SECTION 1: Scavenger
READ: 14/14
✔1. The word ballet has a long journey from the Greek “ballizo,” to the Latin “ballo,” to the Italian “balletto,” and finally to the French “ballet.” No matter how you say it, the word means to jump about or to dance.
Read a book that takes place in France, Italy, or Greece OR read a book whose cover shows someone dancing or jumping.
The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie - Jennifer Ashley 12/17
✔2. Classical ballet as it is known today came about under Louis XIV, who himself had been an avid dancer in his youth. In 1661, Louis founded the Academie Royale de Danse which established standards for the art of dance and the certification of dance instructors. Read a book that takes place in a school of some kind OR read a book whose protagonist is a dancer, a teacher, or an instructor.
Possession - J.R. Ward (art teacher) 3/20
✔3. Traditionally a ballerina is defined as the principal female dancer of a ballet company who has some renown outside her own company. Ballerina in the true, formal sense is given to relatively few female dancers, somewhat similar to the title diva in opera. Read a book in which someone is an expert in their field OR a book in which someone acts like a diva OR read a book whose author initials can be found in BALLERINA.
Parasite - Mira Grant (scientist) 12/16
✔4. The “Corps de ballet” is the ensemble of a ballet company and does not contain any principals or soloists. Read a book in which the protagonist is part of some kind of team or group OR read a book with a character who is an “Average Joe” or always seems to just be part of the background.
Baby, Drive South - Stephanie Bond (group of single men looking for wives) 12/21
✔5. You might be wondering about the male dancers. The official term for a male ballet dancer is “Danseur,” or more infrequently “Ballerino.” Read a book whose title contains a “male” word in its title – i.e. king, prince, father, son OR a book written by a male author whose initials may be found in DANSEUR.
The Prince Who Loved Me - Karin Hawkins 6/25
BALLET TERMS (Just a few of many!)
✔6. If you’re at all familiar with ballet, you probably already know that there are five basic positions of feet on the floor. These basic five positions were set by Pierre Beauchamp (dance master of King Louis XIV) in the 17th century. Read any book that is the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth in a series OR read a book whose original publication year contains a 5 (Remember to tell us the year of publication).
Protecting What's His - Tessa Bailey 12/13
✔7. Pierre Beauchamp is also credited with bringing the barre into ballet work. The barre is a horizontal bar, approximately waist height that is used for ballet warm-up exercises. Ballet classes commonly begin at the barre, and generally half of the ballet class or session is spent at the barre. Read a book with a long, thin, cylindrical object on the cover – i.e. flagpole, banister, hose OR read a book with any wooden object on the cover (remember to post the cover).

✔8. Port de bras translates literally to “carriage of the arms” and is an exercise for the movement of the arms to different positions. While the movements are simple, a dancer usually must work hard to make the movements seem graceful, poised, and seamless. Read a book whose cover depicts a bare arm or arms (no sleeves please and at least one arm should be shown from shoulder to hand) OR read a book in which a character is described as graceful and poised.

✔9. Advanced ballerinas begin doing pointe work, which is the performance of steps while on the tips of their toes with the foot fully extended. Pointe shoes are a structurally reinforced type of ballet shoe designed specifically for this purpose. Wads of lamb’s wool are usually inserted into the toes of the pointe shoes to further protect the dancer’s toes. Read a book whose title contains a word with a ‘silent e’ at its end OR read a book whose cover shows someone’s toes OR a book with any type of shoe shown on the cover (may or may not be attached to a foot).

✔10. Fouetté, literally "whipped" is a term which indicates either a turn with a quick change in the direction of the working leg as it passes in front of or behind the supporting leg, or a quick whipping around of the body from one direction to another. The famous 32 continuous fouettés in the "Black Swan" Pas de Deux from Swan Lake are a bravura performance designed to express the strength and triumph of the character. Read a book with one or more plot twists OR read a book with an exceptionally strong character OR read a book with a swan or any other type of bird on the cover.
Bad Wolf - Nele Neuhaus 12/20
✔11. The Pas de deux, meaning "step of two" is a duet usually performed by a female and a male dancer. Read the second book in a series OR a read a book whose cover shows a male and a female OR a book in which two people act as a team to complete a task.

