***PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED UNDER THE TITLE Night Betrayed***

The Change that devastated the earth did not destroy Theo Waxnicki. It made him something more than human--eternally young, eternally beautiful . . . but not immortal. When he dies on a mission against the Strangers, he is lost to the darkness . . . until a miracle lady brings him back.

Born during the apocalyptic storms and earthquakes that left the world in ruins, Selena has dedicated her life to easing the pain of others as they slip into death. But Theo is different. He is the first in her care ever to survive.

Responding to Selena's tender touch, Theo starts to live again--to feel and desire again. But joined in a world of terrors, the secrets they can never share make them targets....and love could be the ultimate betrayal.

So apparently I requested this at the library. I have no idea why. And after trying it I have a suspicion they logged it to the wrong account. Anyway, very definitely not my book. Quit at page 22, when the hero started describing the heroine's tight, curvy, golden body while she was spoon-feeding him soup. Nuh uh.

This is the only Envy book I've read, but now I gotta say the series has me fascinated. Love the characters, the gritty post-apocalyptic setting, and the overarching conflict. The only thing that drove me absolutely batty, this is a pet peeve of mine so many may not feel the same, is the near constant pop culture references. One or two is fine, maybe even humorous to me, but dozens scream shortcut to me. Describe something and let me decide what it is. I don't need the didactic commentary that someone looks like a young Mel Gibson. Hey Road Warrior is a favorite of mine, but it just yanks me right out of the story. I really liked the story and resented being yanked every single time. Okay rant off. Sorry, but I do have flashpoints.

I listened to the audiobook - so 5 stars for the narrator's performance and 4 stars for the story. I would recommend reading this series from the beginning. I have all six on audio and have loved them so far. Dystopian romance/adventure set in 2060 Las Vegas/New Vegas area. (aka Envy). There are Zombies, bad guys, steamy romance scenes, heartbreak and a civilization starting to rebuild from scratch. 4.5 stars.

It's been a while since I had read any books in this series and I have been dying to dive back in. Night Beckons was the perfect book to get me back into this world.

Selena is called the Death Lady and her 'abilities' enable her to ease pain of the dying and help them transition into the next world. YIKES! That is one freaky ability. It's not a wonder why no one wants her around. However, she has other secrets she's doesn't share. And speaking of secrets, Theo has a doozy. He survived the Change 50 years before but he hasn't aged a day. But he can die. Close to death, Theo is brought to the Death Lady and dies. But instead of helping him cross over she brings him back to life!

Wow! This one was just a wild teacup ride from start to finish. So many secrets, so many twist and turns. Seriously, I don't know whose secrets were weirder. It all starts with Theo dying. No! And Serena bring him back to life. What? Everybody is wondering the same thing... HOW! yes it gets explained but it was still quite the head scratcher for a while. I did enjoy their interactions and as all the secrets came into play that were revealed. The big one for me was the Gangas. I had my suspicions and had been guessing the whos but I could never figure out the hows. Let me just say it was ghastly shocking and I did not see that coming! Be ready for a lot of reveals, shockers, and a interesting ending that may or may not involve moving a bookshelf. LOL!!!

There's quite a few new characters in this story as well as some old familiar ones. As for the old familiars, take this suggestion to heart: this series needs to be read in order. There's a lot of world building that are associated to The Change and those characters. Reading the books out of order and not following along and each new thing is added to the series will ruin the epic ending Envy and all the survivors are headed to.

Note: The Heroes of New Vegas was formerly written as Joss Ware, and known as The Envy Chronicles which is where I first read this book.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Series note: The Envy Chronicles involves an ongoing story arc and as such the books should be read in order.

When Theo Waxnicki is brought in to Selena’s small clinic on the brink of death, she doesn’t think twice before saving his life. Determined to make the most of his third chance at life, Theo sets out to convince Selena that the attraction they feel for each other is real. Can he get past her defenses and unveil her secrets before it is too late?

The post-apocalyptic world building is detailed and original. Nevertheless, Theo’s unique ability is never demonstrated to its fullest and Selena’s calling is never fully explained,

The most interesting aspect of the book is the insight into the nature of the Gangas and the explanation of their origin. Up until this point, they have been presented as mindless zombies controlled by the Strangers, but it is now clear that there is more to their story and by the end it is impossible not to empathize with these rather pathetic creatures.

The romance is the weakest in the series so far. To begin with, much is made of Selena's age and the fact that she is ostensibly much older than Theo. This has a negative effect on the chemistry between the couple and their emotional connection feels forced. Moreover, Theo’s characterization as a self-absorbed ass in the first few books has never endeared him to me and his condescending “I know better” attitude toward Selena does not redeem him in any way.

The characters from the first three books are sorely missed. While they do put in an appearance every once in a while, none play a significant part in the this specific installment. In fact, the updates on Remy’s situation are far more compelling than Selena and Theo’s relationship although Ware’s use of the to further her character development is seriously irritating.

All in all, the developments in the overall story arc make this a worthwhile read but the romance falls flat. Hopefully, the next installment will be better.

