO much information in some chapters, getting you lost in a sea of words.
It was an ok read, not the best crime novel I have ever read, nor the worst, just sitting on the fence as mediocre. I am not very inspired to read more of Lisa Jackson but perhaps may try something different of hers outside of the characters of these two female detectives to see if it's much different.
I received a copy of this novel thanks to the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, my thanks for the opportunity.

** “She needed books like others need air to live” **
This is what I expect to be the last installment to the 'to die' series. The series has been really enjoyable. This is one of the series that I wanted to complete in 2015 and I am glad to have gotten through it, but will miss this great characters I have come to love.
In this installment we have a serial killer going after women and before they die he cuts off their left ring finger and he walks away. Alvarez and Pescoli must figure out the connection between the murders and who else might be involved.
Again the plot line is full of mystery and I love it. Especially when more than one mystery coincide with one another. The imagery again is fantastic. I found this last installment to be very engaging and very fast paced. Always something to question.
These characters, Alvarez and Pescoli are probably my favorite female detectives. They have many flaws and many of their own issues to deal with, yet they always get the job done. I think of the two, Pescoli is my favorite. They both developed very well throughout the seris and I am happy the ay that they were written, an amazing job by Jackson.
I recommend this entire series to any mystery lover that enjoys really strong female protagonists, yet they show many flaws and work through them rather than let them get in the way. If there is to be anymore books to this series, I will of course read them.
Author Lisa Jackson was very tricky here! We see a man dumping a tortured woman's body in the Louisiana swamps. Did the woman get eaten by gators? Did she die? Did she survive? All we know is that he cut off her ring finger.
Move on to Grizzly Falls, Montana. It is near Valentine's Day, blizzards are raging, and beloved sheriff Dan Grayson, severely wounded in the last book, lays dying in the hospital. We have our usual female detective duo of Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli with the focus and viewpoint this time being that of Regan Pescoli. Her teen son Jeremy and daughter Bianca (by her two exes) aren't thrilled she plans to marry her lover Nate Santana. She has been wishy-washy about it herself, fearing she'll make another mistake. Santana is building them a dream home and wanting to set the date while Pescoli hasn't even been wearing her engagement ring. She is torn up about Sheriff Grayson and refuses to like his replacement Sheriff Hooper Blackwater. Oh and she is secretly pregnant with an unplanned baby at 40 just as her kids are leaving the nest and trying to hide it-even from Santana and the kids.
A new mystery woman in disguise moves to town, fearful she is being followed, and gets a job as waitress in the diner while living in a dilapidated shack in an isolated area. A man looking for a woman shows up at the local dumpy motel and unknown to him, a stranger has shown up to stay at the same motel spying on him. Then something terrible begins- two women are murdered, their ring fingers with diamond rings hacked off, and it looks like a serial killer has again entered Grizzly Falls.
One of the best in the series. Another serial killer is loose in Grizzly Falls in January, and oh shocker - a bad snow storm is pushing through the area :) A sad, but inevitiable thing happens in the first part of the book and it's interesting to see how the characters react and cope. And a new sheriff is in town and not one that everyone likes or trusts - maybe because of his political intensions.
Some red herrings are thrown in your path, and it isn't evident who the killer is, in fact you don't actually "meet" the killer until the latter part of the book.
Character development continues in a good way (at least to me) and Pescoli's kids aren't nearly as annoying in this book - maybe they are finally maturing some.
Detectives Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli, based in Montana, have a new commander who is bringing in big changes. They have a new case, a murder where the victim is missing a digit, then there's another body found, suggesting that there is a serial killer on the lose.
The book was very slow to get started unfortunately. I picked it up and put it down several times and had to force myself to continue reading. There were various storylines introduced in the first half which don't seem to have a place, seem to be detouring from the plot and it takes some perseverance to continue reading until they make sense. We are provided with in depth background about the detectives' lives which, in my opinion, distracts from the mystery story. I do like to know about the characters but there is too much taking the focus away from the plot and preventing it from it's potential.
