Something happened to a group of eleven-year-old orphan girls and now, years later, someone is killing them one by one in the most horrible way possible. Doyle, Camille and Russ are sent by the Damask Circle to Australia to save the ones who are still alive. And to kill whoever is responsible for the gruesome murders.

Kirby has just lost her best friend. She was the one who found what was left of her. Someone wants her dead too. The only salvation seem to lie in the hands of a man who appeared out of nowhere.
I still like it (flaws and all).

Initial Thoughts: The Damask Circle sends Doyle, Russell, and Camille to Australia to rescue 4 women targeted for death by a power-hungry witch. While I wasn't as wowed by this book as the first in the series, this was still an entertaining read. The chemistry between Doyle and his love interest Kirby was not really that convincing at first because Kirby had a lot of trust issues.

The Review:

"Death had come calling on a windblown wintry evening. It smashed past the deadbolts lining the front door, and grabbed the living with unparalleled glee, sucking the life from them until there was nothing left but husks. Then it tore the remains apart, as if determined to erase any evidence of humanity."

That certainly caught my attention and I was hooked. Circle of Death is the second book in Keri Arthur's Damask Circle series. If the book sounds familiar, it's because it was previously published in 2002. The series is being re-released with the third book Circle of Desire coming out in April. I'm glad that I had the chance to add a new paranormal romance series to my never-ending list of fun escape reads.

Circle of Death is set in present day Australia. It starts off with a horribly brutal murder and features some rather frightening and bloodthirsty shifter creatures called manerei. The manerei are after our heroine Kirby Brown as well as some of her friends from her days at an orphanage. The dapper Doyle Fitzgerald is dispatched by the Damask Circle to find and protect Kirby.

In the spirit of paranormal romance, Doyle is attracted quite early on to the lovely Kirby even though they need to stay a step ahead of the manerei and the power-hungry witch that hunts Kirby and the other girls. Doyle is an interesting character: a thief in his previous life, he has been with the Damask Circle for 12 years. Oh, and get this - he's a shifter, too. A black panther shifter - just awesome. Kirby suffers from trust issues and as more of her background is revealed, understandably so.

The romance in the story felt a little rushed. I can understand that being chased by things with sharp teeth and claws would heighten emotions, but I still felt that Doyle fell for Kirby a little bit too fast. Once these two finally get a chance to be together, they are hot!

I do like the originality of this series. The magic is intriguing and the variety of paranormal creatures keeps the series interesting. I love the idea of the Damask Circle, a group of paranormal creatures who police their own kind.

While Circle of Death did not wow me like the previous book, I am still going to continue reading the series. I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Arthur's books in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Bantam Dell for a review copy of this book.

Kirby Brown just discovered that her best friend Helen and her boyfriend were murdered. Kirby has always been afraid to trust anyone except Helen. Kirby is feeling completely lost and alone like never before. Damask Circle sent Doyle Fitzgerald to help and protect Kirby but finds himself deeply attracted to a woman that doesn't trust him at all. Kirby is the key to discovering why these women are being murdered but she doesn't remember anything. Can Kirby trust Doyle? Will Doyle earn Kirby's trust? Will the killer be stopped? Your answers await you in Circle of Death.

I'm a big fan of Keri Arthur's writing style. Her characters are troubled souls with deep passion and desire for change within themselves. I'm eager to find out what happens in the next book.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

And here is the second volume in the Damask Circle series and after a first couple, here we are with Doyle and Kirby. And as for the first novel, Doyle is a full member of the Circle, while Kirby is a young woman with powers she does not really control.

As stated in the synopsis, it only took one night for the Kirby’s life to be turned completely upside down. And when she goes home, delayed, she discovers the body of her best friend… murdered. Therefore, her life will change completely as it now seems that someone is after her, and whatever she does, she does not understand the reason. But as she tries to save her skin, she is rescued by the charming Doyle. Handsome maybe yes, but she is very far from trusting him, especially after what she is going through, and the fact that he saved her life twice does not change that. And while the culprit is getting closer, Kirby will have to make a choice and find out what lurks in her past before it catches her up. But for this, one thing is sure, she will be forced to team up with this man she knows nothing about and who makes her feel quite contradictory things.

