Catherine, a chunky read is a book over 500 pages. Although, truthfully, I'll sometimes give myself credit for a book if it's 490-ish pages because I figure it balances out the 1100-1400 page books I read.

In some group challenges a chunkster is >450 pages. Whatever you set is fine; it helps to define it. Some people indicated if the book is <200 pages or even Juvenile. Some people indicate audios and re-reads. You can pretty much do what you want. I'm going to have to think of a name for >1,000 pages, b/c I'm in the middle of one and it is taking forever.

I agree, there's no "official" definition of a chunky book. I don't know why I chose 500 pages. I think it's my OCD because if you choose 500, then the next natural level is 750, then the next level after that is 1000. Nice, even, perfect. But, I probably should make a superchunky level for books over 1250 pages. Although I only read about 1 of those a year- if that. There are not that many of them.

I agree, because this is a good way for me to remember too ~ seems I choose a lot of "big" books and thus my yearly output is "way down".

That's why I keep a page count for the year too. It seems to be pretty consistent- no matter how many big or small books I read. Except for when I read more non-fiction. Non-fiction seems to lower my yearly page count.

That's also why I do the stars for the chunky books- 1 star for a 500+ page book, 2 for a 750+ page book, 3 for a 1000+ page book. I really should just add a 4 star for a 1250+ page book. A 500-749 page books is clearly equivalent to 2 regular books- so the star equals the extra book. So, the star is about how much "extra" books that chunky is equal to. So I can go through the list and count up stars and know that by adding that to the number of books actually read is, like, the book total adjusted for chunky reads.

That's the way it is for me too, Sharon. I read a lot of bigger books and nonfiction, both of which slow me down a lot.
