I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I chose the latter. Way cheaper. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write...except for that graffiti phase I went through as a teenager. Oops. Did I say that out loud?

Lovely young Rosa works in the town library with her father in the 1800's where she is trying to save enough money to travel to America one day to study to become a secretary in New York. This has been a lifelong dream for Rosa since her parents consider it foolishness while they try to find a suitable husband to marry their daughter.
An ambitious and single young woman is quite frowned upon in those times but Rosa hope to teach more people to read while she tries to accomplish her goals and therefore refuses to be married off.

Mysterious James has just arrived from Transylvania to take care of family business while trying unsuccessfully to find a cure for his mother's terminal illness where most of the townspeople believe she and James are vampires due to their being afflicted from sunlight and the legends about Transylvania that have always plagued the family.
The people in the village of North Yorkshire are mostly uneducated with the true ways if the world and fall back on their history of old legends and folklore so they are very unkind and unruly around James who has always been a loner so he knows how to handle himself in most situations until the day he meets the lovely Rosa!

This was a lovely, gothic mystery and romance dealing with Dracula legends and the fear of small towns overcome by their superstition. The story was very well-written and suspenseful at times and I had no idea this was Christian mystery although I feel it is suitable for everyone. The characters were fun and amazing with their personalities relating to those difficult times in history. How difficult to be an independent woman with dreams while being chastised for wanting to be different than the usual cookie cutter mold that was expected of young ladies during that period. I'm definitely glad as a woman to have been born in this century where we can make our own choices of how we wish to live our lives. The author "Michelle Griep" did a superb job with her research of the folklore and history of that era. The book was atmospheric, mystical, entertaining as well as humorous in spots.

There was also an unexpected and seriously fun shout-out and introduction to Bram Stoker as well which I really enjoyed and appreciated. This book was truly an unexpected delight to read. I would gladly read another book written by this author. I must say that the book was more romantic than a scary vampire story which could be disappointing to some if they had other expectations but for myself this book was a wonderful, historical, romantic and suspenseful treat which I highly recommend to all readers!

I want to thank the publisher "Barbour Publishing" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this novel and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

I have given this book a rating of 4 1/2 STUNNING AND SUPERSTITIOUS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠 STARS!!

AHHHH, I want to give this book a 5 star sooooo badly! If not for the 6 times I felt that God’s name was abused, I would’ve given it an easy 5⭐️!!

The perfect gothic, Dracula inspired story that also had a big Beauty and the Beast flare, with a touch of Jane Eyre! All of this mixed with a bit of fake dating/falling for the misunderstood brooding character.
Ah, it was just so so good!

Also a good amount of medical discussion and the symptoms and treatment of porphyria in that time.

The story is both captivating and filled with suspenseful tension.
The plot is exceptional, with characters whose emotions and desires are vividly portrayed in vibrant and detailed settings.

In England, during the year 1890, there was a widespread belief among the uneducated population of North Yorkshire that vampires were still existing and thriving.

I was captivated by the first chapter. The atmosphere is somber, a little eerie, and romantic, depicting a town gripped by fear and superstitions.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Rosa and James, two captivating characters who each strive for something beyond societal expectations. Rosa is a courageous book lover determined to carve her own path, while James is an upstanding yet troubled hero grappling with the emotional scars of his past and desperate to cure his ailing mother. Their stories are filled with poignant moments of hope, heartache, and yearning that indeed drew me in.

The relationship's progression from friendship to romance was enjoyable, with just the right amount of chemistry to make it feel natural. The ending was very satisfying.

"I shall miss you, James. More than you know."
"But I do know." He stepped closer. "For you see, if you miss me half as much as I you, then your heart will bleed drip by drip until there is nothing left."

. The story is a beautifully written gothic tale that delves into themes of deep sorrow and is sure to touch your heart.
Sweet Romance, kissing only, and no cursing.

Thank you, NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for the eARC, in exchange for an honest opinion.

