A book published by an indie press Song of the Shank, published by Graywolf Press Poverty Creek Journal by Thomas Gardner, Tupelo Pr

A book by or about someone who identifies as LGBTQ The Testament of Mary, by Colm Tóibín I’m making changes in my reading life, to help me deal with the challenge. I had picked another novel by Tóibín, but opted for this one because it was 85 pages long. Wonderful book, though.

A book by a person whose gender is different from your own The Hearts of Horses, by Molly Gloss

A book that takes place in Asia The Kite Runner & And the Mountains Echoed Yes, I know, the characters move around, not everything happens in Afghanistan. But I say: these characters all take Afghanistan with them.

A book by an author from Africa -
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu

A book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture

A microhistory Stay : A History of Suicide and the Philosophies Against It. Microhistories don’t have to be about little things like salt and pepper shakers.

A YA novel I think I’m going to read 3 or 4 of these, actually, so maybe I’ll just read 1 book in some of the other categories.

An SF novel

A romance novel

A National Book Award, Man Booker Prize, or Pulitzer Prize winner from the last decade - cheating on this, reading God, a Biography, by Jack Miles, which won the Pulitzer 10 years too early. I'll read another prize-winner, though, since I've doubled up my goal.

A book that is a retelling of a classic story I already know that I’m going to twist this one.

An audiobook Hello? Doesn’t everyone understand that listening to a book while driving is just as dangerous as texting while driving? I don’t have hard data to back that up, just personal near-accident experience. I’ll listen to my audiobooks while washing dishes. OKAY I LIED, I'M LISTENING TO POEMS BY JOHN KEATS WHILE I'M AT THE WHEEL. BEWARE.

A collection of poetry - Who Said by Jennifer Michael Hecht

A book that someone else has recommended to you This one is presenting a problem. I asked my friend Rick to recommend something, and he keeps coming up with stuff the library doesn’t own, which is of no help.

A book that was originally published in another language

A graphic novel, a graphic memoir, or a collection of comics of any kind - planning to read Justice League 3000.

A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure I can’t stop reading Lament of the Dead: Psychology After Jung’s Red Book, by Sonu Shamdasani and the late James Hillman, even though I’m afraid I won’t get a blog post out of it. Reading something unbloggable is totally against my work ethic. Janet Malcolm’s In the Freud Archives was just as compulsive a reading experience. I think I might work it into a blog post, but I had read it before, a long time ago, so it doesn’t belong on this challenge list at all. Mea culpa.

A book published before 1850

A book published this year Phooey. Rachel Cusk’s novel Outline, which I’m reading, is copyrighted 2014. Thought it was 2015. Back into the request queue with that one.

Alison | 3 comments Just starting on this challenge now...I read quite a range already so I have already met many of these challenges but a few are pretty far from what I go for so we will see.

19/24 Categories completed...not bad since I am just starting the challenge now!

COMPLETED A book written by someone when they were under the age of 25...Laughing at My Nightmare by Shane Burclaw. Interesting book by a severely disabled young man who is a popular bloggist. Focuses on using humor to deal with life challenges

COMPLETED A book written by someone when they were over the age of 65..A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler. Loved this book!

COMPLETED A collection of short stories...Fortune Smiles. Hated it but I finished it.

COMPLETED A book published by an indie press...Painted Faces by L.H.Cosway (off beat romance between a cross dressing performer and a baker...I really enjoyed this book but thought book 2 which is from the guys POV was truly awful),

COMPLETED A book by or about someone that identifies as LGBTQ...Lover's at the Chameleon Club and Paying Guests both fit this category. Lover's at the Chameleon Club is a fabulous read and a really interesting story that crossed between fiction and non-fiction.

COMPLETED A book by a person whose gender is different from your own 10:04 by Ben Lerner (awesome book)

A book that takes place in Asia

COMPLETED A book by an author from Africa We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo. Fantastic book.

A book that is by or about someone from an indigenous culture (Native Americans, Aboriginals, etc.) I am going to finally finish Round House which I abandoned a long time ago...don't love it but I want to know how it finishes (planned)

COMPLETED A microhistory Green Glass Sea. This one is a stretch because it is fiction and a kids book but it focuses on the world of Los Alamos for the scientists secretly building the nuclear bomb. I am calling it close enough because this category just doesn't interest me at all.

COMPLETED A YA novel We Were Liars (This was just 'eh for me. Mostly I found it self indulgent and whiny). eta...The Impossible Knife of Memory would also work for this category and was really an excellent read, IMO.

COMPLETED A sci-fi novel We Free Men by Prattcet...though this may be more fantasy. I have a hard time figuring out what fits in this genre. Martian in on my list to read and that may fit this genre better

COMPLETED A romance novel Gone by Deborah Bladon (totally could be in the guilty pleasures category as well. Fast, junky but fun!

