Jackie Ivie was born and raised in a suburb outside Utah's capital, beautiful Salt Lake City. The second in a family of four daughters and one son, Jackie was constantly amusing her siblings with her invented games, escapades, and stories. And she was always reading. She would even walk the family dog, with one hand holding the leash, while the other held the ever-present book. No subject went unread, but once she discovered Historical Romances, there was no doubting her favorite genre.

Jackie has always been the busy type, rarely sitting still without being occupied in at least one activity, and usually more. When she was younger, it was nothing to find her watching television, while doing her homework, listening to music, crocheting like a madwoman, and reading, all at the same time.

After graduating, Jackie gained secure employment with a large service company and relocated with her growing family to the neighboring, sparsely-populated state of Wyoming. She then spent several years enjoying the wildlife, scenery, and open space that Wyoming is known for. In addition to writing, Jackie is an accomplished artist in several mediums, preferring mixed media. She has several pictures in print and has exhibited in art showings throughout the West. There was never anything she loved doing more than reading, however, and once she discovered the thrill involved with putting her own words and fantasies on paper there was no stopping her.

In 2001, Jackie and her family took a huge step and moved to the largest state of the nation; Alaska. Although it was her job that brought her here, Jackie has grown to love this land of amazing contrasts, breathtaking vistas, and the ever-present resident, the Alaskan moose. There's nothing else like it, and the very long days of summer lend themselves to hours and hours of energizing tasks, while the long winter nights are just right for her real love...writing.

Jackie has now written thirteen novels and is continually starting more. The thrill of writing has now been enhanced by seeing her actual story in print. Lady of the Knight is her first published work. It will be followed by Tender is the Knight scheduled for release this summer.

Aaargh! So much potential in this story -- dashed because of the abrasive and unlikable heroine and her ridiculous dialogue.

Even after Jolie Pritchard, a medieval studies major, learned that the gorgeous, kilt-wearing duke wooing her was a 400+ year old vampire, she continued to use all manner of modern-speak idioms that were incomprehensible to him. On the rare occasions that she explained them, it was in a rushed, snide manner that has the reader envisioning a tossed head and rolling eyes. Besides being obnoxious, this is inconsistent with someone having so much appreciation for his culture that she traveled overseas to pursue her medieval studies education.

No doubt this was intended to be snarky humor, but it really missed the mark, instead coming across as insensitive rudeness. This continues throughout the story and ruined it IMHO.

Knight after Night get two stars (instead of one) because Jackie Ivie did some interesting world building, and our antihero, Thoran Alexander MacKettryck, is swoon worthy in both manner and appearance.

Short, aaannnddd. .... Well it was short. And my biggest grumble, if your gonna do a Scot character and are not A native Scot, read The Broons or Oor Wullie!

Me hizo reír mucho. No tiene ni pies ni cabeza pero la historia es para entretener, no para profundizar en ella.

3*** porque la disfruté y cumplió su cometido

I bought the first four as a bundle, so I am going to review them individually before I do the entire bundle. Keep in mind these are novellas so the story doesn’t quite get the chance to develop to its fullest. This is my first book in this series, but I get the impression that these books are setting the stage for the rest of the books (but I could be wrong).

Jolie is studying. She got a scholarship to study in Scotland and she plans to make good on that scholarship. She hears a voice, disturbingly, right by her ear. But she sees no one. When she hears the voice again, she looks up and finds what appears to be a Scottish highlander sitting across from her. The highlander’s name is Thoran and he has been looking for Jolie for centuries. He is not about to let her brush him off, which is what she attempts to do repeatedly. He needs to convince her to go with him and keep her safe from the hunter’s at the same time.

There wasn’t quite enough detail for me. It alternated POV between Jolie and Thoran. When we were with Jolie, we got quite a bit of understanding about how she felt about herself, Thoran and the situation. However, when we were with Thoran we didn’t quite get the depth of emotion from him that would make the extent of need for Jolie believable.

There wasn’t quite a climax in this book. It almost got there, but then just kind of tapered off before anything really happened. And Jolie seemed to be refusing the entire time, and then suddenly changes her mind. It was an awkward ending.

This was an entertaining read. The beginning really caught me, the library scene where/when the main characters meet was fun, lighthearted, and I must say, I quickly fell for Thoran.

Thoran is a sexy, extremely wealthy vampire and an assassin, who did not expect to find his mate - well, at least he had never envisioned a woman like Jolie would be meant for him. Their conversations were amusing since Thoran has remained on the sidelines of society, knowing very little about modern slang and even clothing. They were a wonderful couple.

However, I felt the story was too short and that it was a bit choppy in the beginning. Also, due to the length, the world building left much to be desired.

I purchased the ebook set of the Vampire Assassin League series. I LOVE vampires and I can't wait to get started on the next book, which is at the top of my To Read pile.

If you are looking for a new take on vampires, you should give this book a try.