Yet another excellent work by Michelle Griep. Beautifully researched, excellently written. One thing I admire about Michelle is that she is so fearless, never sparing her characters, taking them so deep into trouble that you think all hope of happiness must be lost. But every time, Michelle crafts an ending both satisfying to the heart and serving the story well. The homage to Bram Stoker nu this story is a bonus treat.

Captivating

I was hooked from page one to the end! Michelle Griep is a brilliant author and just keeps getting better. I love the immersive atmosphere, the characters and timely themes, and the truth she portrays through fiction. This might be my favorite of hers so far.

A historical romance with a Gothic twist!

James was quite the brooding, tormented fellow. I wouldn't have wanted to live in 1890s England with his medical condition, but the parts about his condition were pretty fascinating. Rosa frustrated me at the beginning of the book. She kind of hated on wives and moms because she wanted to be a secretary instead. She did kind of change over the course of the book though, and I liked how she worked in a library and tried to get the townspeople to stop being so superstitious. Those townspeople ...

I was't completely sold on James and Rosa's romance. At one point, James tried to physically intimidate Rosa, and Rosa romanticized it. That was not cool!

The plot, with its drama and conniving villain, kept me reading right along. The setting was appropriately gloomy, and I found the addition of a well-known author intriguing.

Overall, I found Man of Shadow and Mist to be an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and historical romance.

"Rosa Edwards. And you are?"
"Does it matter?"
"I should say so. I would like to know who to thank."
"All thanks be to God above. As for me, none is required."

Man of Shadow and Mist (2023, Barbour), second in the Of Monsters and Men series by Michelle Griep, is a standalone Gothic romance set in 1890's Whitby, England.

Rating: 5 stars

Is it clean/chaste? Yes
Other content issues: Several mentions of mysterious animal deaths
Christian elements: God is spoken of (and to) in a positive way.

This is a rather unique series. The first book, Lost in Darkness, is a story inspired by Frankenstein. This second book is inspired by Dracula! The only reason I was willing to even touch either of these books was because a beloved author's name was on them, and I didn't want to miss out! If you're going to read book one, just be ready. It's a wonderfully fascinating book, but the reader will not be left completely unscathed. I will say that I liked this book even more than the first.

The hero: James Morgan, rather a recluse, is our Dracula figure. The story opens in Transylvania where he is working hard to make some sort of scientific discovery. James' family is "rumoured to be vampires - not that James did anything to extinguish such poppycock. Solitude was a small price to pay to pursue his research in peace." Believing that he has made the desired discovery, he decides he must go to England.

Once in England, James stays in his childhood home, described as "a hulking black fortress that blended in with the night… Morgrave Manor was as pleasant as a cold slap to the cheek." Contributing to the Gothic feel, a very disquieting and prominent gargoyle is just beyond the front door.

The heroine: Rosa Edwards is the daughter of a subscription library owner. She works for her father, and one of her responsibilities is delivering books to people with the library's delivery bicycle. While riding the bike, Rosa collides with a rock and goes flying. James happens to be nearby and helps her to her feet.

"Pardon me, but clearly the shock of the fall has bewitched you." (Shades of Jane Eyre?)

What I liked:

"I do believe that under God's Providence I have made a discovery."

*quotes from Dracula before each chapter
*Dracula's author has a cameo in this story
*the prominently featured subscription library

What I didn’t like:

*I accept it as a necessary part of the plot, but the heroine wasn't completely forthright with her father about her activities.

The bottom line: While the books in this series are not my favorite type, I am always happy to recommend Michelle Griep's stories. They are all excellently plotted and edited

Also consider trying: Book three in this series when it comes out! (I asked Ms. Griep.) Until then, how about The Thief of Blackfriars Lane , also by this author.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy of the book.

This is another great read in the "Of Monsters and Men" series. Though this is technically a series, the books are their own stories - connected only by theme, as far as I can recall. So, this could definitely be read on its own. This book hints at the legend of Dracula, complete with a reclusive man from Transylvania who can't be in the sun. When mysterious livestock deaths begin right after he appears in Whitby, England, talk of vampires runs rampant. For Rosa Edwards, it is one more reason to attempt to educate the masses out of her father's library. When her path crosses with the so-called vampire, it seems that he does have a hypnotic effect on her after all. Complete with a guest appearance of Bram Stoker, this one had all of the fun elements of the first book in the series.