Worst in the series so far. It was so slow and boring until the last 85% I skimmed through most of it. Theo is NOT one of my favorite characters, almost none of the original 5 (Elliot, Simon, Wyatt, Quent & Fence) were in this, and Selena's power was incredibly stupid. Also there were a few basic continuity problems that just piss me off every time. For one, they clean Selena's wounds with Vodka, then Theo finds the "bottle of Whisky they has used to clean Selena's wounds". Also annoying was Selena using "wixy". This is an Envy term and I find it hard to believe that people dying from Envy would have been using that around Selena, and it was only used once, which makes me think the author only used it because it was in the other books. Which is stupid. Hopefully the next book is much better because this was crap!!!

Theo's book. Dear Lord. What a snoozefest. I was barely able to pay attention throughout the entire book. Actually, the only time I really focused was when the other miscellaneous characters were around.

Theo has never been my favorite (he's my least favorite) character, and this book didn't make me like him more. He's been in love with Sage for years, and then within moments of meeting Selena, he's over her? It doesn't work like that... Plus there's the silliness of him not wanting to tell her how old he is? Why not? It was funny at first, but it got old REALLY fast, especially when he KNEW one of her biggest reservations was the fact that she was so much older than him!

I'm just really wanting Wyatt's book. Okay? Okay.

I could not finish this book. I didn't like the idea, I couldn't get into the story and the characters weren't really developing at all and I was pretty much confused the entire time.

Now, this may (or may not) be because it's the 4th in the series.. though I was told they could be read stand alone.
If I am missing a lot of information due to skipping the first 3 then perhaps that is my fault.
But there are far too many good books out there to read, to be stuck in one that I wasn't feeling.
I will probably pick this one back up when I read the first three. I do adore Joss Ware as Colleen Gleason so this came as a huge surprise for me that I didn't like this book.

OK, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would (Theo just hasn't appealed to me as a character ever since he was introduced in Book 1, and the way he treated Sage in Book 2 pretty much sealed that for me). And on the plus side, this is the first book in the series without obvious issues of consent, so yay for that?

BUT. That said, Selena's constant angsting about Theo being younger than her, and his decision not to tell her until right at the end felt like... unnecessary conflict for the sake of conflict.

I'll continue reading the series to find out how the series arc with the Elite goes, but I'm not really loving the individual romance threads.

Joint Review with Has from http://thebookpushers.com

MinnChica: I have to say, I started reading the Envy Chronicles just a few short months ago, and Ware has quickly become my FAVORITE post-apocalyptic author. I love the world she’s created!

Has: I read the first book when it first came out earlier last year, because I am always a sucker for a dark/dystopian setting. So when I discovered that the 4th book was up on Netgalley – I soon grabbed the chance to read it and I have to say it was a book that totally blew away my expectations.

MinnChica: I can completely agree with that. For some reason I had never really connected with Theo as a character, so although I was looking forward to the overall plot, I wasn’t super stoked for Theo’s story. Let me just say that he blew me away!

Has: Don’t you love it when something like this happens? I totally agree about Theo, but in this book he totally came onto his own. I also loved Selena who was a fantastic character!

MinnChica: She really was fabulous. I liked that she kept struggling with the idea of falling for someone who was younger than her, only to find out that Theo was actually older. It was a great little twist! My heart broke from Selena a few times throughout the story, especially when we learn what exactly she can do. *tear*

Has: I loved that twist with the older heroine who falls in love with a younger guy but who is really much older than she was. I loved how Theo was all patient and letting the romance grow between them slowly and it really helped with the tension between them.
But I agree – Selena’s past and power must be so hard and emotional but she found a great partner with Theo who totally understood her and her abilities.

MinnChica: I agree, Theo really blossomed for me in this one, and really became the perfect partner for Selena, better than she could ever ask for. He proved that he had so much depth. The way he cared for and wanted to have a relationship with Selena’s son, the way he worried for Leo, the way he helped Selena accept her gift and try to use it in a better way…

Has: And her gift of helping dying people pass on and the glimpses we got with hospice was sad and different from other books which use this trope/idea. I also thought that this book was much more gentler in tone but also darker and in some ways more emotional than the previous installments. It really added a depth of emotional pathos and realism and I liked that because it showed different sides for this series.

MinnChica: The other thing I absolutely LOVE about this series is that the overall plot arc is constantly moving forward. So many times in series the overall story arc seems to drag on for three, four, five books before moving forward. With Ware, she really moves things along at a quick pace, answering questions and posing more and more as she goes. Love it!

Has: Oh definitely! Especially with that ending – it answered several questions but produced more and leaves you wanting for more.

MinnChica: There were a few things that I didn’t necessarily like throughout the book, but understand why they were there. The character Jennifer was a catty little girl, and she annoyed the crap out of me, especially with how harsh the reality of their world was. She seemed a little ridiculous. Also the death of a certain character really tore me up. Now, I’m not one to question an author’s actions, but there was one scene in which one of our female characters was brutalized by the bounty hunter Seattle. I can only hope that Ware has a very specific reason for this, because it was definitely hard to read and get through.