I loved to follow these two characters. It’s true, it was still the insta-love but it’s not really a problem because we suspect that quite early in the story. However, it will take some time for Kirby to trust Doyle and this is also why she refuses to get carried away by her attraction despite the attempts of the latter. I loved seeing her strength and her stubbornness to truly understand how she feels before undertaking anything. But she is much more and it is also a strong woman that we learn to discover and yet she hides many secrets and we discover them with her through the chapters. They will help her to understand who she really is. Because indeed, Kirby changes dramatically in the novel even though her stubbornness stays the same. She does not flatten before Doyle, which is a feat in itself elsewhere. Regarding this shapeshifter, I must say that he is quite controlling and does not like to be disobeyed, though the young woman seems unwilling to listen. Thus, we have some pretty colorful situations. But of course we have some more characters and I admit that the plot surprised me a lot and I had many revelations throughout the story. I must particularly emphasize that I did not expect at all such explanations from the past of the young woman and everything was really well found.

This novel is once again a pleasant surprise and I’m curious to find out who will be put forward in the last novel.

A friend of mine bought this for me, must admit it wouldn't have been my own choice the front cover and description remind me of Kelley Armstrong of whom I am not a fan. But only realised 100 pages in that this is the second in a trilogy, would have preferred to have started at No 1 - at no point does it say this on the cover or at the beginning. Annoying. However, it doesn't make any difference to understanding the story.

The blurb on the front says "A new series that may become the most popular paranormal series in the twenty-first century." Oh dear always a red flag when books make this kind of claim and considering that it is a paperback and there are apparently 3 in the series already published we can say this is not true as I'd never heard of the author or the series until my friend gave me the book!

I didn’t warm to the characters, I found it to be a standard romance and as a fantasy nothing elevates it or makes you excited to turn the page despite the fact that Ms Arthur throws in shapeshifters, witches, vampires, and zombies into the mix. It reminds me of those old fashioned pulp horror stories that used to be published that my Dad used to have around the house when I was young. I didn’t understand the heroine who knew she was a witch and her friend Helen was one too why she acted so surprised when she found out vampires were real too its not such a leap is it? She spent most of the book claiming she wasn't worthy to be loved because she was an orphan that makes me sound so unsympathetic in the context of real life I am understanding but I've read too many Mills & Boon in the past and just let's get on with the story! I cannot say that I would recommend this series or the author myself its okay - sorry to my friend!

Circle of Death was a better experience than Circle of Fire. It seems more defined, there's an actual mystery and a more real enemy.

It also provided me with an epiphany. :) All of a sudden I realized what I found "off" in this series. I've known the later works of the very talented Ms Arthur and therefore I know them as UF. But many of her former works are, like this, PNR. Yes, they are still plot-heavy (thank god for that), but clearly romance is the name of the game.

Here there's a mate bond, never my preferred trope, but kudos to the author, the couple isn't swept by fate and has their feet planted in life :) So, there's a welcome growing into the story.
An other very welcomed point is the world, Ms Arthur is never shy on this, and she creates a world that resonates with "other".

The main negative point for me were the shaky characters. They lack the strength of their later counterparts. They are still cliched - ridden. The untested, shaky heroine with a troubled past. The male hero whose main function is to save and help her (why couldn't she save herself?)

Circle of Death is the perfect book for paranormal fans who haven't yet reached saturation. For Keri Arthur's fans is a way to connect to a beloved author, as long as we are aware these are her earlier books, quite different from her recent.

Kirby comes home to find her best friend & her best friend's boyfriend murdered. Her best friend was torn apart. When the police take her into protective custody things go from bad to worse & she escapes.

A panther shifter, Doyle, arrives in Australia with a couple of members of the Damask Circle to save the witches on a psychic withes list who are yet to be murdered.