✔12. A long horizontal jump, starting from one leg and landing on the other is called a grand jeté or “split in the air.” It is most often done going forward and usually involves doing full leg splits in mid-air. Read a book which jumps back and forth between time periods OR read a book with any character who seems to have a split personality OR read a book whose title contains any word equivalent to 'grand' - i.e. big, large, spectacular.
Big Bad Beast - Shelly Laurenston 12/6
✔13. Rond de jambe means "leg circle.” Actually, rond de jambs are half-circles made by the pointed foot, returning through first position to repeat; creating the letter 'D' on the floor. Read a book whose title or author’s last name begin with a “D,” OR read a book with any circular object on the cover (should cover ~25% of the cover).

✔14. The classic ballet skirt, a tutu, is typically flat at waist or hip level, made of several layers of tulle netting or tarlatan. Classic Romantic tutus are longer. Read a book whose title contains repeated, sequential words OR read a book whose cover shows someone wearing a skirt of any type (this could include a man wearing a kilt).

CHALLENGE COMPLETE

Duration: September 1 - October 31, 2016
READ: 10/10
✔1. The first state to be admitted into the Union after the ratification of the constitution, Vermont entered the United States as its 14th state on March 4, 1791. Vermont’s name comes from the French, Verd Mont, the name the French explorer Samuel de Champlain gave its green mountains on his 1647 map. Its nickname is Green Mountain State. These names are apt, as three quarters of Vermont is covered by forests.
✒ Read a book with a mostly green cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a French character or set in France -or- read a book that has any two numbers from the following in its number of pages: 1, 4, 7, 9. (state the number of pages).
If the Slipper Fits - Olivia Drake (341 pages) 9/5

✔2. Much of what is now Vermont was settled by the French Colony of New France. France ceded the territory to Great Britain in 1763 after being defeated in the Seven Years War. For many years, the nearby colonies, especially the provinces of New Hampshire and New York, disputed control of the area. Settlers who held land titles granted by New York were opposed by the Green Mountain Boys militia, headed by Ethan Allen, which supported the settlers whose claims were based on grants from New Hampshire. Ultimately, those settlers prevailed in creating an independent state, the Vermont Republic. Founded in 1777 during the Revolutionary War, the republic lasted for fourteen years. While still an independent republic, Vermont abolished slavery becoming the first of the future United States to do so.
✒ Read a book with a militia in it (any non-military population fighting along with or instead of regular armed services will do; mention how the book fits) -or- read a book which deals with segregation, slavery or racism -or- read a book that spans at least seven years from start to finish (include prologue and/or epilogue if you wish).
Alien Tango - Gini Koch (aliens vs humans) 9/4

✔3. Vermont is the 45th largest state in the United States. The west bank of the Connecticut river forms its eastern border with New Hampshire, and Lake Champlain forms its western border with the state of New York. Vermont also shares a border with Massachusetts on the south and with Canada in the north. Vermont played an important geographical role in the Underground Railroad, helping refugee American slaves to flee to safety in Canada.
✒ Read a book with a large body of water on its cover (must be visible on the GR thumbnail, post the cover) -or- read book #4 or #5 of a series -or- read a book set in Canada.
Snow on the Bayou - Sandra Hill 9/30

✔4. The state flower of Vermont is the Red Clover. The state animal is a Morgan horse. Monarch is the state butterfly, and Sugar Maple is the state tree (Vermont produces more than 500,000 gallons of maple syrup every year). Hermit Thrush is the state bird. Freedom and Unity is the state’s motto. In 2015, Vermont adapted a Latin motto in addition to the previous, “Stella quarta decima fulgeat” (May the 14th star shine bright). In 2013, Vermonters were crowned the fifth happiest residents in the country, as well as put in the top five states for happiest Twitter users the same year.
✒ Read a book with an obvious night scene on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book that makes you happy -or- read a book in which the characters actively use modern communication devices and technology.
The Curse of the Wendigo - Rick Yancey 9/5

✔5. The capital of Vermont, Montpelier, is the smallest state capital in the country, with a population of under 9,000 people. Vermont’s state capitol building is one of very few capitals to be adorned by a gold dome. A statue of Ceres sits on top. It is the only capital in the United States that doesn’t have a McDonald’s restaurant. Vermont made it all the way to 1996 as one of the only states to still not have a Wal-Mart. Billboards are illegal in the state of Vermont and advertising along roadways is highly regulated. The first exception to Vermont’s no-billboards rule came when a hand painted mural advertising downtown Bellows Falls was allowed in 2008. This opened up the possibility for advertising as long as the signs are hand painted murals meant to support and endorse a downtown district.
✒ Read a book in which the main character is a mother or is pregnant -or- read a book set in a small town -or- read a book whose title is in gold letters (post the cover).
Born of Legend - Sherrilyn Kenyon (heroine is pregnant) 9/9

