This is usually when my work pressures are too heavy or I'm sad or something has happened to make it difficult for me to focus. When that happens, I'm kind to myself. If I need to rest, I rest. I play games, watch films or read books that inspire me. I make an effort to do something that's different from my routine. Sometimes, all I can manage is a page a day. Or hells, let's face it, sometimes merely a 100 words a day. But I try to write a little bit every day, even if I'm not feeling it. The point is I try, and that's what's important. Those little bursts of writing *do* add up. Being an author is not a race. It's a calling.(less)
Nerine Dorman At present, Thedas. Yes, yes, yes, I know it's a book world based on a video game but it's one I've fallen in love with.

A Shadow in Summer (Long Price Quartet #1) by Daniel Abraham

A Shadow in Summer by Daniel Abraham is one of those fantasy novels that are difficult to quantify in brief review. It's also an incredibly textured, layered story that peels away gradually, and stylistically clearly has its roots in an Asian-inspired setting.

The heart of the story is that poets control gods, otherwise known as andats, who are bound to do their bidding. The andat of the city... Read more of this blog post »

Emily Brontë
“I have dreamt in my life, dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they have gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind. And this is one: I'm going to tell it - but take care not to smile at any part of it.”
Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

Paul Bowles
“Death is always on the way, but the fact that you don't know when it will arrive seems to take away from the finiteness of life. It's that terrible precision that we hate so much. But because we don't know, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.”
Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

H.P. Lovecraft
“The sea can bind us to her many moods, whispering to us by the subtle token of a shadow or a gleam upon the waves, and hinting in these ways of her mournfulness or rejoicing. Always she is remembering old things, and these memories, though we may not grasp them, are imparted to us, so that we share her gaiety or remorse.”
H.P. Lovecraft

Storm Constantine
“Being a child is such a shining gift, yet we don't know how precious it is until it's worn out and gone away.”
Storm Constantine, Thin Air

Caitlín R. Kiernan
“What makes us brave isn't lacking the good sense to be afraid; it's looking back at what we've lived through and seeing if we faced it well.”
Caitlín R. Kiernan, Gothic!: Ten Original Dark Tales