COMPLETED A National Book Award, Man Booker Prize or Pulitzer Prize winner from the last decade Redeployment and Gilead both meet this criteria. Redeployment was a very interesting read. Gilead bored me through much of it.

COMPLETED A book that is a retelling of a classic story Fairest by Marissa Meyers

COMPLETED An audiobook Cuckoo's Calling. I really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to listening to or reading book 2.

A collection of poetry not sure yet...

COMPLETED A book that someone else has recommended to you Invention of Wings by Susan Monk Kid (This one was just OK for me. I found it quite predictable and not at all unique. Still, a touching story.

COMPLETED A book that was originally published in another language Memories of my Melancholy Wholes by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

COMPLETED A graphic novel, a graphic memoir or a collection of comics of any kind Let's Talk about Something More Pleasant by Roz Chast. Nicely done book about dealing with aging parents.

COMPLETED A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure Naked in Death by J.D. Robb

A book published before 1850 not sure on this one...I may try Wuthering Heights again..it barely makes this deadline.

COMPLETED A book published this year A Girl on the Train Suspense isn't my favorite genre but definitely an engaging read.

A self-improvement book This one is way outside out my interest but I will find something!

hi mj,
i tried to put down as completed task 15 after reading the sleeper and the spindle by gaiman. "leanne" already put it in the bookshelf of task 15, but how do i communicate that i read it and completed task 15?
thanks for your help!

Mj | 32 comments Hi steph,

What I do to let people know my status is:

1. Go back to my original plan list on file, enter edit, and then beside the task in question, add completed, the date and the name of the book and author.

2. Like you I enter the book on the book shelf and if it's already there, I add a new book shelf if I've chosen it for a different task. I also edit the book and add a comment about why we're reading it (or why I'm reading it in this case) to give people some info on the book.

3. I also go to Book Riots - Discussions, then Task Ideas/Discussions/Resources and then look for the Book Riot Task Number you just complete. I think you're asking about Task 15 - A Retelling of a Classic. There you would post what you just read for this topic - the book and the author and what you thought about it if you like.

4. Some people also post in another place. I don't. For example if Book Riots Number was Task 15 and it is the 6th Book you have read or the 6th Task you have completed - they add to Sixth Task Completed Discussion Group which can also be found under Discussions but then under General i.e. different from above. I don't do this because it seems to create a hodge podge of all kind of books since everyone completes the task in different orders. Also I think I accomplish my reading accomplishment status by updating how I am doing in completing my 24 tasks.

It is really what people want to do. There seems to be no hard and fast rules. I think you could add a comment in your 15th Book Riots task completed, that it was the 6th of the 24 tasks you completed if you want to add that and that would save you posting in a whole new discussion group.

But like I said it's basically whatever suits you.

Please feel to ask again if you have other questions that I can assist with.

Looks like you're a Gaiman fan as are many others. He's not someone I've read but someone I've thought about trying even though it's outside of my typical genres.

Happy Reading!

Mj | 32 comments It's really all about you - how much you want to share or get ideas from other people on book choices and how it is you would like to keep track of your own accomplishments.

Like I said it seems to be up to each individual. Like you, I'm just a reader who took up the challenge and what I am choosing to do. I thought the book shelves would be a good idea if people wanted to use them....but that too is optional.

Lots of fun.

This book is set in New Mexico, where the Master Vampire of the City of Albuquerque is Aztec, and the bad guy is an Aztec bugaboo. I didn't read this book with the intention of counting it for this task, but once I finished it, and after reading a few more books in the series, it occurred to me that an Aztec character is pretty representative of an indigenous culture. ;-)

I can't remember where I received the recommendation to read this book. I thought I did, but I can't now find it. :'( I do know I received the recommendation after writing somewhere that I enjoyed either The Book Thief or The Shadow of the Wind. I also think I first heard about this book from Book Riot, so that counts as a second (or first) recommendation to read it. ;-)

20) A graphic novel, a graphic memoir or a collection of comics of any kind

21) A book that you would consider a guilty pleasure
Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. Finished July 2, 2015, ★★★★★.
I consider the first 22 books of the Anita Blake series to be a guilty pleasure, as I've read them all before. From July 1 to August 4 I read all 24 books in the series, and only the 23rd and 24th were new-to-me. I'm pretty sure I've read Guilty Pleasures over 30 times, so reading it again is always a "guilty pleasure" for me. Plus, I like the ides of my guilty pleasure-book being called Guilty Pleasures. ;-)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (first published in 1813). Finished 06/05/2015, ★★★★★

23) A book published this year

24) A self-improvement book (can be traditionally or non-traditionally considered “self-improvement”)
Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski. Finished 08/12/2015, ★★★½.
This book has some great and super information in it! I didn't read it to get help with any issues in my life, but it was still very relevant for me. :-)