✔6. Rudyard Kipling invented the game of snow golf in Vermont by painting his golf balls red so that they were easier to find in the snow. Vermont takes a lot of pride in playing a crucial role in the history of snowboarding when former ski racer, Jake Burton, revolutionized the industry with designs that changed the face of the sport. Burton started off as a tiny snowboarding company based out of South Londonderry, but quickly exploded into the biggest snowboarding brand in the world. Burton designed the uniforms for the 2014 USA Olympic Snowboarding Team. Vermont is one of only two states in America to offer snowboarding as a varsity sport that comes with a state championship.
✒ Read a book in which a winter game is played (mention the game) -or- read a book which is set in a winter landscape (it *should snow or be very cold for most of the book) -or- read a book first published in 2014.
Thirty-One and a Half Regrets - Denise Grover Swank (pub Jan 2014) 9/23

✔7. Lake Champlain runs along almost the entire length of the border between Vermont and New York and is the sixth-largest interior body of water in the country. Only the five Great Lakes are bigger. In March of 1998, President Bill Clinton signed a bill that officially made Lake Champlain the sixth Great Lake, an action that was pursued by Senator Patrick Leahy. However, that status was rescinded just a few weeks later. Vermont legends claim to have their own Loch Ness monster, named Champ or Champy for its lake of residence. The legends date back to Native American tribes in the region. Both the Iroquois and the Abenaki spoke of such a creature. The Abenaki referred to it as "Tatoskok". Over the years, there have been over 300 reported sightings of Champ. An apocryphal quote attributed to Samuel de Champlain describes the creature as a “20-foot serpent thick as a barrel, and a head like a horse”.
✒ Read a book with a fictional animal present in the story (a dragon or a phoenix will do) -or- read a book set in one of the Great Lakes states (for the purpose of this task: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York; mention which one your book is set in) -or- read a book in which the first letters of all words of the title are in the word “Tatoskok”, 2 words minimum, count all words.
Dragonmark - Sherrilyn Kenyon (dragons) 9/3

✔8. The 30th president of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, was born in Plymouth, Vermont, and is the only president to be born on the fourth of July. Every year, a birthday celebration is held in his honor at his birthplace. The 21st president of the United States, Chester A. Arthur was also born in Vermont. Other famous Vermonters include the inventors John Deere and Elisha Otis, financial bigwig James Fisk (Diamond Jim), singer Rudy Vallee and religious leader Brigham Young.
✒ Read a book which includes 4th of July fireworks and/or parade -or- read a book in which the main character drives a tractor or rides an elevator -or- read a book from the List of Best LDS fiction.
Best Laid Plans - Allison Brennan (H/h stay at hotel and ride elevator) 9/2

✔9. One of America’s most famous icecreams began in Vermont, when Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield turned their childhood ice cream making dreams into reality in Burlington, Vermont on May 5, 1978. Today, Ben & Jerry’s is a subsidiary of Unilever, and its employees get three free pints of their beloved ice cream per day, every single day. They give their ice cream waste to farmers to feed their hogs (the hogs reportedly ate every flavor except Mint Oreo). There is also a real graveyard on a hill overlooking the Ben and Jerry factory in Waterbury, Vermont, complete with granite headstones and witty epitaphs for every flavor that has passed on to ice cream heaven. However, Ben & Jerry’s is not Vermont’s biggest employer. Technology giant IBM holds that honor.
✒ Read a book that has two of the following colors on the cover: green, black or white (the colors needn’t be predominant, but they should be visible on the thumbnail. Post the cover) -or- read a book with two people names in their title (like Amy & Isabelle or Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) -or- choose a flavor from this list of Dead & Buried Flavors, and read a book that you think fits the epitaph. Be as creative as you wish, but mention how the book fits.
The Isle of Blood - Rick Yancey 9/13

✔10. In Vermont, women must obtain written permission from their husbands (or fathers) to wear false teeth. It’s illegal (and also sort of impossible) to whistle underwater, to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole and to undress in public (but you can leave the house naked, if you so wish – 42 cyclists rode through Montpelier in the nude on May 14, 2009 without breaking any law).
✒ Read a book where a main character is a dentist or has to visit one for any reason -or- read a book with a giraffe in the story (bonus if it gets tethered to anything) -or- read a book in which a main character undresses in front of an audience for whatever reason; a one person audience is perfectly fine.
Brotherhood in Death - J.D. Robb (heroine undresses for hero) 9/29

