Sha | 1522 comments Welp. I'm going to try Shadow of What Was Lost sometime later. It's not that it wasn't interesting but I don't think I was in the mood.

I'm determined to finish Name of the Wind though.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Ditto in shadow of what was lost maybe we can group up for it sometime later and read it if you want sha

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Also how are you finding name of the wind personally I thought it was good but way overhyped which ruined it for me

message 7: by Sha (last edited Oct 08, 2017 11:14AM) (new)

Sha | 1522 comments I honestly don't have an definite opinion on it right now? So many mixed feelings.

(view spoiler)

I am so confused by this book. I assume i'll sit down to write a review at the end so I can share my confusion with everyone else.

And um, that was probably longer than you expected an answer to be sorry but I AM SO CONFUSED.

message 8: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments That's interesting can't say I had problems like those then again it took me 6 months to finish it (don't ask had a lot of breaks) and when I finally finished it I thought I enjoyed it but it wasn't entirely perfect but it does get good so stay with it for a bit

I may need a lot of time for both of these books, as I have tried and failed to read them before. :D In other words, this is a bad idea but they are both books I want to read for some reason or another so...

//jumps off the cliff

I also have to read Oathbringer & Son of the Shadows in December... and fit them all into a month of internship... this will be a test of valor fun.

Saar The Book owl | 3100 comments @Sha: I know the desperate feeling to read particular books. A bit frustrating sometimes :p

I've started to read 2 books last week, but both I stopped of lack of interest. Maybe I'm loosing my reading mojo at the moment.

Brass bands will play for you, kings will listen to thy worthy counsel, and cadets will snap off smart salutes as you ride past.
But then you'll have to wear something like this all the livelong day...and this ain't even a full general...this is only an officer...hehehe...

Nice hat, @General. I'm sure it will look very fetching on yoooo!

Ok Sha I just found the grottiest thing...
So my eldest cousin..it was the first fluffy romance I had narrated to me...as in my cousin was 16 and I was I dunno 10/11? Was I?
Anyway...she had the book and she was telling the story and reading out the best parts...I still remember lying on a manky old blanket all awry and staring at the ceiling and not really seeing it bcuz #dreamyeyes and Sha I never never forgot the title of the book...
but what if I read it now and the spell is broken and it turns out to be an OTT piece of shit? Which is more than likely....
And now you BEHOLD...
my introduction to the world... my very first ever formula romance...which 😂 I've never actually read the damn thing...but I'm going to now. I just wanted to come here and take a deep breath first...I found the book after years and years and...it has been almost twenty years....
Glass Slippers and Unicorns by Carole Mortimer
End of poimtless story

message 30: by Sha (new)

Sha | 1522 comments I remember Carole Mortimer! I read her when I first started reading romance and I loved the books! And I understand what you mean- I have held off re-reading any of those books in case I hate them. One experience with my changed Judith McNaught opinions was enough- and McNaught is supposed to be one of the good writers.

...if i can find the book,
(to the tune of do you want to build a snowman)
d'you wanna do a buddy read?

message 31: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Were you able to find it? If so we can BR it right here and trust they will all blve us when we claim the BR bonus, right?
No point requesting a separate thred for a 150 pages piece of cheese that only two of us are reading.
Ok,so comsider this my opening post altho' I only read a chapter and so far it is screamingly eighties, luv. If you decide to BR it then (keep this in mind) + you canquickly catch up. If you can't find it, really you aren't missing the finest words put to paper bcuz it is....hoenslty, its only the nostalgia that's keeping me goin'.

CHAR TALK Heroine is extremely ditzy and unaware and virginal. Hero is alpha+ and of course this kind of heroine type would intensely irritate all the alphas + cause in betas the urge to protect. Completely spoiling this book for you (but not really bcuz hellloooo does anyone expect ANYthing else from the 80s formula?) of course there is a beta as the secondary love interest. And I have just reached the "list" the description of woman as X-rayed from head to toe by the sguardo maschile and by this I mean the male gaze...in Mulvey terms.
It is ruined somewhat by being filtered thru a woman's pen + the list always annoys me, when presented AS a list. Surely if the objectifying must be done for visualization purposes it can be worked into the text elsehow??
But you know exactly what I'm talking abt don't you Sha dahlin'? And nobody reads pulp for anything but guilty pleasure so I'm not taking the moral road here or anything...
Anything but ;-) aooooou!