Doyle tracks down Kirby who is on the run from an attempt to kill her & they hide and they search for to save the other witches on the list.

This was a pretty good story. There is a lot of action happening without a ton of down time. It isn't very intense, and I found the uncomfortable moments glided over rather lightly, which was surprising.

Kirby has issues that took 95% of the book to get through. Seriously!

I did find that this book could have taken place in any town in any country & lacked a certain descriptive ora. No biggie. It just made a VERY light read that was easy to get through.

Even though this book was the 2nd in the series, it read as a stand alone. I liked this book & may continue the series, but it isn't one of those that grab and pull me under all night, so I'm late for work kind of book.

Though I enjoyed this book, I didn't love it. For some reason there were all kinds of miscellaneous creatures tossed into the mix. First a manarei (whatever that is), a vampire, then a huge wolf and then zombies along with witches, a cat shifter and let's not forget ghosts. It just seemed like everything but the kitchen sink.

I did really like Doyle and Kirby (though the names are terrible). Anyway, I look forward to the conclusion of the series though again we have two new characters as hero and heroine.

It’s been about a month since I read book 1 in this trilogy, so couldn’t remember names and such but for a good portion of the book I thought I was reading about the exact same characters. The main characters were duplicated from the first book. Both males were like cave men, you stay I fight kinda thing. Both women thought they knew best and went behind the fellas back. Both received jewellery for some reason too. Some of the places, though on different continents were just lifted from the first book.

Kirby is an orphan who grew up with her childhood friend, always moving, she's fearful and untrusting and is being hunted along with several other women. Doyle is a panther shifter, who can read her mind, knows she's the one for him right away and is just too understanding about Kirby's issues. Sidekicks include an irritable witch and vampire who only drinks from animals. This wasn't one of my favorites but had some interesting moments and a couple editing issues.

Kirby comes home one day to find her roommate Helen and her boyfriend have been torn apart and then the police surveillance team sent to protect her in the motel are also killed, she's running for her life from some monster when Doyle randomly appears and saves her. Doyle(a shapeshifter) spends his time keeping tabs on Kirby because she keeps running away from him and into danger. Kirby is being hunted by the same monster that killed her friend but she wants to help make things right.
I enjoyed this one way more than book 1 because it felt more like the relationship was supposed to be a plot point which helped me care about the characters way more. Kirby is nervous and has trust issues. Doyle is oddly cocky and sweet at the same time. This was a fun read.

Parts of this book I had enjoyed, although this book and it's characters are all alike, their personalities are way too similar. For me, it was helplessly boring I can't express how upset I was when it ended the way it did. I'm not much of a fan for action based books, but I will recommend it for people out there who are.

Huh. Again, love the world building. But. At this point I think I'm just gonna have to roll with the unannounced rape stuff and general non-con if I want to keep with this author. Though this case was not explicit, so work-with able, I guess. Really wish it weren't a core story component though.

Rape and non-con just are NOT my speed.

Have you ever had a book steal your heart. And then make you want to run away with it. Well that is exactly what Keri Arthur did to me with this one. Not only did the first book in this series get me hooked on pretty much all her books but this book just continues the love that I have for her writing. Well now it's on to the next one. Happy reading.

Wow...this was even wilder than the first. Such a fast moving story. I’m really enjoying the swiftness of the books as well as the characters.

As I said before this series is lighter than her others but seriously cool and fun.

But it is a past she has no wish to remember.

Because Doyle isn’t the only one with magic in his soul.

Only her magic is capable of destroying the world.

In this I would like to begin with if you had read my previous post, the second book in this trilogy series improved vastly. This one seemed more defined, an actual mystery and more of a real enemy. While containing more of a pulse of suspense. However, with that said, there were still somethings that bothered me which was mainly the relationship - the chemistry between Doyle and Kirby.