It's the Great Pumpkin!
Duration: October 1 - December 31, 2016
READ: 15/15
✔1. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was the third Peanuts special, preceded only by A Charlie Brown Christmas and Charlie Brown's All-Stars.
✤ Read book #3 from any series (tell us the series) OR a book with a proper name in its title.
Chainsaw Jane - Marie-Jo Fortis 10/21
✔2. The music was performed by the Vince Guaraldi Sextet; original music was written by Vince Guaraldi as well.
✤ Read a book with a character who earns his/her living as a musician of some sort (tell us the job) OR a book by an author whose first or last name begins with V.
What a Ghoul Wants - Victoria Laurie 10/8
✔3. The show was first broadcast on October 27, 1966. After the first year, the show was re-aired annually on CBS until 2000. In 2001, it was picked up by ABC, which still shows this much-loved special every fall.
✤ Read a book you added to your list in October of any year OR re-read a favorite book.
Anyone But You - Jennifer Crusie (added Oct 2015) 10/29
✔4. The show opens with Linus van Pelt choosing a pumpkin from his pumpkin patch, and rolling it home for Lucy. When she plunges a knife into the pumpkin to begin carving it, he looks anguished and cries, "You didn't tell me you were going to kill it!"
✤ Read a book featuring a pair of siblings OR a book in which a character is killed (not a natural death).
14th Deadly Sin - James Patterson 10/7
✔5. As Linus writes his annual letter to the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown asks ""When are you going to stop believing in something that isn't true?", Linus responds with "When you stop believing in that fellow with the red suit and the white beard who goes HO! HO! HO!"
✤ Read a book with a repeated word in its title (disregard A, An and The) OR a book written in letter/diary format.
Stolen: A Letter to My Captor - Lucy Christopher 10/23
✔6. Lucy refuses to help Linus reach the mailbox to mail his letter, so he uses his blanket as a lasso to open the mailbox slot and sails the letter in.
✤ Read a book in which a character refuses to help another character OR a book with WESTERN on its main Goodreads page.
The Hunter - Theresa Meyers 10/31
✔7. Charlie Brown meets Lucy, who is tossing a football around. She begs him to kick the football, but as usual, she pulls it away at the last minute, so he lands on his back yet again.
✤Read a book featuring an athlete OR a book by an author whose first name is Lucy, Charlie or Charles. (Spelling variations work, other variations do not.)
Fighting to Forget - J.D. Salisbury (cage fighter) 10/12
✔8. Rather than going trick or treating with the rest of the kids, Linus persuades Sally to sit with him in his pumpkin patch, waiting for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin
✤ Read a book that you have been anticipating for a long time OR a book with a main character who is a loner.
Burn for Me - Ilona Andrews 10/30
✔9. Charlie Brown's costume, a ghost with too many holes in the white sheet, may be the reason the other kids get candy, gum and other goodies while, after every house, he declares, "I got a rock."
✤ Read a book with a predominantly white cover (post the cover) OR a book whose title contains only words that are no more than four letters long (two-word minimum)
Total Control - David Baldacci 10/29
✔10. Snoopy, wearing his World War I flying ace costume, climbs atop his Sopwith Camel and engages the Red Baron in a dogfight. When his plane is shot down, Snoopy eventually finds his way to Violet's party, where Schroeder plays some World War I songs on his piano.
✤ Read a book with a dog on the cover OR with a flying object of some sort on the cover (post the cover).
The Aeronaut's Windlass - Jim Butcher 10/1

Some of my favorite quotes from the show include:
✔ 11. Linus: "There are three things that I've learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin."
✤ Read a book that is controversial (tell us why) OR a book by anauthor whose initials can be found in THEGREATPUMPKIN (middle initial counts).
Tall, Dark & Dead - Tate Hallaway 10/18
✔12. Lucy: "All you have to do is walk up to a house, ring the doorbell, and say 'tricks or treats.'"
Sally: "Are you sure it's legal?"
✤ Read a book whose title is a question OR a book with a residential house on the cover (must be visible in the GR thumbnail; post the cover).
Edge of Midnight - Charlene Weir 10/19

