Collected Hits
There are at least five Hilda books. Each one comprises a complete story arc, but the six also establish a larger continuing story. If you think of those five books as "albums", then this new book is composed of various "tracks" from the first of them that have been arranged to tell the beginning of that overall story.
So, while the first Hilda book is about a rock troll, and the second Hilda book is about the Elf community around Hilda's home, this book just condenses those two complete stories and hints at the other stories to come. On the one hand that makes this book basically a single volume summary of the Hilda tales to date, but on the other hand that necessarily means that those tales have lost a certain amount of charm and depth, since they have had to be condensed pretty dramatically.
To continue the album analogy, if you own all of the original albums, maybe you don't need the collected hits. But, if you want to introduce Hilda to someone or get them caught up or aren't willing to commit to buying five different books, this is a fine way to get a broad sense of Hilda and her world.
This is the tie-in to the upcoming TV show based on the books, and so it almost had to lose a little bit in its development journey. That said, this book does a surprisingly good job of fairly presenting Hilda. It is a bit more text based than the originals, and that text is not by Hilda's creator, Luke Pearson. The illustrator is new as well. But, the drawings are remarkably close to Pearson's style, and the text is especially faithful to Pearson's storytelling. Unless you're a superfan of the originals you might not even notice the difference. (So maybe this is like an accomplished "tribute" album?)
The big picture, though is that Hilda is an admirable and very appealing character - energetic, observant, assertive, independent, resourceful, and kind-hearted. Any Hilda is better than no Hilda, and this book is a perfectly fine way to meet her, to become acquainted with her charms, and to enjoy her adventures.

Postupně se dostávám ke knihám, které mám doma už nějakou tu chvíli. A to především díky tomu, že nepřijímám recenzáky. Knížka Hilda a pidilidi na mě v polici čekala od prosince 2018, což mě až zarazilo, ale co, až teď na ni nastal čas. Hilda je moje oblíbenkyně, komiksy o nebojácné holce a jejích dobrodružstvích mám opravdu rád, pak se mě bavil i seriál na Netflixu, který natočili podle komiksové předlohy. No ale číst to samé ještě v beletrizované verzi už bylo nadbytečné, pamatoval jsem i detaily, takže to pro mě bylo jen jako opakování. Hildu a pidilidi jsem poslouchal jako audioknihu, což bylo zajímavé zpestření, v běžné podobě bych to snad ani nedočetl. Jak říkám, Hildu mám rád, ale zůstanu u komiksů, takže tu oranžovou knížečku v pozadí už ani číst nebudu. Každopádně jsou obě krásně zpracované.

Jag har börjat (om det inte redan har märkts) att läsa en del böcker som är både bortom personlig preferens och målgrupp det här året. Mest i researchsyfte så att jag ska veta vad jag snackar om på mitt jobb. En svag punkt har varit barn- och ungdomsböcker, i synnerhet mellanstadieåldern. Provade den här. En bok som är en lättsammare men inte lika vitsig version av Adventure Time. Var inget jag älskade direkt. Nåja. Nu var den läst i alla fall.