This book had something for everyone. A look at history for those who enjoy historical fiction, a sweet romance for those who enjoy that genre, a mystery for those who enjoy that, a thwarted diagnosis for those who enjoy medical dramas, and of course the legends of monsters - not only vampires, but the Bargheust Hound as well. In addition, there was a solid faith thread (which you would not typically expect in a gothic "monster" novel), a strong feisty heroine that you couldn't help but cheer for, and a swoony hero. Plus a redemptive tale for one who seemed a villain for much of the story. I would also recommend reading the author's notes at the end that speak to some of the historical facts, the unusual terminology, and the unfamiliar legends. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read and one I'd heartily recommend to most anyone. Special thanks to Barbour and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

The Beauty and the Beast vibes are strong with this one...

I know what you're thinking, but hear me out: a girl who loves books and reading (and even works in a library, and her name is Rosa), a guy who lives in a castle/dark manor house, a village with superstitious people, a mob with pitchforks, a villain who incites the mob, a horse named Belle, the teme of redemption. I might have forgotten other references.

There's the vampire connection, of course. James comes from Transylvania to care for his mom who suffers from a mysterious disease. He's been researching and trying to find a cure for a long time, without success. Fresh out of the ship, he helps Rosa from a bike fall, and their lives are entwined from then on.
Having Bram Stoker as a secondary character is genius.

The setting is utterly Gothic, which I love, and the story is bewitching—couldn't put it down!

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

Feisty Rosa Edwards meets Sir James Morgan by Whitby Abbey. Rosa is a librarian and her main goal is to rid the town of their plethora of superstitions. The two characters are dawn together, but superstitions and enemies seem determined to keep them apart. This wonderfully suspenseful fantasy has the touch of Dracula and the darkness of the Gothic legends. Filled with a delectable romance between a bookish heroine and a brooding hero, throw in a family curse, and you have a delightful book filled with Griep's incredible writing.

Vampyres and other things!

A romantic gothic Victorian novel featuring the recluse Sir James Morgan who owns property in Whitby, England and in Transylvania. He suffers from the rare skin disease Porohyria, as does his dying mother. Indeed a “man of shadow and mist.” He prefers to go out in the twilight, overcast days and is always muffled up completely. His arrival back in Whitby coincides with the community having some of their animals brutally attacked by something that tears their throats out—giving rise to talk of vampires. Whispers follow to to ugly supposings.
Rosa Edwards is a determined young woman working in her family’s bookshop and lending library. Her father stocks general works but his true passion is rare books. The rare books can only be used in the library. The library is close to the shipyard. Rosa has an unwanted suitor, Albin Mallow, whom her mother’s all a flutter about, inventing occasions to bring them together—alone. Albin is nephew to a powerful and villainous man who unknown to the family wants the land their library stands on, at any cost. Rosa’s marriage to Albin would bring that about. Albin all but accuses Morgan of being a vampire in public when Morgan thwarts him from getting Rosa by herself for a carriage ride, something that all and sundry would see as a declaration.
Rosa starts to let Morgan have some rare works that are relevant to his research. Imagine my surprise when a Mr. Stoker does research for a novel he’s working on at the library in the rare book collection.
Rosa feels people won’t be as superstitious if they can be educated. Hence her efforts at persuading James Morgan to subsidize borrowing fees for others.
The story builds rapidly as Rosa suffers through pursuit by an unscrupulous party, growing feelings of attraction for the lonely lord, local superstitions becoming unbridled fears that descend into mob violence, all balanced against some good people who realize “every one of us needs a God who is bigger than we credit, else ’e’ood not be God.”
A fantastic weaving of all things known and unknown into a satisfying storyline with Stoker and his ‘vampyre’ writings being a brilliant yet unwitting lodestone in the background.
I was totally caught up in the events as they unfolded. Enthralled and intrigued I kept reading!