✔13. Sally: "What a fool I was. Trick-or-treats come only once a year. And I miss it by sitting in a pumpkin patch with a blockhead. YOU OWE ME RESTITUTION!"
✤ Read a book with a main character whose first initial can be found in PUMPKIN (tell us the name) OR a book in which the first letter of every word in the title can be found in RESTITUTION (ALL WORDS COUNT; minimum three words)
Thirty-Two and a Half Complications - Denise Grover Swank (hero is Mason) 10/16
Other tidbits
✔14. After the show aired, bags and boxes of candy from all over the world were sent to Schulz "just for Charlie Brown"
✤ Read a book with candy or other sweets on the cover (must be visible in the GR thumbnail; post the cover) OR a book in which significant events take place in more than one country (tell us the countries).
Hide Away - Iris Johansen (USA and Scotland) 11/16
✔15. This is the only special that shows Pig Pen wearing glasses.
✤ Read a book by an author whose first and last names begin with the same letter OR a book with eyeglasses or sunglasses on the cover (must be visible in the GR thumbnail; the cover)
Highland Master - Hannah Howell 10/23

CHALLENGE COMPLETE

Duration: November 1 - December 31, 2016
READ: 10/10
✔1. Kentucky attained statehood on June 01, 1792, becoming the 15th state of the United States of America. Kentucky was never a territory, it was part of Virginia until it became a state. The name Kentucky is of Native American origin, and has been attributed to several languages with several possible meanings, including the Iroquois word "Ken-tah-ten" which means "The Land of Tomorrow". Its capital city is Frankfort.
✒ Read a book that has 15 intact in its year of first publication (tell us the year) -or- read a book whose title has the following format: The _______ of ________ -or- read a book that is a spinoff of another book/series .
The Kingdom of Gods - N.K. Jemisin 11/16

✔2. Kentucky is the 26th largest state in the United States in terms of size. It shares a border with seven other states: West Virginia in the east, Virginia in the southeast, Tennessee in the south, Missouri in the west, Illinois and Indiana in the northwest, and Ohio to the north and northeast. In 1774, James Harrod constructed the first settlement in Kentucky at Fort Harrod (present day Harrodsburg). Boonesboro was established in 1775 and many other settlements were created soon after.
✒ Read a book that is #7 or higher in a series -or- read a book whose author was born or raised in one of the border states of Kentucky -or- read a book whose main character's LAST name starts with a letter in HARROD
Insidious - Catherine Coulter (FBI Thriller #20) 11/7

✔3. Kentucky is the Bluegrass State, named for the grass that grows on Kentucky's limestone soil. Bluegrass is actually green, but in spring bluegrass produces bluish purple buds that give a rich blue cast to the grass when seen in large fields. The northern cardinal is Kentucky's state bird, the tulip poplar is its state tree & flower is the goldenrod. Kentucky's state horse is the thoroughbred, and its drink is... milk. Blue Moon of Kentucky is its state (bluegrass) song. Kentucky's motto is "United We Stand, Divided We Fall".
✒ Read a book whose cover is predominantly green, blue or purple -or- read a book in which (plain) milk is drunk by adults -or- read a book in which a group either comes together for a common cause, or divides for whatever reason
Rogues - George R.R. Martin et al 11/13

✔4. The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race is known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports" or "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate duration, and is also called "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. The Kentucky Derby has been run every consecutive year since 1875. The winner of the 2016 Derby (the 142nd running of the race) was Nyquist. The derby has its own traditions, one being the drinking of the beverage of the Derby, mint julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and sugar syrup. A typical Derby crowd drinks 120,000 liters of julep, draining 7,000 liters of bourbon.
✒ Read a book whose title AND author's initials appear in the name of the horse you picked from this list of Winners of the Kentucky Derby -or- read a book with a large rose(s) on the cover -or- read a book marked "Southern" on its main page and in which mint julep is drunk.
No Ghouls Allowed - Victoria Laurie (1929, Clyde Van Dusen) 11/13

✔5. Even though bourbon can be made anywhere within the United States where it is legal to distill spirits, the word has been associated with the whiskey distilled from Kentucky's Bourbon County (which was originally in Virginia) for a long time. Most distilleries also happen to be located in Kentucky. As of 2014, 95% of all bourbon is produced in Kentucky. The state had more than 5.3 million barrels of bourbon, a number more than the state's population. Internet myth has it that Bourbon County is one of Kentucky's dry counties, but that is not true. Kentucky's bourbon manufacturers offer a Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a tour of the area's 9 distilleries, where, in addition to the tastings, customers can buy 3 liters of whiskey per day, provided they are above the legal age for drinking.
✒ Read a book which has an alcoholic beverage on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book which is set in a town/city that has a population less than 5.3 million -or- read a book where something is debunked as a myth
Rainshadow Road - Lisa Kleypas (6,894 residents on San Juan Island) 11/20