I read to the end but I didn't find it exciting and I'm not encouraged to try other books by this author.
I just couldn't get beyond the lack of editing or even copyediting. The plot and characterization may be great--I don't know. There were a lot of characters and storylines all introduced in rapid succession in the opening chapters. But I'd have kept reading if it weren't for bits like this:
"No longer could she taunt or ridicule anyone. No longer would she ever smirk again."
"She needed to unload the Tahoe, clean the place up if she could, dare start a fire and settle in for the night."
"Fear cold as an Arctic blast cut through him as he saw what the dog had sensed."
I have nothing against indie-published authors, but you've got to hire an editor, a copyeditor, and a proofreader. One or several people dropped the ball here, if they were hired in the first place. I was reading an ARC provided by the publisher. I'm just hoping they pulled the title back and decided to do more editing before it was actually released.
This one was good also. This one was a little different however. A woman escaped from her very abusive husband. She ended up landing in Grizzly Falls. The home of Detectives Pescoli and Alvarez. As if they needed anymore problems with all the serial killers they've had. Anne-Marie's husband is out to find her and kill her. She's been running from him for months. Has he caught up with her, is it him leaving the grizzly messages for her she can't ignore? Plenty of death and mayhem and loads of action on this book as well. I can't ever put these books down and read them quickly because of it. You really should check Lisa's writing out. Very good book.
I think this series should be finished after this one, but I am afraid the author will just keep going and going. I didn't care for this one as much as I liked the previous books, they are starting to get tired.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
As usual Lisa Jackson never fails to please! Lots of action, romance, intrigue. The characters are well developed. Too often novels have over done sex - Lisa Jackson keeps it to a tasteful level.
I normally enjoy books by Lisa Jackson, but this book was not up to par. There were several errors in this book, and it clearly lacked decent editing. For example, one of the victims was said to be a corporate lawyer when they were first introduced, but later was described as "a consultant. An engineer. Worked with road crews." Another error that I noticed was that, when Jessica first arrived at the cabin, there was no power, but there was mention of her making microwave popcorn before the electricity had been turned on. spoiler: Unfortunately, these errors, coupled with the way the book dragged (more often than not, I skipped over entire paragraphs that were completely extraneous to the story) made this book my least favorite Jackson book to date.
Very good! I loved this series! Quite excited.....the book was ended where another book could be easily added to this series. Likeable characters, interesting story lines, twists and turns make Lisa one of my favorite authors.
I love the To Die Series, because I love strong, feisty woman. It's not just the strong female characters that I like either. I love the action and the plot lines. I hope Ms. Jackson keeps this series going.
She ran from New Orleans barely escaping death at the hands of her husband….
She stole $50,00 to help make her escape…
She has purchased a variety of items to totally change her looks…
She has purchased a series of driver’s licenses and passport in a variety of names with a varying look for each….
She has purchased a nondescript vehicle, and made her way to Grizzly Falls, Montana, where she is planning to enlist the sheriff’s help…but she’s too late! The Sheriff is in the hospital in a coma after being shot in the head; he dies of a coronary as she whirls into town.
Detectives Selena Alverez and Regan Pescoli are both struggling with first the shooting of the Sheriff. Their mentor then succumbs, but not to his wounds but heart failure.
A new sheriff has been appointed, neither of the women like him. Both are suffering through their own private upheavals. Then a body is found, her ring finger is missing, they can only hope this is personal; but, a second body is found….
Now Pescoli and Alverez must find the target of the wrath of a madman; so they can stop the madness cold!
Lisa Jackson knows how to books that keep your heart pumping!
Clearly 5 STARS.... So glad to get back to Montana and my favorite Sheriff in this book. A shocking Surprise, he was shot and killed :-( A new Sheriff now, but the Gang are shocked on the death and not sure what they think of the new guy... I was shocked myself and saddened. However a GREAT Read as always with this SERIES
Story was kind of improbable for me. Although initially I wanted to find out what this woman was doing in the middle of winter. Going to a ramshackle cabin in the middle of nowhere. Running from somewhere. The person she hoped to help her has just recently been killed. Just an ok read. Nothing fantastic for me.

