Welcome to our Summer seasonal read-a-thon. This read-a-thon runs from June 21 - September 22, 2023

For every book that you read with a title starting with one of the letters in the bonus word give yourself 1 point, if any section (first, middle, last) of the author's name starts with a letter in the bonus word give yourself 2 points. The most you can have for any one book is 3 bonus points, 1 for title and 2 for author.

For example (if WINTER were our bonus word):

Nothing Lasts Forever by Sidney Sheldon = 1 point for title
OR
Fire in the Blood by Dale Ibitz = 2 bonus points for author last name
OR
Winter Swans by Danica Winters = 1 point for title, 2 points for author = 3 bonus points

Be sure to tally your pages and bonus points separately. The top 3 people with the most bonus points at the end of the challenge will get to choose a bonus word for the next quarter. NOTE: Bonus point winners cannot win in two read-a-thon's in a row, to give more people the chance to choose bonus words.

Hi! Can somebody explain how this stuff with the bonus word works exactly? Where or when do we find out about the word? Is it just one word for the whole read-a-thon or will there be multiple?

Hi Yasmine,

When the 3 winners from the Spring Read-a-thon reply to my messages, they will pick the bonus words for the Summer Read-a-thon. I give them a couple days to pick one. In this case, hopefully, I will have all three words by tomorrow. I need to get the winners a few days to pick their word. You will pick just one of the three words to use for the entire season.

The goal is to achieve the most bonus points. Let's say that the word I picked is spring. In order to gain points, we look at the first letter of the title and the first letter of first name of the author and the last name of the author.

Let's say I just finished the book Ithaca by Claire North

The letter "I" in Ithaca is in the word spring, and the author's last name fits because of "N" in North. For the title, I would get 1 point, for the Author, I would get 2 points, for a total of 3 points. 3 points is the most one can achieve for a book.

I also just finished Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I would not get any points for the title; however, I will get 2 points for "R" in Rebecca.

For those two books, you would get 5 points.

Does that make sense, or did I make it more confusing?