Kirby’s past holds the key to these deaths, but she can’t remember her past. Will she remember before all is lost…the fate of the world hangs in the balance. A bit dramatic. But it does seem to fit the scenario that is presented in this world.

Camille, Russell and Doyle are members of the Damask Circle and are sent to Melbourne to prevent a vision that shows young women dying. However, they are too late to prevent the deaths when Kirby arrives in her kitchen to find her room mate and boyfriend already dead and stumbles across Doyle’s path. The team transfers Kirby to a safe house but Kirby isn’t totally defenseless being an elemental witch.

Now as I stated this one was more defined and structured. There were a lot less more plot holes and head scratching moments. Except for the zombies. Personally not a zombie fan, myself. And throwing in zombies just seemed more like a filler than any else. And as for the romance it wasn’t really better than the first one. It wasn’t until the end that I finally felt some sort of connection between Kirby and Doyle. Again slight improvement. But not a whole lot.

Overall, this book was a fun read. In the end I did enjoyed it. There were good twists and turns. A good built of suspense and mystery. An overall, enjoyable world to get lost in.

And as they say third time is the charm. I’m hoping this the case for the last book in this trilogy.

A mysterious orphan and the children she once lived with have a connection that may lead to the death of them all. Again, the urgent need to find and save the targeted victims keeps the story moving forward and there's no denying the connection these two.

PASSION REBORN

In one vicious night, Kirby Brown’s world is torn apart. Her best friend is dead, killed by a madman who is now after Kirby, and she has no idea why. When the police prove incapable of protecting Kirby, she has no choice but to trust a mysterious stranger. And while she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him, she fears the strange abilities he wields.

An investigator for the Damask Circle, Doyle Fitzgerald, has come to Melbourne, Australia, to hunt down a killer. What he doesn’t expect to find is a cadre of witches capable of controlling the elements, a sorceress determined to take that power for herself, and a broken woman who is more than she seems. Doyle is certain that the reason behind the bloodshed lies in Kirby’s past—a past she has no wish to remember. Because Doyle isn’t the only one with magic in his soul: Kirby’s special gifts have the strength to destroy the world.

Kirby comes home to find Helen, her best friend/roommate, & Helen's boyfriend Ross, murdered. Brutally murdered, to the point where even the police are disturbed. She knows in her heart that she is the one who was supposed to have been killed, not Helen. But even that can't be right since Helen told her the two of them would die in an auto accident.

Doyle, a shifter whose form is a black panther; Camille, a powerfully strong witch; and Russell, a relatively young vampire, are all members of the Circle of Damask. They've been sent down to Australia by Seline to investigate some murders relating to some sort of magical circle.

Both Helen & Kirby are products of state homes and foster homes, and both have powers. Helen was a storm witch, while the Circle suspects that Kirby is an Elemental witch. Kirby's memories of her childhood come back in fits and starts, sped up when Helen's ghost tells her she is the binder and that she must stop the fifth from their circle from killing the fourth and therefore being able to take all the powers, which would destroy the earth. This person, the fifth from their original circle, wants to control all the elements, otherwise known as the circle of five.

This whole time Kirby is being chased by all kinds of nasties, harassed by the cops, and generally just having a terrible time of it all. Doyle sticks to her like glue in an attempt to keep her alive. He ends up falling for her while working to keep her alive.

Kirby has baggage galore. She repressed most of her childhood memories, particularly of one state house where one of the male caretakers would rape the 10 & 11 year old girls night after night. He never touched Kirby because of her green eyes, calling them "Fey" eyes. It was clear he was a bit afraid of her, but not enough to stop his depraved behavior. So she still had to hear this happen each night to all the others, including Helen.

Helen grew up and lived by the motto of seizing the day, while Kirby retreated into a shell, trusting no one but Helen. No matter how often Doyle saves her butt she can't seem to bring herself to trust him. And for some unknown reason the two can read each other's thoughts, but can't read/hear others.