Has: Oh I agree about that death and I was literally shocked by that because I thought they would be okay. But I could see Jennifer who was leading on Sam like that to be realistic especially after being turned down by Theo.
But that death and the other events that happened really showed how harsh and unforgiving this world was and out of all of the books this was the one which I think showed how gritty it was.

MinnChica: Hum, I can just imagine if I was living in Ware’s world, I probably wouldn’t have time for the BS that Jennifer was pulling. But then again, catty girls will probably always be catty girls! You’re definitely right in that this book really shows us just how harsh and unforgiving Ware’s world can be!

Has: There was also reappearances of previous characters even though most of the book was set in a new territory away from Envy. I also loved the new development that happened with a certain character who was the main protagonist in the previous book which gave some humour and lightness in the book which was otherwise very dark.

MinnChica: I love the reappearance of old characters as well. And without giving away any spoilers, there are some great little developments that will delight readers: something about a certain arrow-loving heroine! OH OH, and for those of you who are wondering about how zombies are created, you’re in for a treat!! I do hope that Ware gets around to telling Remy’s story soon. The mystery surrounding her is starting to kill me!! And I have to admit, I’m totally rooting for a Remy and Wyatt romance, even though Ware won’t give any hints. (Trust me, I asked!!)

I really enjoyed this installment in the series. It might not have been my favorite, but it really delivered so much more than I was expecting. I am so happy with the way the plot is moving overall, and I really enjoyed getting the chance to see another side of Theo. This is a series that UF, paranormal, and Sci Fi Romance fans alike can all enjoy!

I give Night Betrayed a B.

Has: Although Night Betrayed may not be as action packed as the previous book and had a quiter toned romance- in many ways was a darker and grittier installment than the previous books. It really showed that even the main characters can pay a heavy price which I admire Joss Ware conveying that and for me made the world a more realistic place. The romance between Selena and Theo was great! And I loved the twist on the older hero/older heroine trope. I think with this book it will show it can take chances and throw established tropes up in the air and tie it up in a different way from other paranormal/UF/Sci Fi romance and for me this stood out of the pack!
I can’t wait for the next book because the gut-wrenching and emotional ending has opened up different plot threads which will have ramifications for the next book.
I also give it a B

4th book in an intriguing SciFi/Fantasy/Paranormal series

These books should be read in order. Although the individual books have resolution for the main characters' romance, the plot premise is ongoing. Each book has different main characters, but the other supporting characters repeat in each installment. Adult language, violence, and sexual scenes.

I wasn't as fond of the Hero Theo in this book. He wasn't one of the men who slept for 50 years after the Change. However, he has managed not to age in those 50 years, whereas his Twin Lou has aged normally. I did like the Heroine. I'm not, though, quite sold on their romance. There was a lot going on in this book, and not all of it was smooth--but I still enjoyed it.

An intriguing series and plot premise. The characters are generally likeable. There is action and romance. I will be continuing the series.

FYI:
MCs' & the majority of the other characters are a little older than is usual for these types of novels, which isn't a problem, just something different & therefore noteworthy.
There's a lot of movie references, it obvious that the author is a film buff.

Main reasons why I didn't like the novel:
MC's are melodramatic, & the MC's 'special' abilities are ridiculous & aren't credible (even for fiction). Female MC can tell that people are going to die soon (which is completely unhelpful), & she only knows basic first aid, so I don't know why people go to her - esp when they already know they're dying (that's why they came), & they really shouldn't be travelling (away from family, friends etc) if they're that ill. Even the title doesn't make sense.
Impossibly fortuitous that the male MC ends up at that exact ranch.
Tragedy is used to cover the fact that there's NO real story, & I find that technique emotionally manipulative.
Also when you have zombies, why do the people go out without a weapon, not even a pointy stick?!

My Take:
Some details about living conditons:
I am not going to talk about the story line and such as that information is provided above. The main love connection is between Theo and Selena. The problem for Selena is that Theo looks to be 12 years or so younger than she is. His twin brother is Lou, except that Theo has not aged as fast as Lou. They have been living in Envy, a play on the N and the V in the abbreviation for Nevada and what used to be Vegas. I guess that means there would have been plenty of rooms left to occupy. Vonnie is the only mother Selena has ever known and Sam is Selena’s 17-year-old son. They (Vonnie, Sam and Selena) all live with Frank and 90 something cantankerous old man with more energy than men half his age, in a house that belonged to a computer genius in what was Nevada, I think. It was about three-days for Vegas over bad or non-existent roads. They have plumbing and electrical power. Selena, born during the apocalypse, has a gift to help the dying and, known as the death-lady runs a hospice there. By the way, I am a fifty something and look nothing like the twenty-something cover model. Is there any wonder why Selena and others my age have body issues?

It can certainly be hard to look at a post-apocalyptic world in any form of creative expression. Fiction can be the hardest because we can use our own mental pictures and thoughts to draw and inhabit the new world.
This was particularly graphic because the apocalypse itself would have occurred less than a year ago and was perpetrated by a group of wealthy people who craved immortality. Would I and the people and animals I love have survived? It is just one of the thoughts I had while reading this book.