Mi primera aproximación con el personaje de Hilda fue en la novela gráfica Hilda y el Trol, primera entrega de una serie de cómics originalmente publicados por Nobrow Press. Esta serie nos presenta a una niña aventurera que está encantada con su vida en el campo. Este paraje inexplorado que perfectamente podría estar en la parte más profunda de Europa del Norte es hogar también de criaturas misteriosas y seres fantásticos que harán más amenos los días de Hilda.
Lo que más disfruté de ese libro —aparte de las ilustraciones, son maravillosas— fue la influencia del folclore escandinavo en el escenario y personajes, incluso me trajo reminiscencias de la caricatura Hora de aventura. Sin embargo, Hilda y el Trol me quedó corta. No me encariñé con la protagonista, no me reí lo suficiente con la historia y ni siquiera me propuse leer las siguientes entregas.
Cuando me enteré que sus aventuras se extenderían a una serie middlegrade no me entusiasmé demasiado —creo que lo único mg que he leído en mi vida han sido los dos primeros libros de Harry Potter, entiendan mi nulo interés por el género—, pero por cuestiones de la vida llegó a mis manos un ejemplar de Hilda y el pueblo oculto y este era tan bonito que hasta me dieron ganas de leerlo. Quién diría que la superficialidad traería algo bueno a mi vida. En este primer tomo, la tranquilidad en la rutina de Hilda y su mamá se ve interrumpida cuando empiezan a llegar a su casa notificaciones de elfos invisibles —y furiosos— que exigen se marchen del valle en el que habitan.
El texto está a cargo de Stephen Davies y es muy fiel al estilo de Luke Pearson, creador del personaje y las aventuras originales en las que se basa este libro. Como el formato se presta a una historia más larga, siento que podemos conocer más a Hilda y su pasión por las aventuras. No es la niña dulce y tierna que la selección natural pondría como protagonista de una serie como esta, y por lo mismo funciona. La relación que tiene con su mamá es encantadora y la historia que se va desarrollando con otros personajes me dejó muy contenta. Lo que más disfruté de la serie original, la presencia de mitología, se mantiene en este libro y, a mi parecer, da mayor juego. La cotidianidad con la que Hilda se relaciona con su entorno mágico es muy tierna y da pie a escenas realmente entretenidas, de un humor muy ácido y absurdo —nuevamente, me hizo recordar Hora de aventura y qué mejor piropo que ese—.
Las ilustraciones, por otro lado, palidecen si las comparo con las de la novela gráfica, que estaban a cargo también de Pearson. La edición en español de la serie gráfica estuvo a cargo de Bárbara Fiore, una editorial que cuida cada detalle de sus libros infantiles y suele apostar por los formatos grandes. Hilda y el trol es inmensa y ambiciosa, se pasea por una gama de colores maravillosa y las ilustraciones son amazing. Por su lado, Hilda y el pueblo oculto tiene sus interiores a dos tintas en un estilo de ilustración que es muy similar al de Pearson, pero a dos tintas —marrón y amarillo— y menor escala y detalle. Vamos, que la historia no requiere de más, pero si vienes de leer, como yo, la novela gráfica, vas a sentir el bajón.
Mi otra pega es más contundente, y es que no puedo evitar sentir que el concepto en el que se basa Hilda da para muchísimo más. Las criaturas fantásticas, el escenario y el humor son geniales, pero no llegan a estar on point. Sin exagerar, con un tratamiento diferente Hilda podría ser the next big thing, ¿saben? La Matilda —guardando distancias— de los postcentenials. Pero siempre falta algo... y a mí me deja un sinsabor. En general, una historia muy tierna y divertida que sé pudo ir mucho más allá.

Bu kitap dizinin ilk iki bölümünü içeriyor. Dizi çok yüzeysel işlenmiş çoğu olayı koymamışlar veya değiştirmişler. Ben kitabı diziden daha çok beğendim.
Onun dışında kitabın cildine, baskısına, çevirisine herşeyine bayıldım. Son zamanlarda verdiğim paranın hakkını alamadığım o kadar çok kitap okudum ki.. Kitapta emeği geçen herkesi kutlarim.

Tak jo - pokud neznáte komiks a pokud jste neviděli seriál na Netflixu, tak si přidejte tu jednu chybějící hvězdičku. Pokud to ale máte za sebou (jedno, druhé či dokonce oboje), tak to na plný počet hvězdiček jednoduše není, protože knížka až na pár momentů nic nového nepřináší, což zamrzí, ale zase se to dalo čekat - přece jen je to už třetí verze téhož a u dětských titulů se asi nedá příliš čekat intertextovost či přiznané pomrkávání na čtenáře.
Mít doma jako první tuhle knížku, tak si to děti určitě užily víc, takhle jsme to sice dočetli, ale bez velkého nadšení a občasného konstatování dcery, že "je to nuda." Takže pokud doma žádnou Hildu nemáte, tak tohle není vůbec špatná volba. Pokud ale ano, tak je tohle tak trochu zbytečnost.
Původně jsem chtěla dát jen tři hvězdičky, ale pak jsem si řekla, že by to bylo ke knížce nespravedlivé, fakt není vůbec špatná, jen pro nás už trošku obehraná - a tak nakonec tedy čtyři hvězdičky.
Kontext: Seriál na Netflixu je opravdu povedený - děti na něj koukají v anglickém originále a vůbec jim to nevadí :-)
První věta: "Foukal vítr."
Poslední věta: "Válely se spolu v záři táboráku a vřeštěly smíchy, jako by je vůbec nic netrápilo."