Kirby comes off as rather weak willed and whiny, unlike the very proactive female lead in the first book in this series. She is far more reactive, and I found that very frustrating. I understand that is part of the persona she created for herself after the one experience when she was eleven, but she's almost 30 now and it's past time for her to wake up, face facts and move forward. Letting her past dictate her present & future seems like a cowardly path to take - and I don't like my lead character (regardless of gender) to be a coward. Though she gets better, she doesn't impress me nearly as much as the female protagonist in book one. Though this book is still a fun read, it makes me wonder if the third book will suffer from the same slump or if it will lean back towards the powerful excitement of the first book.

Like the first novel, Circle of Fire, Circle of Death has a very compelling storyline and well-done mystery. I couldn't stop turning the pages to find out how the mystery will resolve and what will happen between Kirby and Doyle.

But sad to say, the flaws of this novel overwhelm the strengths of this novel.

First, Kirby as a main character did not appeal to me which resulted in me not feeling invested in her outcome. Initially, I couldn't empathise with her pigheadedness. I understood that she had been abandoned by her family and left to fend for herself as an orphan. I understood that she had been thrown off the deep end and she was traumatised by the realisation that there was a whole new world out there. But couldn't she see that Doyle was trying to help her? Why did she have to keep pushing him away. But, as the book progresses, I understood that her traumatising experience at the government facility might have resulted in her ability to trust men and herself. But still, the damage has been done. I, as a reader, was not invested in Kirby's outcome, which made this book slightly torturous to finish.

Second, it appears to me that Keri Arthur likes to write stubborn characters. Madeline Smith of Circle of Fire is stubborn. Kirby of Circle of Death is stubborn too! Are there any other kind of characters she can write? I am sick of reading one stubborn character after another. The worse thing is sometimes I just do not understand why the characters are so obstinate!

Third, an even worse thing about Keri Arthur's characters? I have yet to find one that I like that will result in me being eager to read the books. As such, this makes it difficult for me to be a fan of Keri Arthur's books. I will finish Circle of Desire, the next and last book in the series, but I would not read any more Keri Arthur books because her characters do not appeal to me.

Fourth, like the first book, this book has a pathetic amount of worldbuilding. The author just throw out names like zombie, vampire but fail to make the supernatural creature realistic. There's no information about the characters. So is the author assuming that the supernatural creatures in her books are the generic supernatural creatures? Shapeshifters have appeared in Circle of Fire and Circle of Death yet till now, I do not know why they shapeshift, how they shapeshift etc. This lack of information results in me not being able to believe in the world.Do you know what's the hallmark of a failed fantasy novel? When the reader is unable to believe in the world.

Fifth, like the first book, I do not understand why Kirby and Doyle are so attracted to each other by the 8th chapter (out of 18 chapters in the book). There's no relationship development at all! it's like, the characters met each other, they infuriate each other and bam! They can't wait to get into each others' pants! How am I supposed to believe in the relationship between the characters if the way they fall in love is so unbelievable? Is there a "mate" concept in this series? The author DID NOT INTRODUCE ANYTHING OF THE SORT! If there is, I might be able to suspend my disbelief because this is the way the world works! Furthermore, I'm not sure if I've misunderstood, but this book is marketed as an urban fantasy and not a paranormal romance. As such, I am unable to condone fast-track relationship development that is the hallmark of paranormal romance but not urban fantasy.

In conclusion, I enjoyed this novel but not as much as the first one, Circle of Fire. This is because of the many flaws I see in the novel -- some of which were apparent in the first novel, some of which became more apparent in this second novel. However, I would still recommend this novel to any urban fantasy fans because of the compelling storyline.

I would finish the last novel, Circle of Desire, in the trilogy since I've received it for review. But I would not read any more of Keri Arthur's works.

My Thoughts

Like Circle of Fire book 2 Circle Of Death focuses on one couple who are brought together during a murder investigation by Damask Circle members.

However this time found myself totally delighted with both main characters as they clicked for me immediately upon being introduced to them, this in turn made the story much more enjoyable as it unfolded.