Considering this is the fourth in the series, it wasn’t too hard to catch-up with what was happening. And characters from the first three books are only peripherally involved. The only things I didn’t understand was the reason for the Zombies who are created by the Strangers, the elite Immortalsand why the men who destroyed the world – on purpose—are sometimes called strangers and sometimes Elite.

There are a couple of issues with events within this novel. First, what is the power that has been granted to Selena, by whom and what is the crystal she uses? And, in this book, something happens to Theo’s power but what happened isn’t explained.

The relationship between Selena and Theo is strange and fraught with a lack of communication and mistrust.. But they really seem to be drawn to each other, and the intimacy between them has a nice slow progression. They certainly do make love in unusual places. Finally, they understand that they are the one each other wishes to confide in. Their relationship is predictable, but there are plenty of twists and mysteries in the complex plot involving bounty hunters, zombies (gangas), evil doctors, computer hackers, dead geniuses, and a hospice. There is a little of everything, including a ferris wheel.

I think this is a crossover book that, as a thriller might interest men, and as an erotic romance is directed at the female demographic, who I understand compromise the majority of the fiction market. My questions about the reason for the Zombies and the crystal and Theo’s powers mostly arose at completion if the book. They did not affect my enjoyment. This was not a light read; there is sadness and tragedy in a hospice and in a post-apocalyptic life. And there are signs of hope; people are still interested in story, and in their appearance. In fact, the women have learned to make their own nail polish out of clay and honey. The remaining population is not dependent on the trappings of our petrochemical dependence. They don’t have many meds or painkillers, or vaccinations, as the Elite has not allowed technology or cars to survive.
Rooting out any devices that are being created is one apparent purpose of the “snoot,” a group of paramilitary nasties and bounty hunters who work for the now-immortal Strangers or Elite.

The book has enough thrill and action to keep one guessing and enough human interaction, both sexual and non-sexual, to keep one interested. I recommend this book and am putting the series in my to-be-read list.

I've said it in previous reviews, I love the world Joss Ware has created in her post-apocalyptic series. The romance on the other hand, generally came in second to the world. I was pleasantly surprised this time with both Theo and Selena. Theirs is a romance begun with chance and continued with mutual attraction and respect.

Theo is a wonderful hero who proves computer geeks can be sexy! The fact that he's also buff and has a wicked sense of humor doesn't hurt either. Theo was born before the Change and is nearly eighty years old but looks closer to thirty. You would think this would be an asset but Selena, who is fifty, gets hung up on the fact that she thinks Theo is much younger than her, and he doesn't come right out and correct her. Selena's harping on Theo's age got old after a while. In this dark world, consenting adults should take their pleasure where they can. Theo and Selena's relationship begins with Selena prepared to help Theo pass on to the next life. But he surprises her and survives. While Theo is recovering at Selena's settlement, he finds his curiosity aroused, among other things, as he gets to know Selena. He also finds more information on the Elite and the Cult of Atlantis.

Selena isn't sure why she is able to help the dying cross over to the next life but it's something that she feels compelled to do. But it's not only the humans she needs to help. Helping the creatures that come out at night puts Selena in danger but she takes the risk. She took this risk, knowing that other people counted on her and I have to question why she put it above her family and friends. Selena has a calm about her that I think draws Theo to her. She offers him compassion, warmth and companionship. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other in this less than romantic setting. Selena spending many of her days with the dying and Theo is busy helping around the settlement and getting some computers working. Even with Theo and Selena being older, they still showed the wonder and awe of falling in love. Of realizing how important this person has become. They had some very hot, very romantic scenes. Which just proves there can be love and romance in a post-apocalyptic world.

The story may be centered around Theo and Selena but we do catch up with characters from previous books. Theo's brother Lou is very much involved in helping set up the computer network. He's brilliant when it comes to computers and being Theo's twin, they share a special bond. Lou is different from Theo in that Lou didn't stop aging the way Theo did. So they may be twins but Lou looks like a grandfather while Theo looks like a man in his prime. That doesn't stop them from acting like brothers.

Ian Marck is also around, stirring up trouble. He is a bounty hunter who had run ins with the Theo and his friends from Envy. I'm still not sure what side Marck is on. His side, I think. He's an intriguing characters and I hope we've not seen the last of him.

In addition to the character growth, the overall series arc continues to progress with some shocking revelations that change perceptions and give the remaining human population something else to fear. The more I read this series, the more I'm in awe of Ware's ability to not only create a fascinating world, but to be true to that worlds' canon. No one is safe. There isn't a magical wand to wave and make everything better.

Night Betrayed left me wanting more. More of the world of Envy. More of the people who are trying to make a life in a hostile world full of danger and the unknown.