Now here is some pampering for you, most agreeable Shadahlin' (really, your name just goes with the word Daaaaaaarlin' like it was made for)
HERE IS THE LIST SPOILER + *yerk*
(view spoiler)
O.O what am I getting you into?
Or rather what were you gettin yourself into purely for my sake? The words BUBBLY and ELFIN were used.
*double yerk*
So if you back out now I will completely understand. In fact,I typed out "the list" to pamper you by saving you from reading it.
Like I said, I have BEHELD thy May + it is only nostalgia and my cousinly memories that are keeping me going thru this.
I'm giving you an out, sweetz. I'm barring you from your own niceness. Take it. The Devil 😈 never deals twice. Too selfish.
Don't read it and then (secretly) hate me Shaaa...

EDIT TO ADD: Discussing romance at essay-length. This only happens with you...i'd apo for the essay length but know you can handle it + raise me...
Gtg now dahlin' I'm being nagged for being on the phone tooooo damn long....

message 32: by Sha (new)

Sha | 1522 comments T_T

I can't find it. I found a ton of other Mortimer books (HOW MANY DID SHE WRITE OMG) but no unicorns and glass slippers. Well there's another unicorn but it's elusive and there is no glass slipper in sight. Elusive as the Unicorn

Which is a shame. A SHAME. I would have really liked to read and cackle at the formula.

I've seen bust/waist/hip measurements used to describe the girl a few times. I mean, it's not that much worse than "perky breasts, tiny waist, slim hips" but it does make me sigh more for some reason.

the list always annoys me, when presented AS a list. Surely if the objectifying must be done for visualization purposes it can be worked into the text elsehow??
I know what you mean! The authors I like tend to spread the description out over a few chapters. Like "he looked into her full lips" on chapter 5 being the first mention of her lips. Or "his dazzling pectorals mesmerized her" in chapter 7. I mean, those are bad examples, but the point is- SPREAD out those descriptions. You are writing a romance. There is enough opportunity to have X gaze into Y's eyes and notice how long their lashes are.

Just because it's pulp it doesn't mean you have to do it badly. MAKE IT GOOD PULP.

OH MY GOD the author pulled out the "i see my reflection and must describe it in excruciating detail" narrative convenience. So old-school.

There's also "curls that refused to be tamed" T_T I forget how many times I've seen that used.

I am well aware of what I get into by picking up a romance. I am unafraid of the genre. Rightly wary, of course (as any sane person would be) but I have walked those deep dark woods and am familiar with the kind of monsters I may encounter there.

UNTAMED CURLS.

//going to go back to look for the book

saw you two discussing romances, couldn't help myself. do you two like contemporary romances?

i am a newbie to HR. have started Bridgertons last month. :)

Sha | 1522 comments Manju wrote: "do you two like contemporary romances? "

//makes confused hand motions
It depends on the romance for me? I find that many contemporaries (especially the Harlequins and M&Bs) tend to have sexual tension and "will they or won't they have sex" as the main conflict; which is something that is easily solvable in modern day [insert US/European/Canadian/Australian/NZ setting here]. I don't like those because the conflict is not a conflict it's two people being babies.

(In Historicals, the sexual tension is way more of a plot point because the sex has consequences. Also, so many of them are modeled of P&P that there is almost always banter. This is why I tend to gravitate towards them more.)

But, there is a new wave of contemporaries which are somewhat more inclined to emotional explorations? I recently read A Girl Like Her and I loved it because EMOTIONAL EXPLORATION. So yeah, it depends on the book.

Julia Quinn was one of my favourite authors for years. I remember the Bridgertons. Which book are you in? I assume you started with The Duke and I- any thoughts? //because I have some

LET US MAKE THIS A SUB-THREAD FOR ROMANCE DISCUSSIONS, because my buddy read tracker is defunct anyway. :D

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments why confusing hand motions? o.O

I enjoy romances after reading heavy fantasy. they're my escape on weekends.. and this year i have been reading more romance than any other genre... I don't pay much attention to publishers so I don't know what Harlequins and M&B stories revolve around. I mostly look upto rating of a book and the blurb... if that sound good to me, I just read it.

A girl like sounds good.. adding it to my to-read.

yes. Duke & I was my first HR. loved it, it had perfect ratio of romance, humor, and tension... I will read third book next week...

Have you read anything from Penny Reid or Mariana Zapata?

Sha | 1522 comments Manju wrote: "why confusing hand motions? o.O"

I usually do that to indicate inner confusion. Like when questions which require more detailed explanations pop up for example.

I think books 2 and 4 are my favourite Bridgerton books. Although I can't remember much about the Elise/Francesca/Gregory books so it may be an incorrect/outdated statement.