✔6. The Hatfield–McCoy feud, or the McCoy-Hatfield feud or the Hatfield–McCoy war as some papers at the time called it, involved two rural families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River in the years 1863–1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy. The feud has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metonym for any bitterly feuding rival parties. More than a century later, the feud has become synonymous with the perils of family honor, justice, and revenge. The feud has its roots in the Civil War, when Asa Harmon McCoy was killed as he returned from the war, murdered by a group called Logan Wildcats, of which Devil Anse Hatfield was a member. Although he was confirmed to be sick at home at the time, his Uncle Jim Vance was believed to have committed the murder. Before and during the feud, the families intermarried and switched loyalties frequently.
✒ Read a book which has a feud between two families as a plot point -or- read a book in which a main character goes mostly by nickname -or- read a book with the genre True Crime appearing on its main page
The Fire Kimono - Laura Joh Rowland 11/14

✔7. Unlike Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima, and Betty Crocker, Colonel Sanders really did exist. Harland Sanders, who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky during the Great Depression, was the man behind Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first restaurant of the KFC franchise was begun in Utah in 1952. By branding himself as "Colonel Sanders", Harland became a prominent figure of American cultural history, and his image remains widely used in KFC advertising. However, the company's rapid expansion overwhelmed the aging Sanders, and, in 1964, he sold it to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown, Jr. and Jack C. Massey. Today, it is the second largest restaurant chain in the world (only McDonald's is ahead of it in terms of sale), with over 20,000 locations in 123 countries and territories. It is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
✒ Read a book in which a main character owns a food establishment -or- read a book with an older man's face on the cover -or- read a book that appears on any of the lists in Publisher Weekly's bestsellers list
Web of Lies - Jennifer Estep (m.c. owns a BBQ joint) 12/21

✔8. Mammoth Cave National Park is a U.S. national park in central Kentucky, encompassing portions of Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system known in the world. The park was established as a national park on July 1, 1941. The park's 52,830 acres are located primarily in Edmonson County, Kentucky, with small areas extending eastward into Hart County and Barren County. It is centered on the Green River, with a tributary, the Nolin River, feeding into the Green just inside the park. With 405 miles (652 km) of surveyed passageways Mammoth Cave is by far the world's longest known cave system, being over twice as long as the second-longest cave system, Mexico's Sac Actun underwater cave. Mammoth Cave is the second oldest tourist attraction of the United States, after Niagara Falls. Mammoth Cave is home to the endangered Kentucky cave shrimp, a sightless albino shrimp.
✒ Read a book in which a character travels underground for whatever reason -or- read a book whose title has a word from the synonyms of the word Mammoth -or- read a book with a water creature on the cover
Captive Soul - Anne Windsor 11/25

✔9. Kentucky's Barren County has some of the state's most fertile soil, and was even named rural America's best place to live by Progressive Farmer magazine. Frederick Vinson, the 13th Chief Justice of the US, began life in a Louisa County jailhouse. Treasurer "Honest" Dick Tate, however, didn't live up to his name, as he absconded with a quarter million dollars from the state treasury in 1888. Bowling Green is the birthplace of Corvettes (which is also Kentucky's state car). Post-It notes are made only in Cynthiana, and the exact number of them manufactured each year is a closely guarded trade secret. Cumberland Falls in the Daniel Boone National Forest is one of the few places on earth to see a moonbow (a rainbow formed by moonlight rather than sunlight). The melody of the song "Happy Birthday" was composed in 1893 by Patty and Mildred Hill, two Louisville sisters. Mother's Day also originated in Kentucky, when schoolteacher Mary Towles Sasseen created it for her own mama (much before West Virginia's Ann Jarvis made it into the mammoth holiday it is now). The public saw an electric light for the first time in Louisville. Thomas Edison introduced his incandescent light bulb to crowds at the Southern Exposition in 1883.
✒ Read a book with opposing words in the title -or- read a book which has either a waterfall or a moon on the cover -or- read a book in which the main character is a mother.
Wolf with Benefits - Shelly Laurenston 11/7

✔10. In Kentucky, you may not throw eggs at a public speaker unless you are willing to face up to a year in prison. A cat (or dog) cannot molest cars. In Owensboro, wives are not allowed to buy hats without their husband's permission. It is against the law to shoot off a policeman's tie, or to hunt fish with a bow and arrow. And it is illegal to remarry the same man four times.
✒ Read a book in which a character has been married at least three times -or- read a book with an item of clothing on the cover -or- read a book which has cats or dogs in prominent roles
