35559 Nothing But Reading Challenges
A Sign of the Times Reading Challenge: Chinese Zodiac Edition
Duration:
6/21/2019 - 6/20/2020

Progress: 96 out of 96

This challenge lasts for 1 year from the date you start

The original A Sign of Time Challenge was a very big hit in our group last year. Lisarenee and I wanted to give members a new challenge that was somewhat similar to the original, yet completely different and ‘spicy’. Because the Chinese Zodiac is divided into twelve years instead of twelve months, we had to get a bit creative. Members are free to participate in one or both sign of times challenges if they are up to the challenge. ;) This challenge will last for a year.

What is the Chinese Zodiac?
Unlike regular zodiac, the Chinese Zodiac Astrology circulates in the span of twelve years instead of twelve months. Each year is represented by an animal and each animal represents certain personalities. The animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
Please note that because the Chinese Zodiac is measured in the span of 12 years (and not twelve months) we will be assigning each animal to a specific month. Since the rat appears first on the Chinese calendar, it will be assigned the month of January; the Buffalo appears second so it will be assigned to the month of February and so on…

Vacation Destination Reading Challenge
Duration:
6/21/2019 - Til Done!

Progress: 0 out of 32+
Day tripper = 1 book
Weekend getaway = 3 books
Week trip = 7 books
Month long getaway = 8 to 31 books
Around the World in 360 days = 32 + books

I like to think of books as mini vacations that don't cost an awful lot. It was that thought that inspired this challenge. (Thanks to Lisarenee for the original idea)

Duration- You choose!

This challenge let's you take your own mini vacation via books, so find books that take place in destinations you'd like to visit. Make sure to pick your destination(s) and the duration of your journey.

I think you get the picture. You can have more than one destination or just read books which touch on different tourist spots but in the same country/city. You decide. Just pick your destination(s) and set sail, take flight, etc., but whatever you do make sure you take your book and have fun.

35559 Nothing But Reading Challenges
A Sign of the Times Reading Challenge
Duration:
6/21/2019 - 6/20/2020

Progress: 77 out of 77

This challenge lasts for 1 year from the date you start

Here's a challenge that changes as the year goes on because you read the current astrological sign for the time period you're in.

What is an astrological sign?
According to Wikipedia, "In Western astrology the zodiac of twelve signs represents twelve types of personality. The zodiac traditionally begins with Aries."

How do I play?
You read the letters of the sign associated with the time frame you're currently in. The letter must correspond to the first letter of a title, the first letter of an author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first or last name from the book. Just let us know what the link to the letter is if it's not obvious. You may ignore the 'A', 'An', 'The', etc. at the beginning of titles to get to the first significant word. So "The Virgin's Secret" would be a 'V' title and "A Highlander Christmas" would be an 'H' title. (Thanks for the example BJ Rose) Once you get through all the signs you may start over again and read different books or re-read books you've read before. As long as you read. Since our current date falls with the time period of July 23 to August 22 (The sign of Leo) We will read Leo by spelling it out.

Here are the 12 signs and their respective dates:
June 22 to July 22 - Cancer (6)

35559 Nothing But Reading Challenges
American Ninja Warrior
Duration:
6/21/2019 - Til Done!

Progress: 0 out of ?

"Sasuke is a Japanese sports entertainment television special in which 100 competitors attempt to complete a four-stage obstacle course. An edited version, named Ninja Warrior, is screened in at least 18 other countries. To date, Sasuke content has been aired in 157 countries."

"American Ninja Warrior is a sports entertainment competition spin-off of the Japanese television series Sasuke, in which competitors try to complete a series of obstacle courses of increasing difficulty called "stages". The series began on December 12, 2009, in Los Angeles, with the top 10 competitors moving on to compete at "Mount Midoriyama" in Japan. Beginning with season 4, competitors travel to the Las Vegas strip to compete on a nearly identical "Mount Midoriyama" course."

This Challenge is based off the 2015 Finals / 2015 USA vs. the World course of American Ninja Warrior. If you haven't watched a version of Sasuke / ANW before, in the next post, I've posted links to 4 of the 5 guys listed and their run for each stage.

Can you run the full course and scale Mt Midoriyama?
Basics ~
-- Choose a Contestant
-- Read your way through the obstacles using the options given
-- Options for each will decrease (making it harder) as each stage is passed
-- Finish the course by reading all the books (37) & not having a DNF or rating a 1 star

Challenge begins when you sign up, using books completed after you've joined in. Runs for as long as needed, no time limit, but MUST be completed in order.

How to do this challenge ~
1: Pick a Contestant
----- These 5 guys were the contestants during the 2015 USA vs the World challenge and 2 became the first American Ninja Warriors in 2015. Choose your contestant by reading a book with the author or main character's first name being the same (spelling too) as the contestant you have chosen.

2: Read your Way through the course
----- Stage 1 has 8 obstacles. In Stage 1, each obstacle has FOUR choices to choose from in which you can read to get through that obstacle.

----- Stage 2 has 6 obstacles. In Stage 2, each obstacle has THREE choices to choose from in which you can read to get through that obstacle.

----- Stage 3 has 8 obstacles. In Stage 3, each obstacle has TWO choices to choose from in which you can read to get through that obstacle.

For Stages 1, 2 & 3 ~
*** Each stage AND obstacle MUST be read in order.
*** Choose just ONE option for each obstacle to read/do
*** If you are unable to finish a book, or you rate a book a 1, your contestant has fallen on the course. You must pick a new contestant and start the course over.

----- Stage 4 is Mount Midoriyama
*** You climb Mount Midoriyama by Spell-it-Out. Use TITLES to spell out ---
"Mount Midoriyama"
*** The spell-it-out does NOT have to be done in order.
*** As always, you may skip any "A, An or The"
*** Requires all new books, no books used already can count
*** If you are unable to finish a book, or you rate a book a 1, your contestant has fallen on the course. You must pick a new contestant and start the course over.