Read this book in Dutch, will write a review in English. This was a lot of fun!
I am giant big fan of the Hilda series. I read the graphic novels 2 times, saw the Netflix show twice, and was definitely eager to try out this book series as well. It was warned that it would be pretty much the same as the Netflix show, but I knew I wouldn't mind it. Anything to go back to Hilda's very interesting world of awesomeness.
In this one we follow the events of the first two episodes. We meet Hilda as she explores the mountains surrounding her tiny house. We see her meet a troll (girl, really, you should not disappear so much in drawing when so close to dangerous things), and then we see how Hilda and her mom are under attack from the elves (I am still not a fan of those critters, I mean come on, if you guys just showed yourself and maybe explained that Hilda and her mom are smackdab in the elf territory I am sure they would have understood. Instead you guys are being mean and rude.). I loved that Hilda wasn't going to let some elves run over her and her mom. And her precious home that is in the middle of nature. She sets out to fix things, with the help of a new friend, Alfur who is an elf. Their adventure to set things right go very far and I loved it. I loved how Hilda didn't shy away from any adventure and any riddle set in front of her.
In the meantime we meet a big giant, or at least for most of the book Hilda just sees him pop up around midnight and sees big footsteps. He will be part of the story much more later on and get entangled with the elf story.
We also get a first glimpse at Trollberg, as Hilda's mom is out looking for a new home. You may just imagine Hilda's reactions to it, and I could understand. She only knows all the freedom, no school, no restrictions, just pure nature and all the magic. She can explore as much as her heart wants and Trolberg does mean no more of that. Or at least.. that is what Hilda thinks. Those of use who have seen and read the series know that Hilda's adventures will continue and get more wild than she may every have expected.
I loved how well this was written. Yes, it was the story from the series, but it also had a different vibe along with the already present vibe that I know and love from the series (GN and Netflix). I flew through the book and before I knew it I was at the end of the book. All I want now is more of it. More of this series. Because despite it following the series to the letter it was just fabulous. And another way to tide me over to the next season that is set to come in 2020.
There are also illustrations throughout and I loved them. They made the story come to life even further and made it so much fun.
All in all, I need the rest of this series and I hope that this author will keep on writing as there are plenty of episodes and story left to tell. I would recommend this one to everyone.

Una historia muy tierna y divertida, conocía los cómics de Hilda pero nunca había leído ninguno. Y puede que me animé a hacerlo porque esta pequeña historia me ha gustado mucho.

Hilda en het verborgen volk is het eerste boek in de serie over Hilda. Er is al een serie op Netflix over Hilda. Hilda woont in een vallei waar ook veel andere wezens wonen. Zo is haar beste vriend een voshertje en wonen er ook woefs in de vallei.
Hilda en haar moeder worden steeds lastig gevallen door onzichtbare wezens. Op een dag schrijft Hilda een brief terug en dan komt ze in contact met een van de wezens. Het blijkt een elf te zijn. Als ze een formulier tekent, dan kan ze de elfen wél zien. Er blijken er heel veel te wonen en haar moeder en zij wonen “in de weg”.
Om te voorkomen dat de elfjes hun huis verwoesten, gaat Hilda op avontuur om de koning van de elfjes te vinden. Lukt het haar om op tijd een oplossing te vinden? Ondertussen helpt ze ook de Middernachtreus met zijn probleem.
Hilda en het verborgen volk is een erg leuk boek om voor te lezen (vanaf groep 3) en samen te lezen. De illustraties zijn namelijk ook erg mooi! Alle illustraties hebben een gele ondertoon waardoor het niet “saai” zwart-wit is. Hilda leert je om niet op te geven en dat er altijd een oplossing is.

It was an ok kids fantasy story about a blue-haired girl named Hilda who discovers there's an awful lot of she wasn't aware of right outside her own house. It felt a little flat to me - from perusing the other reviews, I wonder if I'd find the original graphic novel more appealing?