Quinn has a lot of good books. I would also suggest Jo Beverley, Elizabeth Hoyt, Possibly Celeste Bradley, Eloisa James, Grace Burrowes and Mary Balogh. My favourite is Courtney Milan, but that's more confused hand motions.

Harlequins and M&B stories revolve around
Those are (more or less) the most formulaic of formula romances. They are relatively small and embody all the cliches ever. The book Zaara is reading now is one of them, cliches being exacerbated because it was published in the 80s. Other publishers also do formula romance, but not to the degree and/or amount Harlequin and Mills&Boon does.

Have you read anything from Penny Reid or Mariana Zapata?
Ah, no. I tend to stay away from contemporary romances unless I get specific recommendations from somewhere, so I don't usually go searching for books. Can you give me your favourites so I can go and check them out?

message 39: by Em Lost In Books (new)

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments ah okay. I thought that confusion meant "i don't talk to her, what she's doing here..."

I liked Duke and I better than Viscount who loved me. I found first to be more funny and had good romance than it's successor.

Adding those author's to my journal to look for their books once am done with Bridgertons. :)

Looks like I have a lot to learn about HR. :(

Oh, yes. both those authors are my favorites. try The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and Neanderthal Seeks Human. both authors write beautifully and keep balance between romance and humor in their books.. :D Though Zapata's books are more of Slow burn romances..

message 40: by Sha (new)

Sha | 1522 comments Book 1 made me uncomfortable on re-reading because I have a fear of children and was not a fan of Daphne essentially forcing the not-in-his-right-mind hero (Simon? I forget his name) to impregnate her. I am glad it turned out okay, but the whole situation just made me feel a bit... twitchy. Book 2 has far less of a complex plot, I know. But the Bridgerton Pall Mall/Croquet scene is one of my favorite scenes from the entire series so that might have biased me towards liking it more.

I would gladly read a book which was simply the Bridgerton Pall Mall Archives. Gladly.

Looks like I have a lot to learn about HR. :(
Eh. You'll pick it up easily. And besides, what I say are opinions and not facts and you may have different interpretations. That's half the fun. :)

//adds books to to-do list
I like slow burns. There's more time for emotional explorations and frankly that's what I am here for.

I get what you mean, btw. I also use romances to combat the lethargy bought on by reading multiple heavy fantasies. It's good to switch genres between books- it stops your brain from going "NOOOOO NOT AGAIN."

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) | 2388 comments sorry, got busy and never came back here. :(

I really had hard time understanding Simon's infatuation with his father's hate of him. He should not have punished himself and least of all Daphne for what his father did. :/ Other than that I quite liked it. It was fun and hilarious at moments. Yes, I remember that Croquet scene was a delight to read. And again our hero was too much attached to his father. *eye-roll* In both books, I liked the heroines. they both were stern and doesn't submit easily.

that's so true. not two people read the same book.;) perhaps my favorites are your worst dream came true. :P

really? then you must read Zapata and Reid soon. both write slow burn. I have read Winnipeg, Kulti, From Lukov with Love, and Wait for It by Zapata and they're really very good. Only word of advice is not to read them back to back, they could be overwhelming as far as slow romances go... and Reid, she recently replaced Jim Butcher as my most read author. She is my go to author if I feel too exhausted after reading high fantasy. I have read almost everything by her and I keep rereading Love Hacked and Beard Science from time to time...

just remembered, try these too Making Faces and From Sand and Ash. not so much romance but I think you will like them as you like emotional books.

I have actually seen that happen a few times in this group. I guess because of the sheer variety of books we all read? I spent most of Malice grumbling, but others seemed to like it just fine.

Thank you for the recs. I will check them out. And I started Wait For It as soon as I finished Winnipeg and- you were right. Reading them back to back is not the best idea. But on the other hand, now that my romance sensibilities are on overload I can go back to my looming SFF pile.

There's supposed to be a new Dresden Files short story collection coming out this year. I miss the world, so I'm looking forward to it.

I can read fast if I really like the book. My proudest achievement is finishing Way of Kings within 24 hours. :) I really slow down when I get bored or uninterested, though. And I've grown pickier in my old age...

It's a really adorable book. And I really like that sex is not a focus and it's more about them liking and trusting each other more. It's sweet and it made me smile.

I will get back to your romance recs once I've had enough of SFF. //it's good to have options and new frontiers

it is. what i like about this book how slowly they explore this relationship. Aiden is not very expressive and Van thinks that it is just a deal for him. so it is how he make her realize that he cares. those were not some big expressions of "I love you" but small step to show that there is someone who cares for you.