A Barbour ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

A bit of history, a bit of mystery and the fertile mind of Ms. Griep conjures a delightfully Gothic tale with a strong spiritual message.
James Morgan, recently returned to England from Transylvania, is very misunderstood by the townspeople. He is rumored to be a Vampire but suffers from a blood ailment. He is a godly man who only strives to uncover a treatment for his symptoms and ease the final days of his ill mother.
Rosa Edwards dreams of being a secretary while she helps her father in his subscription library. Her encounters with Sir James are more than coincidence.
With an appearance by Bram Stoker, a pesky suitor for Rosa and a bridge washout, the story takes an exciting turn.
This is a well-crafted story with superstitions and real life situations. I wanted to cheer Rosa and James and give a piece of my mind to the villains and evil instigators. I liked Rosa’s heart for wanting to dispel rumors and champion the truth. Her father was an interesting character and realistically portrayed. He was a bit distracted but always wanted justice to prevail and wanted the best for Rose.
This was a great addition to the series Of Monsters and Men. I hope for more of this kind of tale from a gifted author.

This book was so atmospheric & moody! It was the perfect accompaniment to today’s blustering storm.

The Gothic intrigue is strong right from the get-go & carries through the entire story. Despite having never been to Whitby, I fell in love with the location as a child & always enjoy getting to return there through fiction. Plus, there’s a fun Bram Stoker & Dracula cameo, but it isn’t too spooky or creepy. Instead, the story reminded me of Jane Eyre, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Jaime Jo Wright’s books.

James & Rosa were lovely — the mysterious baronet & the bookish librarian. The way their stories intertwined & the progression of their relationship were beautifully done. And I loved the hint of the “fake relationship” trope.

With heart-stirring faith themes, Griep paints a poignant picture of true love and friendship while learning to trust amid the hurts & harms of superstition and gossip.

Book Blurb ; * England, 1890. Vampires are alive and well in North Yorkshire, leastwise in the minds of the uneducated. Librarian Rosa Edwards intends to drive a stake through the heart of such superstitions. But gossip flies when the mysterious Sir James Morgan returns to his shadowy manor. The townsfolk say he is cursed.
James hates everything about England. The weather. The rumors. The scorn. Yet he must stay. His mother is dying of a disease for which he’s desperately trying to find a cure—an illness that will eventually take his own life.
When Rosa sets out to prove the dark gossip about James is wrong, she discovers more questions than answers. How can she accept what she can’t explain—especially the strong allure of the enigmatic man? James must battle a town steeped in fear as well as the unsettling attraction he feels for the no-nonsense librarian. Can love prevail in a town filled with fear and doubt?*

The 2nd in the series Of Monsters and Men. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! This book had themes of Dracula like the first in the series had for Frankenstein.
With the arrival of James brings the whole town into a upheaval, everyone pointing fingers and superstitions at him. When Rosa meets him for the first time she finds him to be mysterious but caring. The romance is wonderful. They have an instant connection but its not merely because of each others looks. They both have a sacrificial love towards each other that was so refreshing.

And the faith content!!! They both prayed multiple times including surrendering their lives to God. And both James and Rosa have people who speak faith and hope into their lives. The theme of the hearts of men; no one truly knows what's in someone's heart until you get to know them. James is being reviled because of rumors while there is someone else with a dark heart and intent, who is thought well of. Only God knows the thoughts and intents of the hearts of men.

Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

A perfect read for the fall season but especially October!

I love a tall, dark, brooding love interest who is more than he seems and is misunderstood except by the leading lady--that is Sir James Morgan to a t!

The atmosphere is particularly potent in this book- you feel the chill in the air and the fog! I thought it was so interesting how Griep created a "real world" that had parallels to the classic tale of Dracula and seemingly had influence on Bram Stokers novel-- Stoker is even a character in this novel and asks Sir James for his input on Transylvania.