The writing also seemed to be smoother as the plot pacing and the way in which different story threads were connected flowed better as did the development of both Kirby and Doyle as their story lines were exposed, the two manage to uncover clues to the killer they are seeking as well as a relationship that is more believable since they do not instantly act upon their attraction to each other but let it develop a little more naturally as they spend time together.

Just like lots of other romantic suspense this one takes place in a short period of time but manages to impart a lot of action, tense moments as well as some surprises that keep you wanting to find out what comes next which all ties together to create a reading experience that is very easy to follow.

While there is a lot going on in this book that gives us glimpses into both Doyle and Kirby’s past it adds to the reality of the story and as things build every new reveal brings us closer to why Kirby is one of the women targeted by the killer.

Like first book in the series this book can be read as a stand alone since it concludes without a cliffhanger ending of any kind, a fact that I am particularly fond of as so many series lead from one book to the next.

The heroine is devastated when her only friend, the women who's been by her side since their days in the orphanage, is murdered-and not just murder but mutilated and eaten. The heroine is a loner, her issues with trust and abandonment make it hard for her to get close to anyone and when her friend dies, she is essentially alone in the world. Lost in the haze of grief, she suddenly has no time to think or mourn her friend’s death as she is being hunted by the creatures responsible. Now all he has to do is convince the heroine of that.

This was yet another great book from this author. I enjoy this series of what I've read so far but I find myself still waiting for a spark. Something just seems to be missing that will take it from good to amazing. and I don't know what it is. I struggled with liking the heroine at first because of her running and her blind ignorance to the magic around her despite the fact that she grew up with her friend who was a witch. On one hand I understood not trusting just some dude who shows up saying he'll protect you but the guy fights zombie’s lizard creatures and vampires to save you multiple times, I think at some point you'll just going to have to trust him. And she did, but It just came way too late in my opinion. I enjoyed the hero's humor and his general easy-going personality. I enjoyed the fight scenes and the action. I thought the chemistry was average with the character only kissing a couple of time and only freaking once-granted the book took place within a 48-hour span so I guess the time frame didn't allow for a lot of sex. Another good book and a pleasing read.

One night, when Kirby Brown is late home from work, she comes home to find her whole world torn apart in a vicious attack, leaving her best friend Helen and her boyfriend dead. Now the murderer is after Kirby, but she has no idea why. Taken in to protective custody by the Police, it soon becomes clear that the Police are unequipped to protect her from the forces after her, while the murderer attacks the Police men looking after her, she manages to escape. Kirby runs straight in to a very handsome and mysterious stranger, sent to protect her. Kirby has to trust him, but trust doesn't come easily to her after the life she's lead. Kirby is inexplicably drawn to him, but she fears the strange abilities he wields. Like the fact he can shift in to a panther.

Doyle Fitzgerald is an investigator for the Damask Circle, and he's come to Australia to hunt down a killer. He never expected to find a whole group of witches capable of controlling the elements, a sorceress determined to take all that power for herself, and get some revenge at the same time, and a broken woman who is more than she seems. Doyle is certain that the reason behind the murders, and the killers interest in Kirby, is tied in to Kirby's past, a past she's blocked out and doesn't remember, and has no wish to remember. Doyle isn't the only one with magic in his soul; Kirby's special gifts have the power to destroy the world.

I'm a huge Keri Arthur fan, and I really enjoyed the first Damask Circle book, so I was excited to start reading Circle of Death, and I must say, I loved it even more than fire! I think Doyle and Kirby may be my favourites so far!

I loved the character of Kirby, herself and Doyle where written with a lot of depth, and Kirby's past and the events that happened to her where dealt with in a realistic and respectful way. I thought Kirby was quite a strong character, considering everything that happened to her, she's brave enough to do what she needs to do instead of just hiding from the world. I loved Doyle as well, and his determination, and protectiveness.