Confused me to start, I had a tough time figuring out who was speaking in any particular chapter. But I figured it out. Poor Grizzly Falls, there's something about that town that attracts serial killers, and here we go again.
Detectives Selena Alvarez and Regan Pescoli of the Pinewood County Sheriff’s office are reeling from the injury to Sheriff Dan Grayson, he's in critical condition but expected to recover. Meanwhile, he's been replaced by an outsider, acting sheriff Hooper Blackwater and there's no doubt he has aspirations to succeed Dan. Selena and Regan don't trust him, they see his political side and try to keep their investigation away from him.
Enter Anne-Marie, she's on the run, she's been running for a quite a while. She knows Dan Grayson in a past life and is in Grizzly Falls hoping for some help from him. This is one train that's left the station, she'll end up talking to his brother as a last resort. Thankfully she's become a master of disguise while on the run. A girl's got to eat so she accepts a job in the local cafe under an assumed name and face. She knows she's being followed by an evil that's hard to understand and even harder to explain. She can feel he's close.
Then there's the bodies, bodies of young women, 2 of them with their ring finger's removed. There doesn't seem to be any connection between them except for a single fingerprint that leads them to a woman called Anne-Marie, in Texas. Little do they know that she's hiding in plain sight.
The ring is pulled tighter and tighter as the killer and the tracker all converge on Grizzly Falls.
Pescoli and Alvarez are back for the 6th book in the To Die series.
Pescoli and Alvarez are struggling with a new commander and a department in the midst of upheaval. It's the worst possible time for a homicide. A body has been found, missing a finger. Alvarez hopes this means a murderer with a personal grudge, not a madman. But then a second body turns up…
If you've read the first five books of the series you'll have more background on what's happened to Sheriff Grayson, but Jackson does a nice job of filling you in. If you haven't read the first five books you'll be fine reading this book. Personally, I would recommend reading the entire series but that's mostly my OCD talking ;)
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have the others in the series. Deserves to Die focused more on the personal life of Pescoli and not the mystery. Don't get me wrong! I love what's happening with Pescoli in her personal life, but if you ask me which I prefer, I'm going to ask for the mystery and suspense every time. I wasn't on the edge of my seat reading this one. The ending was also abrupt. Wham! Book done! All the ends were tied up in nice little bows, but just a little to quickly and nicely for my tastes.
Overall, an enjoyable read. I look forward to book 7 in the series.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
OMG I totally forgot I was never going to read another Lisa Jackson repetitious book filled with detailed descriptions of things any human being would know - like how and why Jessica turned the Open/Closed sign over in the restaurant. Do authors repeatedly tell us the same information in order to make a longer story/book? And if I ever read another woman called darlin' by a wild looking cowboy, it will be too soon.
I bet the author is as tired with the series as I am. The plot is linear and predictable, it starts slow and then drags mercilessly. The new characters are flat, the well-known characters have no development whatsoever. Inexcusable blunders abound, like a victim is "a corporate attorney and a damn good one", but few pages down that same person is [also?] "a consultant. An engineer. Worked with road crews".
It's high time the good people of Grizzly Falls were left alone.
Deserve to Die by Lisa Jackson is a great novel. All the characters are interesting complex people. This is the first book in series that I read. I feel I'd know the characters a fractured better if I started at the beginning of this series. I was intrigued enough to seek out the first five. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery based on the police solving crimes.
...not a very sympathetic heroine, liked the two female detectives but the book needs some serious editing (one of the victims is first a lawyer, then an engineer on a subsequent page) and that bothers me! Might try a future book in this series.
Not a juicy romantic novel with hot passion, not a thrilling thriller. Pretty ho-hum and spare me what looks like two ego maniac sheriffs in a row? Lastly, would it really be a Lisa Jackson book if one of the characters didn’t say “get over yourself” within the first 50 pages?