I LOVE historical notes and the one in this book is no exception to me--how she pulled elements from the Dracula novel and realblife events/places/people to create an all-new tale. I listened to the audiobook so while I was listening, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter were confusing and took me put of the story, but it was interesting that the Historical note explains they are lines from Dracula.

Come on… Was there any doubt that this would be terrific?! Along with Ms. Griep’s first in her gothic Of Monsters and Men series, Lost in Darkness—a Frankenstein inspired historical romance—Man of Shadow and Mist touches upon the old legends of monsters who walk among us, striking fear in our hearts on dark and stormy nights. This one, however, is a terrific play on the original Dracula story. Intriguingly, we see an actual Bram Stoker make brief appearances, allusions to Transylvania, and even a brief Van Helsing reference that helps nail down the story and sets it firmly in our minds as a Dracula story. And it is a wonderfully crafted story that weaves together themes of faith and forgiveness, redemption and second chances. Not something most would expect in a novel about a man most accuse of being a bloodthirsty vampire! And everything you’d expect from such an accomplished and skillful author like Michelle Griep. I can only wonder what monster we might see next. The Mummy? The Werewolf? The Invisible Man? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Highly recommended!

Set in England, 1890, a superstitious community believes the legends about vampires. Rosa works at her father's lending library and seeks to help educate the community, believing that more knowledge will help dispel their superstitious tendencies. When Sir James returns, the animosity stirs up as the folklore about vampires involves his family.

The story isn't gruesome, James' family suffers from a blood disease that he's seeking to cure with herbs. It's an interesting opportunity to reflect on the powerful pull of public opinion, Also raises the question of how to persevere in faith when God's people have betrayed you. I enjoyed it!

“She really ought to pedal onward and get back to the library, but there was such raw power in the way he moved that it mesmerized her like little else she had known. She watched his tall form until shadows and mist swallowed him whole, leaving her entirely unsettled.”

Absolutely loved this second book in the Of Monsters and Men series! I have to admit Dracula is one of my favorite “horror” stories and Michelle Griep brilliantly took the idea of a vampire and turned it on its head. She created a character so sympathetic and tortured that he instantly drew my compassion. It’s the story of a troubled man trying to find a cure for the life threatening illness he faces which also plagues his mother, all the while resisting love and warding off villagers bent on his destruction.

Sir James Morgan traveled to Whitby, England from his castle in Transylvania to care for his mother who suffers from porphyria. After rescuing a beautiful woman after a bicycle accident, he’s pleasantly surprised to find she works in her father’s library where he’s hoping to find medical texts. As he desperately searches for a cure, he can’t help but fall in love with Rosa. Knowing the outcome of the disease, he resists anything more than friendship and keeps himself shuttered away from others. The strange symptoms of the disease, the cattle found mutilated, and the superstitious nature of the townsfolk foster the idea that Sir James is indeed a dreaded vampire.

Rosa Edwards is a forward thinking librarian studying to be a secretary. She wants nothing more than to share books and knowledge with her small English village to help combat superstitions. Though many can’t afford the subscription, she finds ways to provide books. When she meets James, he has a profound effect on her. As she tries to discourage a persistent suitor, she wants nothing more than to get to know the mysterious stranger better. James is elusive, yet always seems to be there when she needs him. If she can only get him to trust her, and take a chance on love.

I loved everything about this story! The atmosphere was fantastic with an eerie manor, freakish thunderstorms, and fog shrouded streets. The romance between Rosa and James was electric with a passionate undercurrent throughout. Their first kiss was amazing! I loved how he tried to scare her off at times by playing the vampire role. I so sympathized with James. He wanted nothing more than what he felt was best for Rosa, yet he yearned for love and acceptance. I loved the kind rector who helped convince James he needed the companionship of others.

All the nods to Dracula were fabulous. I enjoyed the way the author weaved Bram Stoker into the story and the little Easter eggs pointing to the classic novel. I loved that James’ butler was named Renfield and chuckled every time I saw his name. It was fascinating learning more about porphyria and how the symptoms matched so well with the concept of a vampire.