This was so freakin cute! First of all, I would die for Twig. Also, i want a deer fox and I want one now. But I guess that's beside the point. This was a really cute story mostly about how humans kinda suck. At least that's what I took from it. Highly recommend to adults that like MG books. And to basically all kids and tweens. Hilda is fun, and brave, and kind. I seriously cannot wait for the Netflix show!

Really cute, but takes some of the whimsy, visual wonder, and humour away through being pretty sparse in the writing - these stories and characters definitely work better in the graphic novel/animation formats.

,,Hildę” autorstwa Luke’a Pearsona kojarzyłam głównie przez serial animowany Netflixa, który od dawien dawna miałam zapisany do oglądnięcia. Potem przyszły dwie książki do pracy, które oczywiście zakupiłam bo coś ciągnęło mnie do tych historii. Ale dopiero niedawno (bo w czwartek) sięgnęłam po ,,Hildę i Wielką Paradę” i z miejsca się zakochałam w tej opowieści. Następnie odpaliłam serial i przepadłam totalnie.
O czym są te książki? Jak sam tytuł wskazuje o Hildzie, która jest poszukiwaczką przygód mieszkającą razem z mamą na odludnym pustkowiu. Można by pomyśleć, że to brzmi jak koszmar, ale głównej bohaterce to zupełnie nie przeszkadza. Uwielbia spędzać czas zwiedzając kolejne nieodkryte wcześniej terytoria i uwieczniać je w swoim szkicowniku a także rozwiązywać wszelkie zagadki. Zawsze towarzyszy jej w tych wyprawach Lisojeleń Rożek. Dziewczynka uwielbia dowiadywać się nowych rzeczy, zaprzyjaźniać się z różnymi istotami i nie boi się niczego a przynajmniej tak twierdzi.
,,Hilda i ukryjcy” jest wprowadzeniem w ten świat. Niesamowicie ciekawą, lekką i wciągającą historią, podczas której poznajemy całe mnóstwo postaci jak uwielbiające wszelką dokumentację i formularze elfy (uwielbiam Alfura), trolle, które za dnia są skałami, ale po zachodzie słońca ożywają czy tajemnicze olbrzymy albo puchate Fofle (uwielbiam!) idealne do podniebnych przejażdżek. Momentalnie można wciągnąć się w wir niecodziennych wydarzeń, w które życie poszukiwaczki przygód obfituje aż za bardzo. Negocjacje z elfami żeby nie doszło do eksmisji domu Hildy? Zbadanie zagadki olbrzyma, który pojawia się o północy? A może pomoc krukowi, który stracił pamięć i nie wie kim jest, ale coś czuje, że kimś bardzo ważnym? Proszę bardzo. Nasza bohaterka niczego się nie lęka.
W kolejnej książce, czyli wspomnianej już ,,Hildzie i Wielkiej Paradzie” przenosimy się do Trollbergu, gwarnego miasta, do którego zmuszone zostały przeprowadzić się Hilda z mamą po pewnych końcowych wydarzeniach z poprzedniego tomu. Zmiana otoczenia nie jest do końca w smak bohaterce. Mocno tęskni za swoim pustkowiem i nie do końca umie się przystosować. Miasto i chodzenie do szkoły wydaje się straszniejsze niż trolle, ognisty smok i kawaleria królików razem wzięte. Na szczęście Hilda może liczyć na pomoc nowo poznanych znajomych z klasy oraz niezastąpionego Alfura i Rożka.
Za warstwę tekstową odpowiada Stephen Davies a za przecudowne i niesamowicie klimatyczne ilustracje Seaerra Miller. Polecam wam te książki bardzo serdecznie jeśli szukacie czegoś lekkiego i wciągającego. Serial na Netflixie również jest wart uwagi. Odcinki są krótkie, mają dwadzieścia kilka minut (idealne do śniadania) a oprawa graficzna i muzyczna jest przecudowna.