I love every journey Joss Ware takes through in this complex, interesting post-apocalyptic world!
Quent, Abandon the Night, was a favorite and I didn't think Ware could do better then that but I was just proven wrong!
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy Theo’s book as he wasn’t one of my favorite men in the series but Night Betrayed definitely surpassed my expectations.
Night Betrayed continues where Abandon the Night ended, the bounty hunter Seattle has shot Theo. He is still heart broken over loosing Sage to Simon and disquieted having so many un-answered questions about his abilities since the Change, so has been taking on dangerous missions for the resistance. You really feel bad for the guy until we meet up with Serena.
Serena, the Death Lady, was born during the Change and miraculously survived with the ability to see a death cloud over people who are about to pass away along with seeing their Heavenly guardians who guide them into the next world. She has the responsibility to ease the transition and pain for her patients and carries a unique and powerful crystal that comes with an even bigger responsibility; to free the souls of the gangas, zombie like creatures who ravish what’s left of the human population.
Serena is dedicated to her mission and because of the controversial issues keeps it a secret and doesn’t trust other’s to get close and learn about it. She has been burned in the past and does not want to go through that heartbreak again.
When Theo is brought to Selena she sees the death cloud surrounding him and knows that it is only a matter of time before he passes and he soon does but then the Heavenly Guides tell her to save him and miraculously he is brought back to life in more ways then one.
Theo is instantly attracted to the beautiful and serene Death Lady and is surprised when he doesn’t even think of Sage yet knows that Serena is keeping dangerous secrets. However Theo has a secret of his own, Serena believes he is a young man and is having some major cougar (hehe) issues, and before Theo confides in her that he is really a 78 year old man he wants Serena to love him for who he is and get over her insecurities with their supposed age difference.

Besides the main plot there are also interesting sub-plots, all full of mystery and intrigue. I loved the sub-plot with Remington Truth’s granddaughter, Remy, and look forward to learning more about her in the future. Additionally there were a few surprising twists and one I really didn’t foresee concerning the gangas. Ware really gave dimension to them that I did not see coming.
The characters and relationships in Night Betrayed are believable and there is some humor sprinkled in along with sizzling romance and Ware does an exceptional job of balancing everything with the fascinating world she has built around it all.
I think that this book can be read as a stand-alone but will be read better in series order. Ware has the wonderful ability to give you enough back-story so that you understand the story arc without boring series readers. It has been a while and many books in between my last read in this series so I had forgotten a few things but as I read I was able to easily catch back up.
Night Betrayed was an excellent read and I am looking forward to more of this series!

Previously Published on my blog: Welcome to Larissa's Bookish Life

*Contain minor spoilers if you haven’t read the previous books in the series

Ever since I read the first three books in the series I have been looking forward to reading more and finding out more about the mysteries surrounding this series. I am really happy to say that Night Betrayed not only met, but has easily surpassed my expectations. I’ll be honest and say that since it had been a while since I read the previous books in the series, I had a little hard time getting situated and remembering what was going on in general. See, that’s what happens when you are following over 50 books series LOL

Night Betrayed takes place a little after the events of Abandon The Night. Theo has been shot in the chest and we meet up with him her a woman that people call the Death Lady, is taking care of him. She has a powerful crystal that performs a miracle, and brings Theo literally back to life.

Theo is heartbroken after Sage chose Simon over him, so he has been trying to get lost in the Resistance's mission. Being the freak who has barely aged since the Change, that destroyed the world he knew 50 years ago, is taking its toll on him and he is simply tired of it all.

Selena has had the burden of knowing when people are going to die for a long time. She was born during the Change and by a miracle was able to survive it, however that was not without its side effects. She is able to the see a Death Cloud around people that are going to die, as well as the guides that come from the other side to help them through the journey. Selena also has in her possession a powerful crystal and with it she carries the most heavy burden of all, save the souls of the Zombie-like gangas that have terrorized and killed so many people since the Change.

Theo and Selena’s romance is one full of obstacles. Selena has trust issues because of what she believes is her mission and the fact that when she has disclosed it to people before, no one seems to understand. Theo has just had his heart broken and though he believe he has found in Selena the woman he is meant to be with, he can’t quite bring himself to tell her that he and the 78-year-old Lou are Twins.

I really like this series. I love the premise and the pos-apocalyptic world that Joss has created. The characters are very rich and the romance is sizzling hot. The best of all is that she is able to balance all that out with a great and intricate plot full of mysteries that kept me glued to the book, page after page.

The only thing that bothered me was Selena’s obsession with the apparent age difference between her and Theo. I can understand her reticence in getting involved with a younger man, but before apparent age I believe in taking in consideration what’s inside and Theo was far from a young pup. I felt that she was a bit annoying about that sometimes, but over all she was a great leading lady!

Nonetheless, Night Betrayed is an awesome read! Full of answers about the mysteries raised in the previous books, but it also asks many more. I LOVE that and I can’t wait for the next installment in this amazing and original series!

night-betrayed-ency-chronicles-joss-wareSelena knows a few things about death, as she is always surrounded by it. Known as the Death Lady she helps those that are near the end pass on to the other side. She also knows that inside each ganga is a human soul trapped inside and she has the only means to release them and give them peace. So she goes out every night armed with her crystal to put an end to the suffering of every ganga she can find. People don’t understand how she can have compassion for the monsters, which has led her to having an isolated life, living with the mother like Vonnie, Frank, and her teenage son, Sam.