It’s a fast paced, perfectly gothic romance, with a touch of inspiration and suspense. Highly recommend to gothic and historical romance fans as well as those who enjoy the classics. I can’t wait to see which “monster” she’ll tackle next, although I have a theory. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

I am a HUGE fan of Michelle Griep. In fact, I'll get to meet her at the Mississippi River Readers Retreat later this month, and I guarantee there'll be some major fan-girling going on! All that to say that I love her books, but I think her Of Monsters and Men books are my favorites.

I've never read Dracula before, but I definitely want to now. I did NOT want to put this book down. And when I DID have to do something else, I was thinking of these characters the entire time (sitting in church, you are NOT supposed to think about the local "vampire"!).

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book. Just make sure you're done with it before Sunday.

If you enjoy historical fiction combined with elements of beloved classics, be sure to add Michelle Griep’s Of Monsters and Men series to your TBR! Loved it!!! To the point of actually ignoring my chores on a beautiful spring Saturday. I could not put it down!

Man of Shadow and Mist is brilliantly written. Michelle Griep’s take on the origins of Dracula and Bram Stoker is so creative! It plays a small part of the story of a misjudged and mistreated man from Transylvania who returns to England to care for his dying mother.

Set in England in 1890, this small town and superstitious community believes in the lore about vampires. Librarian Rosa Edwards tries to dispel such superstitions. "But gossip flies when the mysterious Sir James Morgan returns to his shadowy manor. " The author does a splendid job creating the atmosphere and attitudes of the time. From the very beginning, the reader feels immersed and invested in this captivating story! A thread of mystery weaves through this story as well.

A wonderful and inspirational gothic tale full of truth and superstitions, light and darkness, and, right or wrong how easy it is to follow the crowd. A sweet friendship, and a beautiful faith journey, especially learning to trust in God, play a role in the lives of both Rosa and Sir James.

A self-sacrificing hero and the spunky no-nonsense heroine had me charmed from the start! I highly recommend Man of Shadow and Mist!

If you’re in the mood for a good case of the shivers, grab this Gothic romance! A mix of Beauty and the Beast, Dracula, and Michelle Griep’s unusual historical research, this story cost me several nights’ sleep. Madness, superstition, persecution, even bad weather, for goodness sake! - so why couldn’t I put it down? A satisfying blend of honest emotions and Biblical faith fueled my reading toward a hoped-for happy ending. Did I reach it? Find out for yourself in this second book of the “Monsters and Men” series. “…the world seems full of good men— even if there are monsters in it.” -Bram Stoker, Dracula

Loved it and highly recommend it. This was mysterious, with a well put together historical story. It was realistic about the characters and problems of the time. I love MG writing and her books just keeps getting better. I always love a strong heroine and honorable hero and this had both. The Christian side of this was light and hopeful and I enjoyed that part very much. And of course I got my HEA.

This was not what I expected, but that is honestly not a bad thing! Oftentimes I expect Christian romance to be light and fluffy, focused on making the relationship work, navigating society expectations, etc. I think is the first Christian romance I have read that feels gothic, and it just made me so giddy inside. Honestly, I was hooked and stayed up late one night to continue reading. It was a fun twist on the historical happenings when Bram Stoker was alive and writing Dracula, and he even makes an appearance! It also had a wonderful educational element of what people with rare disease went through in the past, when superstition ruled minds and formal education was not that common in rural areas. So while it starts off making you question if this is the first Christian romance with a vampire, not to worry - there are no vampires here, only a family with secrets and a young librarian determined to help.

The town has only heard rumors of the Romanian family who moved into Morgrave Manor, but they suspect they are of evil intent. After all, the mother brought cartons of earth with her on the long voyage to England, and the son will only go outside when the sun is away...or else he bundles up so much that all you can see are parts of his face. Surely, they are either cursed or at work with the devil. And when animals start being found brutally killed and drained of blood, it's not long before minds make the leap to the obvious conclusion - vampires are among us! Rosa Edwards knows this is nonsense, of course. If only her father would allow their library to be free, so that the local poor can become educated and realize not everything left unexplained is evil. When she collides with Sir James Morgan, literally, she is stunned by his handsome visage, and it's not long before she is making regular trips to his home to deliver books. He tries desperately to keep her from forming an attachment, knowing that nothing can come from their association, but Rosa can only follow her heart. When James is accused of a heinous crime, it's the ultimate test of Rosa's love...and whether or not their relationship can blossom when it's barely even begun.

