Eight Beloved Books from Each of the Past 10 Years

Posted by Cybil on October 14, 2024

Here at Goodreads World Headquarters, we spend a lot of time sorting books into stacks. It’s fun, if a little hard on the back. The key is to lift with your legs. Anyway, we occasionally stumble upon a particularly interesting sorting technique.

Such is the case with today’s collection, which features a sampling of the most beloved books from the past decade, arranged by publication year. We say “sampling” because it’s not a straight listing of the year’s most popular books. Instead, it’s a representative collection of the books that your fellow readers are currently reading (or perhaps rereading) and recommending.

As such, this collection folds in sleepers and slow-burn hits—titles that didn’t necessarily blow up on initial publication but have since gained traction through BookTok, word of mouth, back-catalog explorations, etc. What they all have in common is that they are clearly beloved by readers.

Station Eleven is a good example. A literary sci-fi novel set in a post-pandemic Midwest, the book was plenty popular when it first came out in 2014. But it has remained popular for a full decade now. The excellent HBO series adaptation is part of the story, surely, but this continuing interest suggests that author Emily St. John Mandel’s novel speaks to readers in an enduring way.

Other books in this stack might include Taylor Jenkins Reid’s historical Hollywood novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo or Victoria Schwab’s perennially popular contemporary fantasy The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

Scroll down to browse the collection by calendar year, and if you want to dig deeper, click on the headline for each section (“Books Published in 2022”) to read the full list. If any individual book catches your eye, click the Want to Read button to add the title to your wish-list shelf.

Irene I’ve reading 20, 7 on my tbr and 1 I’m currently reading.

message 102: by Stacey (new)

Stacey It would be amazing to be able to export these lists or download as a .pdf. During my in person book club it's difficult to "share" these lists with digitally challenged members.

message 103: by CR (new)

CR Williams There's maybe a dozen titles on this HUGE list that are of the fantasy genre...

Chinnu wrote: "I read two books from this list which is because I don't like fantasy and most of the books here are based on fantasy."

message 104: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Vossen I've read 25 of these and 3 are on my want to read shelf. I was aware of all of these as they came out and I think I've gotten to or marked everything I'm actually interested in. I've very averse to historical fiction so that knocks a lot of these titles out of the running for me.

message 105: by Cherie (new)

Cherie Hanechak Law wrote: "I've read 13 books on this list. Some were good, others weren't. Can you recommend me a book to read on this list that I haven't read yet?"

I thought Remarkably Bright Creatures was very good and one that would appeal to a wide variety of readers. As a fantasy fan, A Darker Shade of Magic absolutely captivated me with its immersive worldbuilding.

message 106: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Reads I've read 19, 11 are on my TBR list, and 2 DNFs

message 107: by Catbytheseareads (new)

Catbytheseareads ♡ I've read 9 of them. I also want to read or have 9 of them on my TBR's.

message 108: by James (last edited Nov 07, 2024 11:34PM) (new)

James 1 read, 1 want to read, 1 added to want to read. Can I filter out the garbage fiction?

message 109: by Vaso (new)

Vaso I have read 53 and currently reading another 1.

And i have at least 4 on my TBR list.

message 110: by Lux (new)

Lux I've read 30 of these books !

message 111: by Ucho (new)

Ucho Several dnfs, 2 'serious' tbrs (A Gentleman in Moscow and Lessons in Chemistry) and a handful I'm not opposed to trying if I ever happen on them. Nothing finished so far.

message 112: by Bookwormbadger (new)

Bookwormbadger I've read 35. Favourites - Nightingale, Lessons in Chemistry, Hamnet, The Alice Network, A Little Life, Tattooist of Auschwitz.

message 113: by Ashley (new)

Ashley I've only read one from this list. I tend to not enjoy 'popular' works.

message 114: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn Krueger I think I’ve read like 5 on this list, I would love to read more if life wasn’t so busy and chaotic. My sibling is currently reading “The Silent Patient” and is loving it, of course, I get all the gossip and spoilers for it. But is highly recommended and anybody who is on the verge of deciding if you should read a book or not, read a couple chapters, and if you don’t like it, then you don't like it. But at least you can say that you have tried.

message 115: by Barb (new)

Barb I've read 15 thus far and many are on my to be read list.

message 116: by سارة (new)

سارة I've read three.

message 121: by Jules (new)

Jules I've read 41 of these

message 123: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hitchcock I've read 21 of them.

message 124: by Nicole (last edited Nov 08, 2024 01:14PM) (new)

Nicole Having read 61, I don’t think it’s a great list. A lot of those books were 2 stars read for me. Also, no Brandon Sanderson book? At least, there’s only one SJM novel. My favorites & most memorable from this list for those interested:
Red rising
Daisy Jones & the six
Station Eleven
Yellow
The Nightingale
I’m glad my mom died
Pachinko
Eleanor Oliphant (listen to the audiobook, it’s a delight)
Homegoing
The Fifth Season
Big Little Lies

message 125: by Marie (last edited Nov 08, 2024 03:41PM) (new)

Marie Total books read: 4. Of the 4, three were book club choices. Only one I chose on my own. Of the rest, only one is on my "to read" list. I am a total outlier. (in the past ten years I have read hundreds and hundreds of books!)

message 126: by Darshna (new)

Darshna Rekha I have read 17 books 📚 Long way to go 😅
Thank you for the list, the best books are the ones that pass the test of time rather than the hype for a while.

Georgia Read 2 and have 18 on my TBR list and one I just got in paperback that I will be reading next!