While tending to the dying in her hospice ward in their home, Sammy and his friends bring Selena another dying man. But there is something different about his death cloud. He dies while she’s helping another patient to the other side. But when she puts her crystal to the eye of his dragon tattoo on his back, his heart restarts, bringing him back to the land of the living.

Theo is nursing his broken heart while Selena is plagued with loneliness which brings the two together in an explosive way. But Selena is haunted with feelings of rocking the cradle, if she only knew his real age! Their biggest obstacle, however, is their disagreement on how to handle the gangas as neither can see it from the other’s point of view.

But when tragedy strikes, everything changes. Will it bring them closer together or tear them viciously apart?

After witnessing Theo’s heartbreak over Sage, I was desperate to see a happy ending for him. And, it takes awhile for him to truly achieve that in this book, but throughout you know that it’s just around the corner; be patient and it will come. And, I enjoyed watching the relationship develop.

In this novel, we don’t get much advancement in the story arch as far as the Strangers and the Elite are concerned, but it’s worth it to have such a compelling story and one that will definitely be built upon. We do, however, learn more about the gangas and their origins though.

I LOVED getting a glimpse of Zoë and Quent’s relationship. I was concerned since their book is over that it meant we wouldn’t get to see them again, expect as secondary characters in the background. But the little bit we saw of them put my fears at ease and I’m so excited for their future!

Another storyline that I’m really excited for is Remy and Wyatt! The things that happened to her in this book are going to have long reaching consequences that the duo will have to overcome when they finally realize they belong together, which I know is going to happen!

I even see a little hint of a romance for Lou! And, the last line of this book managed to both cement the promise of that romance and also to crack me up. It was hilarious and had me laughing out loud. The perfect ending to a great book!

If you haven’t checked this series out, you definitely should. It started a little slow for me with the first book, but has quickly picked up and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment!

Everyday is still a struggle to stay alive in the fourth book of Joss Ware's post-Apocalyptic series. Ever since the Change, the day where Zombies took over and society ended, those left alive are trying to put their lives back together. For Theo Waxnicki his life will definitely never be what it once was. On the day of the Change his body mutated to stop him from aging and to heal very quickly. He's always seen his perpetual youth as a good thing until he meets Selena. Known as the Death Lady, she feels uncomfortable being in a relationship with Theo because she thinks he's so much younger than she is. As the mother of a young man, and with the serious job of guiding those who are dying towards a comfortable death, Selena feels the weight of the world on her and thinks Theo is only out for fun. Also keeping them apart is their differing views about the Zombies, or Gangas as they're referred to in this book. Theo wants to see all of them dead because he sees them as nothing but killers, whereas Selena sees the last remnants of their souls when she looks at them and puts her life in jeopardy every night to use a magic crystal to release them to their death. Will these differing views be an insurmountable obstacle to their relationship or will a disturbing discovery about how new Zombies are created unite them to save a future they've just started to create?

To fully appreciate this book you need to have read this series from the beginning. Theo's past is important to who he is now and it's touched on very lightly in this book. Changes occur to him during this story that are mentioned once and then left hanging. Because of how superficial he's discussed you never feel truly invested in what happens to him. The same holds true for Selena. Her reasons for needing to save the Zombies are never fully understood, even to herself. This is very frustrating to the reader since the issue seems to be used only as a plot device to cause friction between Theo and her.

Other characters from previous books also show up during this story without much reason behind their appearance. Most notably are the villains who show up to do something villainous for no other apparent reason. It all leads to further frustration for the reader waiting for something to happen and questions to be answered. With this book there was no storyline advancement, nor do you get a definitive resolution to Selena and Theo's relationship.

Fans of this series will want to read this to see the continuing adventures of characters they've seen before, but they shouldn't expect any earth shattering developments. This installment felt more like filler than substance. Those thinking of picking this up on a whim should definitely look elsewhere. What is an intriguing idea for a series has led to a confusing and unsatisfying read that has me hoping the next book in the series will be more rewarding.

(RabidReads.com)Book four of the Envy Chronicles tells Theo’s story. Theo is seventy eight, but due to a weird situation that happened during the “Change” he only looks about thirty. To keep things even more interesting, he has a twin brother that does look every bit of his age. Both survived the apocalypse that happened fifty years before and both are part of the resistance. Resistance is needed due to the “Strangers” that rule the world, are immortal, and pretty much live in luxury while everyone else lives an almost hand to mouth existance, in some cases. They allow no technology, but Theo and his brother were major tech geeks in their past, and they are connecting the computers in areas that surround the town of Envy-once known as Las Vegas. The Strangers are bad enough as villains, but they also employ bounty hunters that make life even harder for the other survivors. And as icing on the cake, they have created zombie like creatures that only come out at night, and are hungry for human flesh. Just another way to keep the people in line.

When Theo gets hurt and is close to dying, he is brought to Selena to ease him into death. She can tell when someone is dying, and Theo is close. Because of her “gift”, she operates a hospice of sorts in an old mansion left over from before the change. Selena is an attractive fifty year old that has a seventeen year old son, Sam. Events happen to keep Theo from dying-not a spoiler as this is his book! When Theo meets Selena he is pretty much immediately smitten with her. On Selena’s part, she has no wish to be a cougar-but even she can’t resist the pull towards Theo. Theo keeping his secret about his actual age, made for some conflict. Especially as Selena is so not into the age difference. I was just happy that Theo had found somebody as he has recently gone through his own heartbreak.