I just adored both of these characters so much. James had a traumatic life, being condemned for a medical condition that would later be identified as porphyria, and he kept away from other people as much as he could. All the while, he tried to cure his mother of the same condition, thinking that her cure would also be his when he got older and began to suffer the same madness she did. Rosa, God bless her, was so patient and kind towards him, pushing a little but still allowing him space to become comfortable with making a friend. She wouldn't let him hide himself away from her, and her persistence eventually gave way to sparks between them. She struggled as well, hoping for a life beyond her little town as a secretary, but with her mother pushing marriage and her father not seeing the point in her leaving, it felt like a dream that would never come true. James changed all of that by believing in her and supporting her, even when he thought she could never be his. He risked himself for her several times, and she did for him as well, which made their romance so beautiful. They saw each other, truly saw who they were on the inside, and it felt like a genuine portrayal of soulmates.

I am surprised this is the second book in the series, since I have no idea how I missed the first! That will be rectified as soon as possible. If you like gothic romance and sweet soulmates, you'll love this book.

Growing up, I had a weird fascination with vampires. It’s embarrassing, looking back, but the lure made me curious. I never understood why these victims were so easily drawn toward the vampires to make themselves the prey. But from the very start of Man of Shadow and Mist I was hooked with that same unexplainable allure.

Sir James Morgan is this tortured soul who holds onto a dim form of hope for his ailing mother. I can’t quite explain why—but you love him from the start. And despite his lifetime circumstances and the “curse” on his family, Sir James’s attitude toward God is one of complete submission. James’s faith doesn’t require God to answer his prayers in the fashion James wants—but he trusts in the sovereignty of God—even if it is James’s downfall. This is shown time and time again through the story. And I love that it’s included. Because God doesn’t always work the way we expect—or want—Him to. Often times He doesn’t, because He’s God and He knows better.

Rosa Edwards proves herself to be a lovable little librarian from the start. She has a quick tongue and is very outspoken for a woman—especially during those times. She’s not afraid to speak against the folklore surrounding Sir James Morgan’s family. On multiple occasions she comes to James’s defense in front of the townspeople despite how it looks to the gossips of town.

The chemistry between Rosa and James was palpable and so sweet. Their friendship develops over time and grows into deeper feelings. And I love that it’s not rushed despite their obvious physical attraction.

Bram Stoker is an Easter egg that keeps popping up and I thought it was such a clever way to tie him into the story. And hearing the ending historical notes made that Easter egg even more exciting.

There wasn’t a thing about this story I’d change. The characters were amazing—including the side characters who had some great wisdom to share. The ending wrapped up the story in a neat little bow and I loved how all of the pieces and characters fit together to bring about the happily ever after.

Jump into this intriguing Gothic novel that’s keeps readers guessing as to what is true and how the twisted tale will turn out. Could the elusive baron actually be a vampire? Can the determined young librarian sweep away the superstitions of the local citizens through education? In this story, books do play an important role—something I heartily appreciate. Woven along within the compelling narrative we find scenes that include the author Bram Stoker (a real person, as we know). This adds to the mysterious elements flowing throughout. The author did a great job creating the uneasy atmosphere and peopling it with authentic characters that motivate our empathy as they traverse the hazardous plot. Throw in an enemy that you want to hate but eventually come to respect, and it continues to tug at the emotions. I’m thankful to the author for sending me a copy after the first book disappeared in the mail—another mystery. All opinions are my own.

I love the preacher’s godly wisdom. Here’s a quote: “Please take what I said to heart. Shutting yourself away doesn’t solve your problems. It only magnifies them. God brings people into our lives to walk beside us through our troubles, yet we are the ones who must open the door and let them in.”
