I started thinking about books I love, but when I thought a lot about the couple at the center, I thought "Nope!" (There are some spoilers for classic books here, but they're books where most people know what happened, I've capitalized the book titles so that you have a chance to run away before reading the spoilers.)

I love REBECCA, but Maxim de Winter is a confessed killer and I don't know that I believe his story that's supposed to make shooting his wife okay, and I liked the second Mrs. De Winter less when she responded to the news of the murder by being thrilled to learn that he never loved Rebecca. Then she went to work helping him get away with murder. Great book, but the couple at its heart have more than a little darkness at their hearts.

Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler have all the chemistry in the world, but the whole point of GONE WITH THE WIND is that neither of them are very nice people.

Jane Eyre is so in love with her Rochester that she doesn't seem to mind that he yells at her regularly, insults her piano playing, disguises himself as a fortune teller to mess with her mind, and oh yeah...he locks his last wife up in the attic and tries to fool Jane into helping him commit bigamy. What a prince!

Compared to all of those romantic heroes and heroines, I'm going to have to go with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth is a loving sister and daughter, and she doesn't throw herself at Mr. Darcy just because he's a good-looking man with a fortune who is in want of a wife. Mr. Darcy is prickly enough and his behavior looks a good deal like Mr. Rochester's in the early part of the book, but he showed his true self when he went out of his way to help Elizabeth's impulsive sister. He also is able to see Elizabeth's worth, despite her poverty and her willingness to scold him for his pride. I think they both deserved their happy ending.(less)

Lots of Florida appearances coming up

I've been in blog-silence for months, finishing Rituals and doing family stuff, but I have a bunch of talks scheduled and I'm emerging from silence to let you all know about them.  If you're within striking distance of the Florida peninsula, there's a good chance that I'll be speaking soon at a library or bookstore near you.  I love it when my readers come out.  I write for you, and I like to see Read more of this blog post »

“Faye laughed as her naive belief that the world ever made sense, but what better definition of a scientist could there be than 'a person looking for a way to make sense of the world'?”

“Historic American Buildings Survey—HABS for short—was one of FDR’s greatest New Deal investments. Jobless folk fanned out across the country, seeking old buildings, photographing them and sketching their floor plans. Many of the structures they recorded in the 1930s were caught in the act of falling down. Some of them were documented in no other place.”

Mary Evans Good to see you, too, Kris. I'll be in Arizona next year when my new grandbaby is born. Maybe we'll see each other then.