Definitely a wonderful start to the series, love the Assassin twist I mean you think of vampires generally as blood sucking fiends now it is getting paid for yet you still cheer on the "bad boy" made me laugh, cry, and almost chuck my kindle. All in all I am loving it. I started late in the series as you can tell but I found it very easy to begin in the correct reading order with the lovely series set that has 8 different volumes. This particular book is in one with a set of 4 I am on the last of that and about to move on the volume 2 each has about 4 of the books in the series in the correct reading order if bought in proper sequence ;) Enjoy!

It was okay. I had some issues with the writing style and some grammar and punctuation usage that made me the story feel a bit fractured at times. I thought the story concept was a good idea but just now executed as well as I would have liked. But who am I to complain as it was a free book. I have two more books in the series that I intend to read. Although I don't particularly like the author's writing style I'm not put off enough to not want to read the other two books in the series, especially since the books are free and novellas.

I found the story good, but some smaller parts are a bit boring to me. I would not mind to read more.

This was an awful start to a new series. It provided no background into the Vampire Assassin League. And this story in particular was horrible - what does a centuries old vampire have in common with a teenager? And Jolie is a whiny idiotic child who has no depth at all. Thoran and Jolie barely speak then surprise - they're in love. I was barely able to finish the short story; not worth reading even if you get the book for free.

THE VAMPIRE

Highland Vampire Thoran MacKettryck's lonely. Bitter. Vengeful. For centuries now, he's taken lives for profit and drained blood for free. Just like always. But then he's gifted what every immortal craves: his mate. He just can't believe his eyes when he finally hunts her down.

HIS MATE

Jolie Pritchard's young. Studious. Driven. Studying Medieval Literature is her life and this scholarship - her dream. She's the last thing an arrogant, gorgeous, world-class playboy should be pursuing and she knows it. If only he wasn't the most thrilling male she's ever imagined...

THE CURSE

She was warned. She didn't listen.

Knight After Night is a 20,000 word paranormal romance novella.

*EXCERPT

* * *

"You want this?" He lifted an eyebrow.

"Not especially."

"Good."

He pitched it into the center of the river without any effort. They both watched it hit water and immediately sink. The muscles displayed in his arm had moved. Flexing. Rippling. The guy was built. Masculine. And he was gorgeous. And he was worried about performing for her. Jolie sighed. She'd known it was too good to be true. But it had sure been a fun fantasy.

"What is it?" he asked.

"You. And your...uh...impotence. I'm sorry. Truly."

"What impotence?"
"I should've known, really. It was right in front of my face. No wonder you're here. Right now. With me."

"What...does that mean?"

Thoran had his hair pulled back, but a lock had escaped the bond. Jolie noted how it caressed his brow and moved with every blink of his eyelashes as he looked down at her. He'd moved again, turning toward her, as if to envelope and encompass her completely. With the confused look reflected in those silver eyes, it was impossible not to feel a swoon coming on. She knew exactly what it felt like. And to disguise all of that, she opened her mouth and started talking.

"There's no reason to get all uptight and upset. I'm sure it happens to every guy. If they've used it too much. Or taken the wrong kinds of drugs for too long. Or had a bad experience with the wrong party. I read the tabloids. Get bombarded with the television ads. It's not that uncommon. Even in a guy as young as you."

"What are you speaking of now?"

"You're unable to...get it up. And now you're mad," she whispered.

"Get what up?"

"That's it. I'm done. I can believe you're a world class playboy who's lost his ability. I can definitely believe you'd attempt to get it back by pursuing and then charming the hell out of a little nobody from the end of nowhere. But I can't believe I actually thought for one moment you were a vampire. I can't. I must've inhaled something from the fumes in that basement. That's the only explanation."

He wasn't just closer. He was overpowering, looming over her and making certain of his domination with an arm about her back.  He pulled her close. Right atop his lap, while his eyes narrowed to slits of mirrored silver.

"It's ok, Thoran. Really. I won't tell anyone. I promise. You don't have to worry."

"Tell anyone what? That I'm a vampire?" He hissed the words.

"Who would believe that?"*

Man, what a waste! Ivie can write. There's witty dialogue. There's a cute, kind of clueless alpha male who begs. (I love me some begging man.) There's smart female lead. There's vampires. Really, this should have been a slam dunk for me. But no. No. No. No. NO. NO!

It's not even half as long as it needs to be to allow for a believable plot. So it's incredibly rushed and almost every aspect of it is underdeveloped. Thornan is apparently some sort of vampire assassin (the series is even called Vampire Assassin League) but that's not addressed anywhere in the book.

Jolie is unnecessarily rude to Thornan from the moment they meet. Really, people usually present a little social grace when confronted with new people before turning mean. He bullies her into a date by threatening violence against anyone she tries to call for help and ignores all her attempts at agency. Then, despite the author trying to show Jolie angry at the idea of being materialistic, a full on third of the book seems to be dedicated to describing his wealth and Jolie's response to it.