I thought the relationship with Doyle and Kirby is the best out of the two Damask Circle books I've read so far, I just had such a connection with both characters. The relationship between Kirby and Doyle was more realistic, and plausible. The build up of the attraction between the two, while being set over 2 days, was done very well, and just made sense.

The plot was just as intriguing as the one in Circle of Fire, and the overall book was stronger than Fire. The plot for Death kept me engaged from the first page, and kept me reading all the way until the end. There where threads tied to Kirby, that you weren't expecting, or at least, I wasn't expecting. I think the plot was very well thought out, and the way the murders linked to Kirby was very well done, especially as you find out as the characters find out, bit by bit.

Circle of Death is darker than Circle of Fire, and a lot stronger as a story. Kirby's reasons behind her lack of trust are very clear, and the plot was engaging as well as dark. The romance is compelling, and it's a fairly easy read that you can enjoy again and again. I'm seriously loving Kirby and Doyle, and i'm excited to do the review for the next Damask Circle book, as I have a feeling these books will just get better and better!

I was anxiously waiting to have the chance to read the second volume of the trilogy A Damask Circle, and thanks to Netgalley I was able to do so. I had great expectations towards this book, although I knew I wouldn't find the characters that I felt in love with in the first volume of this series. Still, I was ready to let them go and get to know new characters.

Once again, Keri Arthur did it. I was overwhelmed. The reading of this book was quite similiar to the previous one: at the beginning, it was a very slow reading, and then, all of sudden, I just couldn't finish it soon enough, because I was so hooked. I'm not saying that the beginning is less good than the rest; it just happened to be that way.
The story of Circle of Death is like the one in Circle of Fire but... completely different. Again, we have this couple with supernatural powers, we have a lot of ritualistic murderers to solve and to avoid and yet... I am pretty sure this book is so much better than the first one.
The plot is a lot more dark. A killer that kills his victims to complete a ritual, somehow connected to magic, victims that were chosen years ago. Revenge? Power? And who is the real killer? It's very tense, and you start to discover a few darker details of the story, always so creepy. I liked this eerie touch, and this makes me yearn for the next book even more. The rythm is really intense, full of action, but there's always room for romance.
As much as it costs me to admit... the characters in this book are so much better than those in the first one. It costs me because I was totally in love with Jon and Maddie, and I believe I will always have a soft spot for them, maybe because Circle of Fire was my first experience with Keri Arthur. But Kirby and Doyle... wow. Just wow. Their relationship is overwhelming, it grows quickly and we always want more. Their moments alone are very hot, and the way Keri describes them, sexy yet tender, is really good. Just so you can have a little glimpse of their relation, I'll give you a little spoiler, that won't change the surprise of the story: Kirby and Doyle can read each other minds. You can figure out what will come out of here!
I'm really sorry that Keri Arthur isn't translated into Portuguese. As much as I could find in the internet, she is loved in a lot of different countries, and I'm sorry no one in Portugal wants to bring her here. She's an amazing writer, and although she uses old formulas, she writes beautiful stories, creates unforgettable characters and has lovely books. I hope that, as soon as I finish this trilogy, I am able to read more of her works, because I have a feeling that she is one of those authors who I'll always like. Besides, this trilogy is seriously becoming one of my favourite fantasy works.

Of course I recommend Circle of Death, and you can read it anytime, even if you didn't read Circle of Fire. It's a very good reading, a powerful story and amazing characters. Now I can't wait to read Circle of Desire!