So much happens in this read and I have barely touched on most of it. There’s ongoing story threads from previous books, and some of that comes into play in this book as well. This series abounds with good characters as well as good villains. Theo isn’t the only character that came through the Change now different in a supernatural way, and it’s been fascinating to see the journey each of these men goes through in this new world. Each book, features one of these men, and the woman they eventually fall for.

Romance, action, some heartbreak, and all the ongoing story threads and villains kept this book a real page turner for me. It was fun seeing Theo and Selena fall in love, Selena fighting it until she can’t. I highly recommend this and the entire series to adult paranormal romance and dystopian fans. Urban Fantasy and/or science fictions fans will find a lot to like about these books as well.

Night Betrayed, the fourth book in Joss Ware’s post-apocalyptic romance series, is yet another enjoyable installment. This book tells Theo’s story. I enjoyed Theo in most of the other books and was eagerly anticipating his story. However, he was rather irritating in Sage’s book, Embrace the Night Eternal. But he returns to being the Theo readers have come to know and love.

I think Theo is one of my favorite characters because he’s from before The Change and is able to bridge the gap of today’s world that readers are familiar with this “brave new world”. The Change also did something to Theo so that he has hardly aged in the decades following the end of the world.

So he has the mind and experience of an elderly man in the body of a thirty-something studmuffin in his prime. I was afraid his love interest would be too young and would creep me out. For example, I find some the vampire stories a little creepy especially when a hundred year old vampire is romantically involved with a teenager. There’s just something inherently WRONG with that. Yuck.

Ware has a lot more sense than some authors *cough*StephanieMeyer*cough* in that aspect, Theo’s love interest is a mature woman, while still much younger than Theo it’s a more respectable difference. I found it amusing when Selena kept harping about how much younger Theo was than her and he kept making comments about not being as young as he looked, what a smart ass. I loved the banter between Theo and Selena even when the shit hits the fan and faced with extreme situations and personal loss there's always a bright side and neither were whiny or pessimistic. Theo and Selena had excellent chemistry and I thought this was an excellent installment to the story, if a bit more somber given Selena’s gift of helping those close to death move on earning her the name Death Lady.

Also a bit grim is Remy’s experience. I really hope she gets a bangin’ HEA. Night Betrayed sets us up for what I assume is her story in the next book, however given her experience in Night Betrayed, I wouldn’t be surprised if her book isn’t until further in the series. I’m wondering who her hero is, Wyatt? I don’t think it’s Ian. Thoughts from anyone else reading this series?

Something I’ve noticed about this series is that, for the most, I’ve enjoyed each installment but I haven’t loved any of the h/h combos but I still find that this is one of the series that, overall, I truly enjoy. Ware has built a world filled with danger, adventure, and a slew of unanswered questions that keeps readers coming back for more.

My Review:
For some reason, this book seems much harsher to me than the others in this series have been. I am guessing that the reason for that is because, in this book, we become much more familiar with the gangas (zombies) and what they actually are and how that have come into creation.

In addition, this book focuses on Theo. Theo is an interesting character from this series. He was in Vegas with his twin brother when the Change (apocalypse) occurred, but his experience was different from his twin brother, Lou's. Theo was caught up and buried under some electronics (he and his brother, Lou, are computer geniuses,) which caused a change in his genetic make-up. Like the others caught in the cave in Sedona, Theo doesn't age and has a super-power...he can generate an electrical charge.

I have read a lot of books where the characters were hundreds of years old while still maintaining their youth. But for some reason, in this book (not the series, because it hasn't bothered me in the other books,) it's not the same because you see both Lou & Theo together. They are twins. One is elderly. One is not. There's something just a bit creepy about it (for me) about the constant reinforcement that Theo should be elderly too. I know it's because of the twin thing, but it bothered me to constantly be thinking about him actually being elderly. It brings a focus on the shallowness of how we look at aging.

On the other hand, we have Selena, who is also very youthful looking for her age of 50. That was never really explained except for the fact that she was born during the midst of the Change. As a result, she has her own special gift...the ability to help usher souls into the afterlife. She is known as the Death Lady because everyone brings her the dying and she helps to ease their transition. That's how she meets Theo. He is brought to her because he is dying.

While I didn't like this one quite as much as I have the others in this series, this was still an interesting book. I think that the issues I had will be mine alone. I am excited to see where the series goes from here...especially with Remington Truth. I know that we should have at least 2 more books in the series...Wyatt & Fence. I am thinking/hoping that there may be a bit more there with Ian, because his character intrigues me, but I may be writing more into that storyline than there actually is. All I know is that I can't wait for more of these books to come out.

