The recurring misfit-hood of Harrogate is amusing; the continual plainness of Sut is a good rock for it.

I suppose I can say the slice of life stuff is getting more enjoyable. Between Suttree and Harrogate, both have their pros and cons.

I'm enjoying it overall more than I was last week though, which I suppose is the notable thing.

This book is seriously very good. For this to get as much ire as it does...let's just say I'm surprised. Especially the chapter that people seem to make this book all about. I didn't even realize I was neck deep into the shopping until I was over halfway through! If that's the worst this book has to offer, then it'll finish off at an easy 5 stars.

First 2 chapters were really great. POV choices and set-up of stuff is good, and the framing/timing of where this book starts was both unexpected and makes perfect sense at the same time.

Looking forward to more.

Finished up Part 1. This book is seriously so good; definitely shaping up to be a favorite. It is expertly crafted, and I can scarcely come up with any real flaws.

The very minor issues I’ve had have been few and far between and unmemorable to the point that I couldn’t tell you what they were. Or, in the case of dialogue, it has come around to hook me instead.

Genuinely loving this.

Again, some character events are entertaining, but there's no real plot going on and I'm not entirely connecting to anything yet.

Only read 1 chapter last night when I was hoping to basically finish Part One (meaning I still have 5 chapters left in the part; yikes), but that 1 chapter did continue the trend of every bit of information being doled in just the right ways at just the right times. I can't describe how perfect this balance is so far.

This book is genuinely fantastic so far. It’s still early, but it is definitely one of the more impressive debuts I’ve read. Prose is well-intentioned; details are trickles out expertly; POV’s are very immersive; and the worldbuilding and history - and thus how it is utilized - is some of the best I’ve encountered.

Far more pages than typical McCarthy. Quite a few more words per page too. This is gonna be a long one...but I'm interested. Not sure I'm "engaged" yet, but I'm interested.

That said, it was a lot easier to be "motivated" to read it since the audiobook chapter splits actually occur at all of the section breaks in the physical copy for once XD

Makes it easier to actually know where the stopping spots are lol

Why the hell is this book so goddamn compelling?

I just can't stop listening, despite thinking it would last me through the work-week. But I can't stop. It's "The Passenger" all over again in that regard.

So many more little hints, plus context to make the map make sense. Pieces settings and tiny little portions of the world building together has been super engaging thus far.

First 2 chapters went quite well. The degree to which McCarthy respects the subject matter and the conversation itself (or rather, the conversations themselves), and the way it all flows it really great so far.

Nothing like The Passenger, of course, but it is working in much the same way - due in so small part to the related subjects and references between the books that expand each other.

Very promising start. Finding myself digging into things a lot more deeply than I typically do, so that’s - to be redundant - promising. Looking forward to continuing, tho I (unfortunately) won’t have time to binge it.

The pacing in this entry is surprisingly great to be honest. Also, despite the POV choices seeming odd from an outside perspective...it also makes pretty much perfect sense too.

Reading didn't really happen the last couple of nights because of sheer exhaustion, but I think I've made up for it so far today. I think this one might just be my favorite of the bunch...which I'm still very shocked by.

Some interesting developments, some inflaming material on the IRS that makes me hate it even more somehow, some good humor and continued great dialogue. I think I'm very likely to finish tomorrow somehow.

Not gonna lie, I wasn't exactly expecting a decent chunk of this chapter to just be dialogue and discourse about quantum physics XD

I'm...surprised to find that this one is largely...the best(?) so far? I think? Maybe?

That's kind of a surprise.

Riordan just really hits the spot sometimes, what can I say?

Next couple chapters down. A couple segments I haven't loved as much, but the rest have been just as good. Still very, VERY good. 1/3 of the way through, and still on track to be Top 3 McCarthy without much issue. :D

Next 4 chapters are all quite lengthy...we'll see how quickly I get through this after today.

First couple chapters done, and I haven't been this invested this early in anything McCarthy since No Country For Old Men. Characters are interesting (even where one could easily be awful), the premise is surprising me in my interest since I didn't think much of it at first, and the dialogue especially is ON POINT.

Hopefully it keeps this momentum.

Finished Chapter 26. Only 2 chapters left, even though they make more than a third of the book (or somewhere thereabouts). These last couple chapters didn't have near as much great/super memorable stuff, unfortunately. Hopefully these last couple chapters do!