Hilda è una bambina allegra e fantasiosa, ama disegnare e ha uno spirito gentile e avventuroso.
Un giorno gli elfi decidono di scacciare via di casa lei e sua madre perché l’abitazione si trova nei loro territori.
La nostra protagonista non si scoraggia, non vuole abbandonare quel posto incantato che ama esplorare e così, insieme al suo fidato Twig e all’elfo Alfur, decide di andare dal re degli elfi per risolvere la spiacevole situazione.
Questa storia è una vera boccata di aria fresca: leggera, tenera, originale e con tanti elementi fantastici. La trama semplice e simpatica nasconde vari messaggi e una inaspettata storia d’amore. Ho adorato i vari personaggi originali come l’animale che accompagna sempre Hilda, Twig un fedele e coraggioso volpecerbiatto, l’omino di legno che ama leggere e tante altre creature incantate e bizzarre.
La protagonista non si può non adorare e penso che ognuno di noi possa riconoscere una parte di sé o un frammento della propria infanzia leggendo di Hilda.
Nel libro ci sono delle illustrazioni con una predominanza di linee tonde che rendono le atmosfere e i disegni teneri.
Una storia delicata e divertente che tratta sul potere dell’immaginazione e sulla convivenza pacifica. Adatto per un pubblico di ragazzi e per chi, come me, adora tuffarsi nelle storie fantastiche.

Ik kan mij heel goed voorstellen dat kinderen dit boek (en/of de Netflix serie) leuk vinden. Prettig lettertype, mooi vormgegeven, korte hoofdstukken, illustraties met mooie kleuren die bij het verhaal horen en vooral een wat toverachtige verhaal met trollen, elfen, reuzen. Prima kinderboek!
Ikzelf vond het iets minder. Heel veel bijzondere figuren in één verhaal en veel gebruik van hoofdletters wat ik niet prettig vond lezen. Ook vond ik het apart dat Hilda in deze fantasiewereld ineens een broodje komkommer uit haar tas haalde en haar moeder ‘gewoon’ grafisch ontwerper is. Daarbij lijkt ze op een redelijk verlaten vallei te wonen, maar als ze hun huis uit worden gejaagd gaan ze in een dorpje verderop kijken naar een nieuw huis en een school. Ging ze dan eerst niet naar school? In mijn ogen niet helemaal realistisch, maar het belangrijkste blijft natuurlijk dat kinderen hier wel van smullen. Daar gaat het om, dus voor hen goed nieuws dat er ook een deel 2 komt!

I absolutely love Hilda's adventures! They're always so cute and action packed. I am always excited to see where her curiosity will lead her and her friends next. However, this book was a bit repetitive to the show. I much preferred watching the show to reading the book. Especially because you'd have to wait a long time for the second novel to come out. Whereas, you can watch all the episodes that are currently out, which go way beyond the book. I will definitely be reading the comic next though! I think that goes even farther than the tv series. Hilda to me, is basically like British Gravity Falls (another show which I absolutely adored!). However, if you do not have Netflix I suppose this book is the next best thing. I highly recommend this series no matter how you watch it, read it, whatever. Its amazing!

This is a chapter book tie-in with the Netflix cartoon, which is itself based on the series of graphic novels by Luke Pearson. The text is great -- laugh out loud funny in parts -- and liberally illustrated with Pearson's awesome art. All of this makes it a cut above your typical "based on the TV show" book.

I read this to my 8 year old daughter and we fell in love with the series. It's so great, such a good compliment to the Netflix show.
The art is unique, the fantasy world that the author built up is engaging & the storylines teach great lessons on being unique, standing up for yourself, going on adventures and being honest.

Mijn overbuurmeisje heeft genoten van dit boek, maar ik vond het een beetje teveel bijzondere figuren in één verhaal. Gelukkig is het een kinderboek en is het de bedoeling dat kinderen er van genieten.

Entretenido, lleno de personajes simpáticos. Me ha sorprendido porque es un libro cargado de pequeñas enseñanzas. De niña, habría disfrutado el doble con su lectura. Las ilustraciones son monísimas y originales.

2.5 rounded down. I really enjoyed the Netflix show of Hilda, but this book just didn't hit it for me. It was basically a retelling of the first few episodes of the show, but less enjoyable for me. It was much more pleasing to watch than to read.