Circle of Death.A Damask Circle Book: 2. Keri Arthur
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews.
This series is definitely becoming a favourite. I love the Nikki and Michael books, and this series takes characters from The Circle mentioned in those books, and focusses on one person each time. This time we meet Doyle, panther shape-shifter as the main one, along with vampire Russell and witch Camille from the Circle and Kirby as the person who's life is in danger, and who is about to get an introduction into what lives in the world besides humans...
I love this series, full of the fast actions and intense plots we've come to expect from Keri, we also have a deeper romantic side to these books. As a romance lover that works well for me :) the romance isn’t sappy though as in some books, and the plots are still well written and thought out, and not subject to the “new powers” phenomenon that too many writers use. You know the sort, where the lead discovers some new power just at the right moment to save everybody. Its fine occasionally, but too often becomes the default and I feel cheated. Keri's characters are thorough though, we learn about them as we go along and they stay mainly true to accepted type, so when they're in a dangerous situation we readers are holding our breath wondering how they're going to get out.
This book – like the first – is full of action, from the murders right at the start, to the climatic ending. Its edge of seat action all the way, and wrapped up in the developing romance between Kirby and Russell it kept me engrossed til the end. Its a series that's joining my keepers file. Its a great mix of emotion and danger, action and adventure and with personalities I really engaged with. When they were in danger I was worried, when they were sad I felt like crying and when things went well I had a smile on my face. I understood Kirby's hesitation at moving forward with Russell, she's only just discovered her supernatural abilities are more than she ever though, that there are others in the world as well as human, shape-shifter, vampires and zombies – having a too close experience with them is enough to put anyone off. Then she's feeling attracted to Russell and he to her, but he's a shape-shifter. That's a lot to take in and though he's sure, she's not and more cautious. Despite that though there's some sensual scenes between the two when they have a small break from the dangers :) Carpe Diem ad all that!
If you like Keri's other books I’m sure you'll love these. They’re full of her trademark intensity, well written plots that work together and serve a purpose, not ones just thrown in for some action, and with characters that feel real. If you've not read any of her books this series would be a great one to start with, especially if like me you love a thread of romance among the action. As with others in the series the price is £5.49/$8.91 for 304 pages, not cheap but excellent quality writing that will bear re reading to add value for money.
Stars: five – great read.

Kirby’s life has just collapsed around her – after a life of constantly running from the threats her best friend Helen can see in the future, those threats have finally found them. Helen, the one person she had in her life is dead – and whatever dark force killed her is now hunting Kirby.

The Damask Circle are aware that there are magical slayings going on and Camille, Russell and Doyle have been sent to investigate; Doyle to guard Kirby while they figure out what is going on. Of course insta-attraction hits.

The force threatening them is far closer tied to Kirby than they imagined – but to fight it they need to dig into her mysterious, and painful past.

I love the Damask Circle world's potential. It’s crammed full of supernaturals, vividly described and handled powers and lots of cunning nefarious plots around the world that need uncovering and foiling. It’s International rescue, with vampires and werewolves.

You could tell so many awesome stories with this world – and I can kind of see them. But they’re obscured so much by a very very dull romance. And that dull romance completely overwhelms any kind of world building (can anyone explain the telepathy between the main characters in this book? Anyone?) so more sexy times can be crammed in

The problem is that things are feeling a little formulaic – both in terms of Keri Arthur’s books and in terms of the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance genre in general

The female protagonist is vulnerable and uncertain (in this book, newly shaken by a murder) – she has had an unhappy and/or outright tragic childhood (in this book, she’s an orphan with an abusive past) which has left her with few family ties or support (orphan) and those either dubious or soon to be uprooted.

She is sexually highly inexperienced (in this book her trauma makes her too uncertain with men), having few past lovers and those being extremely dissatisfactory or outright abusive.

She has some deep, powerful woo-woo but doesn’t understand its full potential and is probably afraid of it and runs from it or avoids it. But with the male hero’s reassurance and guidance she gains more confidence in her power

Despite having deep and powerful woo-woo she is completely ignorant of the supernatural world until the male hero arrives to open her eyes and then play guide (despite every other child in her foster home having woo-woo, she was still ignorant). Her woo-woo will be magic, his woo-woo is more likely to be related to physical prowess (she’s a witch, he’s a werepanther).

Over the course of 10 minutes, they will fall deeply, madly in love and be engaged by the book’s end – after about a week of knowing each other (2 days. Two. Seriously. This is dubiously explained by Doyle’s father and grandfather also proposing to complete strangers – which somehow makes this better). At most.