There is slut shaming and the requisite naive virgin whining about how his big penis will tear her. WTF? Jolie just accepts everything with ease by deciding not to think about it (what happened to the smart girl in the beginning) and seems to have some sort of personality transplant about halfway through the book. Then they declare ever-lasting love after one night together.

I am so disappointed!

It was good for being such a short read.

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL !!!

Wow! What a delightfully different and wonderfully entertaining short read! This was my first time reading Jackie Ivie and I'm sure it won't be my last. The story was imaginative, entertaining, compelling and romantic. The dialog was smart, well written and witty. The characters were fascinating and intriguing. Scottish vampire Thoran Alexander MacKettryck is an assassin and after four hundred years has all but given up hope of ever finding his mate until suddenly, he feels her call. But what in the name of the saints can he do when he discovers that she a very young and very inexperienced student from a place called Alaska. He can barely understand anything the lively lovely lass says so how can he convince her to be his for an eternity! But when he sees the lovely Jolie, he knows that he must convince her to be his!

Hmm this one just didn't do it for me. I thought it was kind of weird how excepting Jolie was of the whole Vampire thing. Something seemed to be missing. I can't put my finger on it. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but after it was all done, I thought back and felt like it needed something more. It was kind of weird how Thoran just expected Jolie to be with him and be a vampire after one night together, and after only knowing each other for less than a week. AND Jolie seemed a little immature.

I did have a quote I marked. I thought it was funny.

"My step-brothers would kill for those muscles."

"They would?" There were a couple of odd bits of information in that brief sentence. She had brothers. And they were killers.

This was an okay story. I'm not sure there was one reason that kept me from rating it higher. I think it was an amalgamation of several reasons. First, Jolie was immature and ditzy. Yes, she was a college student but she truly showed her immaturity in her adolescent responses to Thoran. Second, Thoran was a 400 year old vampire who earned his fortune being a paid assassin. Ivie never tells us why and it just didn't jibe well with the rest of the story. It seemed to me that there were a lot of haphazard characteristics and details thrown together. Unfortunately, those details never coalesced into an outstanding story. I didn't love...and I didn't hate it.

I wish I had realized this was a short story when I started, it went by so fast I felt kind of cheated when I finished. There could be so much more for these characters, but instead its just... I don't know how to say it.

There doesn't feel like any romance is in the story. Not sure if this actually is a spoiler, but better to be safe.

I just think these VAL stories would be much better if they were longer and went deeper into the background happenings, like the hunters, who are they and whats that about a feud?

This was a frustrating read, I just didn't get it - the storyline, the characters, the dialogue.
Several times I had to re-read whole sections to try and piece together what the hell these two were talking about. B/w his Scottish brogue and her superiority complex quoting of literature - this was just a mess.
Too many times to count their exchange of dialogue (even given the ancient warrior meets modern woman expected misunderstandings) just didn't make any sense. It was tiresome and frustrating.
And she's a virgin! And he's overly endowed. But they manage to have mind blowing hot sex - just felt too forced.

Vampire... OMG!

The book was disappointing. Jolie was completely wishy-washy. Thoran was an a$$. . I also don't understand the assassin thing I picked this up as part of the set of the first four books, but I don't know if I will bother with the rest.

I wasn't sure how I would rate this book. Let me first say that this was a free read and it was good I did have a problem with Thoran being stuck in another century. Jolie was a young naïve college student from Alaska studying in Scotland who would rather bury her head than ask questions that I think needed to be asked. Thoran was a vampire who was over four hundred years old who is also an assassin. This was my first time reading this author and this was a good being for a new series for me. I wish that the author would have given more background information.

This is a nice start to an amazing series! Thoran Alexander MacKettryck our first Assassin in the series. He is completely old world and just makes me want to swoon. So he's a vampire assassin we all have our faults right? Jolie meets him and he changes her life forever! I love paranormal romance and love historical romance. Even though this takes place in present day I still get the two genres I love the most!! I can't wait to read the next one. I can tell already I am going to be totally obsessed with this series.

The scholar and the Assassin

All Jolie wanted to do was study and no time for romance. Thoran won't take no for an answer. He found his mate and he has to tell her somethings that might send her running back to Alaska. Things like she is his mate and they'll be together forever. That he has hunters out there trying to kill him and one other thing. He's a vampire. If she can just get over this they will have a storybook ending. If not, then they both be condemned to be miserable for the rest of their lives.

This book and series are on my reread list and I've really enjoyed reading it again. An assassin for hire, Thoran Alexander MacKettryk the fifth, or the seventh, or whatever, has waited more than four hundred years for his mate. He senses her the instant she sets foot on Scottish soil. Jolie is an American student from Alaska studying in Scotland on a scholarship. She thinks vampires are a myth and that Thoran is a pushy, arrogant, but oh so handsome, eccentric rich guy. She's both right, and wrong, as she will soon learn.
