My computer Isn't working right now, so no list. I've only read one book on Popsugar.

message 718: by Jacqie (new)

Jacqie This is a topic that interested me and I didn't have a great place to put it, so I'm trying it here. So, I'm down to my last few books, and I thought it would be interesting to see what I left until last and why. Right now, I have eight categories left. They are:

1. An Afrofuturist book. I'm not sure why this one is so difficult. Science fiction is my preferred genre, but I'm just not finding anything I want to read. I did try reading The Galaxy Game by Karen Lord in February but I bounced off that one so hard and fast that I didn't feel right counting it. But I've either read it (N.K. Jemisin, P.Djeli Clark, Tochi Onyebuchi, Octavia Butler, Nnedi Okorafor, Tomi Adeyemi, Nalo Hopkinson) or it just doesn't make me want to pick it up. So- I might end up reading the sequel to Parable of the Sower.

2. A Locked Room Mystery. This is sort of an annoying prompt, because you have to be at least a little bit spoiled going into the book if you know that it's a locked room mystery. I belong to a mystery book club and not one book we've read this year qualifies. I have it on good authority that The Album of Dr Moreau is a locked room mystery, so I'm planning to read it.

3. A book with a Black and White cover. I was originally planning to read A Promised Land by Barack Obama for this book but I was having problems gearing myself up to read an almost 800 page memoir (not my normal genre) and I think I've been fooling myself. I do want to read it, but I need more brain space and time than I've had available. I think I may end up reading Revelator by Daryl Gregory for this one, in October because it is supposed to be creepy. It's not a perfect all black-white cover, but the text is the only color so I'm going to use it.

4. A book by a Muslim American author. This one I'm sort of saving on purpose because I'm hoping to go on a trip to the Middle East at the end of the year and I like to read books about regions that I travel to.

5. A book about a Subject that You are Passionate About. I could probably have done this prompt by now but I want to do a cookbook review and I have never done a review of that particular sort of book before so I'm kind of hovering.

6. A book with an Oxymoron in the title. I'm planning to read A Bitter Feast for this and just haven't gotten to it yet, no real problem there. I like reading mysteries and horror in October so it will probably be then.

7. Book on my TBR with the ugliest cover. This is sort of a mean prompt and I've been wavering on what to choose. It's going to end up being The Mermaid of Black Conch.

8. DNF book from my TBR. This is also a prompt I hated- I don't finish books for a reason. I've decided to try Piranesi again because I'm in a distinct minority for not liking it and it's a pretty short book.

So, some book has to be last. Three of these books I just haven't gotten to yet. Five of them are prompts that I've found difficult or annoying. Which have been the most difficult for you to fill?

Jennifer | 4 comments First post as I'm struggling and what better way to keep going than to count the categories I've finished, right? My personal rules are no double dipping within a challenge. I'm also doing the Reading Women and Reading Harder ones and there's definitely crossover between these. I love these challenges, they keep my reading diverse and material that I won't have picked up otherwise. The limiting factor most often is what my public library has available on Kindle. And apparently, my flagging reading capacity, come November.