I was a bit disappointed by this book in the Envy Chronicles. Please keep in mind that these book need to be read as a series ad in the correct order. This book SHOULD NOT be read as a stand-alone.
Theo and Selena don’t really connect. She’s too busy making a fuss about their age difference. As we know from the previous books Theo is close to 80 years old. He was wounded during the Change and was left with a computer integrated circuit in his back. The circuit in his back is fitting since he and his brother Lou are Envy’s computer junkies. I liked the concept of how Selena was different from most people. She has the ability of being able to see a death aura around people. She knows exactly when they are about to take their last breath. Selena first noticed this ability when she was a child. She has earned the title of the Death Lady. That is not her only ability though. Selena gets up close with the gangas on a regular basis. She helps their human soul pass into the afterlife. Theo being an alpha male has major issues with her putting herself in danger. Selena is such a secretive woman that will not share the reasons and the compulsions behind why she does what she does. This is the cause of much conflict and strain on her and Theo’s relationship. Theo is also mending a heart that Sage broke.
Few questions were answered, more were presented. I think that is typical of series books. The readers do get to find out how the gangas came to be. The characters from the previous books in the series get very little play in this book. We do not get much insight into the Elite. Remy is still around and still running from the residents of Envy. I keep wondering if there is a chance we might see her and Wyatt getting a book. They certainly share Dantes well. The readers learn a little bit more about Remington Truth. Selena had a personal interaction 20 years before. (can’t tell ya, big spoiler). The bounty hunters are up to no good and Theo has the opportunity to see first-hand what happens when they visit a settlement. This book just did not have a climactic battle for the good of the new world that we have seen in the previous books.
I have really enjoyed this series. I hate that this book left me feeling, meh.
The book wraps up with Lou getting to help Vonnie move a bookshelf! Yes, this is a good thing.

If someone had told me I would really enjoy an ongoing series where, although labeled romance, that aspect kind of takes a back seat, and the setting in years in the future after an apocalyptic ‘end of the world’ scenario, I would have said ‘right, and pink pigs fly. But I would have been forced to find those flying pink pigs because I do love this series and Night Betrayed is no exception. Though the hero, Theo Waxnicki is in his 80’s, he stopped aging when the catastrophe happened fifty years earlier. I had to smile to myself as I was kind of guilty of age discrimination. Theo has quite the libido cause he still looks young, but he’s in his 80’s and I thought ‘wouldn’t he need Viagara or something?’ I have to say that in the middle of this tense story, I was distracted by something rather silly.

In the previous books, I hadn’t really warmed up to the character of Theo, so when I heard this was ‘his’ story I couldn’t help wishing it might have been someone else’s. But once I started reading this book, that was a non issue. Once more this world that Joss Ware has created is so compelling, so interesting yet so bleak at the same time, and just so damn well written, that I found myself on the edge of my seat as I read along.

In this one, Theo has been brought back to life by the heroine, Selena in a small community far from his home in Envy. Theo is smitten with Selena but just getting over a broken heart when the woman he loved chose another. Selena for her part, is leery of getting involved with Theo as she has many secrets and has been burned in the past because of them.

As with previous books though, the romantic relationship isn’t really in the forefront. Instead it’s the mystery of the events that resulted in the end of the world as it was known and what has been happening since then. And it’s utterly and completely fascinating. It’s edge of your seat exciting. People who you hope make it don’t.. This isn’t a happy and sunshine series, that’s for sure. But it’s such a compelling read that I highly recommend it. I can’t say too much so as not to give too much away – that’s the way it is with this kind of series I think.

Now – should you read the first three books in order to read this book? I’m not sure – probably. But the first ones are so good you will want to anyway.

Part of me really liked this book and part of me wished I had read the previous three books in the series because as much as I enjoyed the characters and the idea behind the devastating Change, I was a little lost at some parts.

The world Joss Ware has created is dark and dangerous and infested with Zombie-like critters who are on an eternal quest to find a man named Remington Truth. The humans who have survived live in walled villages and do their best to survive. Throw in a shady group of quasi-immortals who are up to something nefarious and a bunch of ruthless bounty hunters who thrive on the chaos the world has descended into and you have something compelling and intriguing.

My problem, if you can call it that, is that I wasn't quite sure how Theo and his buddies in Envy fit into the mythology of the world. Obviously, Theo had powers but I felt like it wasn't explained why and how he should be using it. On top of that, his death and resurrection caused his powers to glitch but I don't think it was ever addressed as to whether it was permanent or simply a temporary thing.

Now, despite all that I still enjoyed the book. The zombies weren't your usual run of the mill zombies. They were programmed to hunt for Remington Truth and would take anyone with blond hair with them while doing the usual zombie-banquet on dark haired people. Different, guys. I kinda liked it.

As far as the characters, I liked Selena. I liked that she had a crisis of faith after a zombie attack. I thought that she and Theo were pretty darn hot together. Her ability to help people transition into death was interesting. The life she had carved out for herself and the trust issues she had all made loads of sense.

All in all, I enjoyed the book, but I think it would have been a lot more fun if I had read the previous books in the series. The world here is dark and dangerous and the characters were fun. Did I mention that I was extremely intrigued by one of the bounty hunters? I was. See? Characters=fun. Even the bad guys.
